Update:   This offer is no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

Until December 17, 2014, the sign-up bonuses on the Barclaycard Wyndham Rewards cards have been increased to up to 45,000 points.

That could be worth up to 8 free nights when used at Wyndham tier 1 hotels, which cost 5,500 points per night.  But keep in mind their highest tier locations cost 50,000 points per night!

There’s a Better Bonus on the Barclaycard Wyndham Rewards Cards Until December 17, 2014

I always like seeing increased sign-up bonuses.  But this deal isn’t for everyone!

That’s because there are other travel cards with much higher bonuses.  However some folks might find this offer useful towards earning the Southwest Companion Pass or for budget hotels while on the road.

But I’d rather get the Barclaycard US Air card 1st before it goes away, and the other Barclaycards before considering the Barclaycard Wyndham card!

What’s the Deal?

There are 2 versions of the Barclaycard Wyndham Rewards cards.   Their no-annual-fee card normally has a sign-up bonus of 12,000 points after your 1st purchase.  And the version with a $69 annual fee normally gets you 30,000 points.

But for a limited time, you’ll get extra points after meeting minimum spending requirements.  These aren’t our links, but Emily and I will always tell you about better offers, even if we don’t earn a commission.

On the no-annual-fee card, you’ll get:

  • 12,000 bonus points after your 1st purchase, plus 8,000 points after you spend $1,000 in the 1st 3 months (20,000 points total)
  • 3 points per $1 you spend at Wyndham hotels
  • 2 points per $1 you spend on everything else
  • NO annual fee

And the premium version of the card includes:

  • 30,000 bonus points after your 1st purchase, plus 15,000 points after you spend $1,000 in the 1st 3 months (45,000 points total)
  • 5,500 points on your account anniversary each year
  • 5 points per $1 you spend at Wyndham hotels
  • 2 points per $1 you spend on everything else
  • $69 annual fee, NOT waived for the 1st year

Note:   These aren’t good cards to use when traveling abroad, because you’ll be charged a 3% foreign transaction fee.

Is It Worth It?

Wyndham Hotels include Wyndham, Wyndham Grand, Wyndham Garden, Tryp, Wingate, Hawthorn Suites, Microtel, Dream, Ramada, Night, Days Inn, Super 8, Baymont Inn and Suites, Howard Johnson, Travelodge, and Knights Inn hotels.

This deal might appeal to folks who travel frequently to smaller cities and towns where you might not find big-name hotel chains like Hyatt or Marriott.  If you’ve taken a lot of road trips, you’ve probably stayed in a Wyndham hotel!

Road Warriors Are Familiar With Wyndham Brands, Like Travelodge

Many Wyndham chains are geared to folks traveling on a budget, but they have more upscale hotels, too.

You Can Use Wyndham Points at the Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek

You’ll get the most nights out of the sign-up bonus by using points for stays at lower tier Wyndham hotels.  But there aren’t many hotels at their very lowest tier (5,500 points per night).

Note:  Sometimes budget hotels aren’t in the best neighborhoods.  Other times, they are perfectly safe and comfortable.  So be sure to look over reviews on sites like TripAdvisor before you go.

This Knights Inn in Niagara Falls, Canada, Costs 5,500 Points per Night, but Perhaps Not the Honeymoon Suite! 😉

You’d get up to 8 nights at a tier 1 hotel, but remember these locations are typically very cheaply priced.  For this Niagara Falls hotel, for example, you’d pay ~39 Canadian dollars (~$34) including tax.

But Does It Come With a Heart-Shaped Tub?

So the 45,000 point sign-up bonus, in this case, would be worth ~$272 (8 nights X ~$34 per night).

A Better Use of Wyndham Points?

If you’re trying to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, you can transfer Wyndham points to Southwest.  This could be a good way to earn the last few points you need for the Companion Pass.

With the Southwest Companion Pass, your companion flies with you for almost free on paid and award tickets.

Two Can Fly for the Price of 1 With the Southwest Companion Pass

By signing-up for 2 Southwest credit cards with a 50,000 point bonus, you’ll get 104,000 points (after meeting minimum spending requirements).  But you’re still 6,000 points short of the 110,000 Southwest points required to earn the Companion Pass.

Even though the transfer ratio is not as good as it was in the past, you’ll get 6,000 Southwest points when you transfer 30,000 Wyndham points.  So this might be a good strategy for some folks!

Or you could spend an additional $6,000 on a Southwest card to make up the same number of points.

A More Important Consideration

Folks should carefully consider whether this is the right Barclaycard card for them.  That’s because Barclaycard has become strict about approving applications, and now generally only let you get 1 or 2 cards per year.

Wyndham Hotels Are Almost Everywhere, So Some Folks Might Find This Card Useful

That said, there are better sign-up bonuses on other Barclaycards.

For example, you’ll get 40,000 miles after you spend $3,000 in the 1st 3 months with the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard.  That’s worth $400 when redeemed for travel.

And the Barclaycard US Airways card (which is going away soon!) gets you 40,000 miles plus 10,000 miles on your card anniversary each year, after your 1st purchase and payment of the $89 annual fee.  That’s enough for a low-level, round-trip coach class ticket to Hawaii!

There Are Better Barclaycards That Will Get You to Hawaii With the Sign-Up Bonus

So it really depends on your travel style and if you’ve already had a lot of Barclaycards!

Bottom Line

You’ll get an increased sign-up bonus on the Barclaycard Wyndham Rewards cards until December 17, 2014.  These aren’t my links, but they’re better than the usual offer!

Depending on the card, you’ll get as many as 45,000 points, which is enough for 8 free nights at Wyndham’s lowest tier hotels.

If you stay at Wyndham hotels frequently, or already have a lot of Barclaycards, it might be worth applying.  Or if you need a few extra points for the Southwest Companion Pass!

Otherwise, it’s better to save your Barclaycard applications for cards with more valuable sign-up bonuses, like the Barclaycard Arrival Plus or Barclaycard US Airways cards.

As always, do what makes the most sense for your travel goals!

Other than having as just a backup points system for US road trips, I did lots of searching on their charts and hotel locations and still couldn’t really find value, especially for paying the annual fee too…

Best I could find was that 48k points would get you 3 nights at all-inclusive in the Bahamas. Most other good places it’s like 1 night, and not free b/c you gotta pay the annual fee. Nice of Barclays to up it but these programs need to put out like 100k offers to come close to competing with cards from the big wigs like Hilton, SPG, Hyatt, Marriott, etc…
