You get 1 free night at a Category 1 to 4 Marriot hotel upon approval, and 1 free night each year on your card anniversary at a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel. Some expensive cities, like Miami and San Diego have several Category 1 to 4 Marriott hotels.
But they may not be in the heart of the city. And they are usually the mid-tier hotels…but they are free!
You could use your free card anniversary night at the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel which is a 10 minute walk to the Long Beach Shoreline Marina.
Should You Get the Marriott Rewards Premier Card?
You get 15 nights credit towards Marriott elite status after approval and each card anniversary. This only gives you Marriott Silver elite status which doesn’t give you much except for late check-out and a 20% bonus on Marriott points for paid stays.
However, for folks who stay at Marriott hotels a lot, this could be worth it because it would get you closer to Marriott Gold elite status (free lounge access, breakfast, internet, and room upgrades).
And you get unlimited, 1 night elite status credits for every $3,000 you spend on the card.
Note: It can take 6 to 8 weeks for the elite credit to be credited to your account.
With 70,000 Marriott points you can stay 1 night at the Ritz-Carlton, New York Central Park. The Ritz-Carlton is part of Marriott hotels.
Marriott Card vs Marriott Rewards Premier Card?

If you want a lower annual fee of $45 (waived the 1st year), you could get the Chase Marriott Rewards personal card that gives you 30,000 points after spending $1,000 within 3 months. You get a lower sign-up bonus, less Marriott points per dollar earned, and you do NOT get the free night in a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel each card anniversary.
The $40 savings ($85 Marriott Rewards Premier card annual fee – $45 Marriott card annual fee) in annual fee costs is far less than what you’d save for 1 night in a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel!
So I would apply for the Marriott Rewards Premier personal card over the Marriott Card for the higher bonus, more Marriott points on spending, and the annual free night in a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel.
If you stay at Marriott hotels only occasionally, there might be another hotel card that is right for you and your travel goals.
You can get 70,000 Marriott points and 1 free in a Category 1 to 4 Marriott hotel after approval and 1 free night in a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel on your card anniversary each year with the Marriott Rewards Premier card after completing the minimum spending.
The Marriott Rewards Premier card would be good for folks who stay at a lot of Marriott hotels where the 15 elite night credits will help them reach Marriott Gold elite status or Marriott Platinum elite status. Even if you don’t have a lot of Marriott stays, it could be worth it to get a free night at the Ritz-Carlton, New York Central Park or for more nights at other hotels.
