How to Book Your Discounted Award Flight!

Here’s how to get the discount:

  • Be a primary cardholder for any of the American Airlines cards above
  • Search for low-level awards by logging into your American Airlines account
  • Call American Airlines at 800-882-8880 to book your flight by March 31, 2016, and travel by May 31, 2016.  You will NOT get the discount if you book online.

You’ll Need to Call American Airlines to Book Your Flight

There are no fees to book over the phone because these awards cannot be booked online.  But you’ll still pay an extra $75 for award tickets booked less than 21 days prior to departure.

You can also book at the airport or at a ticket office, but you’ll pay a $35 fee (and $45 for international destinations at a ticket office).

You May Be Able to Get a Better Deal

If you’re booking a short-haul flight (less than 1,150 miles), you can save by using British Airways Avios points.  That’s because you’ll only pay 7,500 British Airways Avios points each way or 15,000 British Airways Avios points round-trip on partners American Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

And remember, even though very short (under 650 miles) partner awards flights in the US have gone up in price, you can still save Avios points on round-trip award flights by using this trick.

Need More British Airways Avios Points?

You can earn the points you need for your flight by signing-up for the Chase British Airways Visa Signature Card and completing the tiered minimum spending requirements to earn a total of 100,000 British Airways Avios points bonus.

Plus, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Starwood points transfer to British Airways at a 1:1 ratio.  And AMEX Membership Rewards transfer at a 5:4 ratio.

Bottom Line

If you’re an American Airlines credit cardholder, you could save up to 7,500 American Airlines miles on low-level American Airlines award tickets to select cities.  This deal is good when you book by March 31, 2016, and travel by May 31, 2016.

Call American Airlines at 800-882-8880 to make your reservation without a fee.  Or book your flight at the airport, but you’ll be charged a $35 fee ($45 for international flights).

Though if your flight is less than 1,150 miles, you’ll save more by using British Airways Avios points to book your American Airlines award flight.

Thank you for this article! I was able to book my mother a trip to visit family in Florida! I was able to take advantage of the 7,500 mile-discount on the round-trip. I have searched the AA site and it was only through your article I was able to get to the correct page! I phoned in with my AAviator MasterCard in hand, and the representative got me into a great flight and waived the fee since there is no way to book this online. All in all, I wouldn’t have gotten this trip without your RSS-Newsletter!
