I wasn’t too impressed with Roomer, but a $25 credit could be worth it to some folks.

Roomer is a free site that lets you sell your non-refundable, prepaid hotel reservations.

However, if you sell your reservation on Roomer, you will pay a 15% fee (of the reservation fees) and any applicable taxes.

And Roomer holds your money until 10 days after the buyer checks-out.  You can request payment via PayPal, Western Union, or bank transfer.

But you (the seller) have to pay all the fees for PayPal, Western Union and bank transfer.  Buyers do NOT pay any fees.

All reservations on Roomer are non-refundable.   So once you a buy a reservation from Roomer, you can NOT make cancel the reservation or make any changes.

How Do Roomer Rates Compare?

Let’s look to see if it’s worth it to book through Roomer.

Los Angeles

Usually I look at dates far in advance, but I wanted to see if Roomer can get a good deal on a hotel for a date on short notice.

If someone got sick right before their trip, had a family emergency, or had to cancel suddenly because of a work commitment, they might put their room for sale on Roomer, and you could get a good deal.

I looked for a hotel room about ~3 days before a planned stay.  For the Beverly Wilshire – Beverly Hills you’d pay a non-refundable rate of $606 for 1 night.

But if you booked on the Four Seasons website or Kayak, you only pay ~$595 and it’s refundable!

New York for New Year’s Eve

Through Roomer you’d pay a non-refundable rate of $1,250 for the night of December 31, 2014, at the Crowne Plaza Times Square.

New Year’s Eve at the Crowne Plaza in New York for $1,250

On the IHG website or Kayak, you’d pay a non-refundable rate of ~$2,632.  Ouch!

You Pay 2X The Roomer Price of $1,250 Booking Through IHG or Kayak

In this case, Roomer would get more than 50% off IHG’s price!

New York

Because New York is popular with lots of folks, I wanted to see how Roomer prices compared when it wasn’t a high-demand date like New Year’s Eve.

Through Roomer, you’ll pay $184 (non-refundable or cancelable) for the night of January 16, 2015, at the Millennium Hilton.

On Roomer You Pay $184 for 1 Night at the Millennium Hilton in New York

However, if you booked on the Hilton website or Kayak, you’d pay ~$186.  But you can cancel and change your reservation without penalty!

You Pay ~$2 More Through Hilton, But You Can Cancel or Change Your Reservation

Austin

You’d pay a non-refundable and non-cancelable rate of $222 for the night of January 16, 2015, at the Westin Austin at The Domain on Roomer.

But, you’d only pay ~$217 on the Starwood website or Kayak!

You’d Save ~$5 Booking Through Starwood

So in most cases it doesn’t look like you’d save any money booking through Roomer, except for the initial $25 sign-up credit for being referred by someone.  But depending on your plans, Roomer could work out for you.

And according to this thread on Flyertalk, there’s speculation that rooms may be listed by hotels trying to sell unsold rooms.

Reservation Problems With Roomer

Some folks have had difficult experiences with Roomer.  In 1 case, Roomer didn’t transfer the reservation to the person’s name so it took ~20 minutes to check-in at the hotel.

Another person also complained about Roomer not getting their name correct on the reservation causing ~20 minute check-in time.

I’d like to hear about your experiences with Roomer in the comments!

Bottom Line

You can get a $25 credit when you sign-up for Roomer IF you’ve been referred by a member.

Roomer lets you sell your non-refundable, prepaid hotel reservations.

You pay a 15% fee to sell on Roomer along with fees from PayPal, Western Union, or bank transfer plus all applicable taxes to receive your money.  And your money is held until 10 days after the buyer checks out!

With my test searches for buying a room, I only found 1 situation (a high-demand date in a tourist location) where Roomer was a good deal.  But your experience may be different.  It could be worth trying for the $25 credit.

However, some folks on Flyertalk have had annoying experiences using Roomer.

Is the minimum spend only $50 for this deal? (to get $25 off)

One more way to meet minimum credit card spending.(Accidental discovery – # giveforward #lookingforpatonback #genius

Steps:

1) Day 1 Buy an apple store gift card for a small amount ( say $50)

2)Day 2 Buy an expensive apple product – say an IMAC for $1500 . Make sure to include the gift card in the payment.Pay rest with credit card

So gift card (50 ) + 1450 ( On your credit card) = 1500

3) Day 3 : return product – They will give you cash back. Whoopti f’in do.
