The Chase Sapphire Preferred is now offering 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points when you complete the minimum spending. This is the largest publicly available sign-up bonus I’ve ever seen for this card!
And you can easily turn this into 55,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points!
I’ll explain how to earn this bonus and tell you about 3 other benefits to adding an authorized user to your account.
What’s the Deal?
The sign-up bonus for the Chase Sapphire Preferred has increased from 40,000 to 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points! You’ll earn the sign-up bonus when you spend $4,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
Other perks include:
- 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent on travel and dining
- 1X Chase Ultimate Rewards point per $1 spent on other purchases
- 5,000 bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points when you add an authorized user who makes a purchase within the 1st 3 months
- Primary car rental insurance – Covers damage or theft to your rental car, when you pay for the rental with your card
- Trip delay reimbursement – Get up to $500 back per ticket when your trip is delayed more than 12 hours
- NO foreign transaction fees
The $95 annual fee is waived for the 1st year. This gives you time to try out the card for ~10 months and decide if it’s worth the fee.
Chase has excellent customer service. So if you decide to cancel, you can send a secure message through your online account or call and you won’t get the hard-sell.
That said, this is a card I happily pay the annual fee on. It’s worth it for the terrific bonus categories, perks, and ability to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to airlines and hotels for Big Travel!
How to Earn an Easy 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points
If you’re a new Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholder, you can earn 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards bonus points by adding an authorized user to your account who makes a purchase (of any amount) within the 1st 90 days.
This is a great way to earn extra points and it doesn’t cost anything to add a user to your account!
But before you do this, make sure it’s someone you trust! That’s because any charges on additional accounts are ultimately your responsibility.
This could ultimately damage your credit score if they max out your credit limit or make charges you can’t afford to pay.
But you can take precautions to ensure you’re covered, such as setting a limit on their available credit. And keeping a close eye on your online account.
Can an Authorized User Earn the Sign-Up Bonus Later?
Before you add an authorized user to your account, consider there’s a possibility they may not be able to earn the sign-up bonus from the Chase Sapphire Preferred on their own.
With Chase’s new rules, folks have recently experienced mixed results with earning the sign-up bonus on Chase Ultimate Rewards cards when they already have an authorized user card.
So if you want to play it safe, you might want to hold off on adding someone who wants to apply for their own Chase Sapphire Preferred card down the road.
3 More Benefits to Adding an Authorized User to Your Card!
5,000 extra Chase Ultimate Rewards points aren’t the only reasons to put a friend or family member on your Chase Sapphire Preferred account.
Reason 5,001: Gives You the Ability to Transfer Points to Friend’s Loyalty Accounts
Chase has made changes to the way you can transfer points. In the past, you could only transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to your spouse or domestic partner’s frequent flyer or hotel rewards account.
But now you can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to anyone’s airline or hotel account, as long as they live in your household AND are an authorized user on your account.
Once you add an authorized user in your household to your account, you can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to their loyalty account with partners including:
|Chase Ultimate Rewards Airline Transfer Partners|
|Aer Lingus||British Airways||Flying Blue (Air France/KLM)|
|Iberia||Korean Air||Singapore Airlines|
|Southwest||United Airlines||Virgin Atlantic|
|Chase Ultimate Rewards Hotel Transfer Partners|
Even if your household member won’t be using the card for purchases, you can add them to allow transfers to their loyalty program accounts.
Note: You CAN still transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to the Chase Ultimate Rewards account of someone in your household without that person being an authorized user.
Reason 5,002: Help Meeting Minimum Spending Requirements
You’ll need to spend $4,000 within 3 months to the earn the 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards point sign-up bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Adding an authorized user to your account can help you knock out that spending quickly.
That’s because any purchases an authorized user makes also count towards the minimum spending requirements.
Reason 5,003: Double Points
Additionally, when your authorized user makes a purchase with their card, you get all the rewards! So when you’re in London and feel like sleeping in, your partner can go shopping without you.
They won’t pay foreign transaction fees for their purchases and you’ll earn 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points when they take a break for fish & chips.
If you have good credit (which you should before getting into this hobby!), you might help your authorized user improve their credit score by adding them to your account. This is especially true with teenagers or college students who don’t have a credit history.
Authorized user cards are also a great teaching tool to help young adults learn how to handle credit responsibly.
When you add an authorized user, the entire history of your account is added to their credit report, which could give their score a big boost.
Chase is giving folks 5,000 reasons to add an authorized user to their new Chase Sapphire Preferred card. But I count 5,003!
Besides the 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points you’ll get when your authorized user makes a purchase within the 1st 3 months of opening your account, you’ll also get:
- The ability to transfer points to their partner airline and hotel loyalty accounts (if the person lives with you)
- Help with meeting minimum spending
- More Chase Ultimate Rewards points when your authorized user makes purchases with their card (such as 2X points on dining)
That’s in addition to the sign-up bonus of 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points you’ll earn after you complete the minimum spending.
Just be sure you fully trust someone before you give them access to your credit by adding them as an authorized user, because there are risks.
I think this is a great deal. Because 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth $50 cash back, ~$63 towards a flight on nearly any airline through the Chase Travel portal, or much more when you transfer to partners like Hyatt, United Airlines, and British Airways!
