We are two seniors who want to fly business class from LAX to Sydney (SYD) sometime around March. We are flexible on times and dates. We do not mind stopping somewhere enroute, so airlines such as Hawaiian, Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand etc. would work. We currently have 249,000 AMEX points we would like to use if possible. We also want to travel internally within Australia. (Sydney to Melbourne, Melbourne to Cairns, Cairns to Sydney, before returning to the USA). The internal Australian flights can be economy.

Hi Margo, that largely depends on where you are flying to and what the connecting airports are. If you are coming from or flying into a smaller airport for example you might have longer layover times especially if it is not a frequently served hub by the particular airline. If you are strictly looking for AA or US Airways operated flights you have a much smaller choice of flights. It is best to look for all partner award space.

If you have US Airways miles you can use the United website to look for space on all partners. If you have AA miles you can find some partner space on their website. Iberia, Cathay, Qatar, Malaysia among others are not searchable on the AA website but can be found on the BA website.

Hope this helps.

When I try to find award flights on AA or US airways, most of the international flights I find are very long, with lengthy layovers. This isn't the case with United. What am I doing wrong?
