1. 50,000 Mile Lufthansa Card Ends June 30, 2013
I received an email from Lufthansa that the Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCard 50,000 Mile offer will end on June 30, 2013.
I’ve written about 18 ways to use Lufthansa miles and my favorite ways are to either use 12,000 Lufthansa miles for a domestic flight on United or US Air within the US or to use 52,000 Lufthansa miles for a 1-way award in Business Class from Europe to the US.
There is another offer for 50,000 miles, with a lower minimum spending requirement, but you may get fewer miles if you’re approved for a lower card with that offer.
I’ll wrap-up my Lufthansa series by next week, but here’s more than what you want to know about using Lufthansa miles!

- Part 2 – Introduction, Rules, Fees, Mile Expiration etc.

To be clear – I wouldn’t apply for the Lufthansa card if I were new to miles and points.
If you’re new to miles and points, like my mother-in-law, there are better cards for you to apply for like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, American Express Starwood card, Chase Ink Plus, or the other cards on the Hot Deals tab. But if you’ve been doing this for a while, the Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCard could make sense for you – especially if you can use their miles for travel within the US and save your more valuable miles.
But make sure you know the quirks of the program BEFORE you apply. And read The 5 Dangers of Applying for Credit Cards as well!
2. Fairmont Card
Rom’s Deals writes about the Fairmont card which waives the $95 annual fee for the 1st year.
The card has no foreign transaction fees, and gets you Fairmont Premier status (room and suite upgrades on paid stays) in addition to two free nights for 2 (includes breakfast). You also get 1 free night after spending $12,000 within one calendar year.
However, there aren’t that many Fairmont hotels and some hotels don’t have very good award availability.
3. United Business Card
I got a targeted 50,000 mile offer on the United MileagePlus Explorer Business card after spending $2,000 within 3 months.
I logged into my United.com account and clicked on the banner advertisement for the United MileagePlus Explorer personal card and then clicked the link at the top right which said “Are You a Business Card Owner?”
There is more information in this FlyerTalk thread. It seems that not everyone gets to see the targeted offer.
The United Business card gets you 1 free bag on United flights, priority boarding, and has no foreign transaction fees.
But unlike the personal version of the United card, you earn 2 points per $1 for dining, gas, and shopping at Office Supply stores with the United business card. Remember that Office Supply stores sell gift cards to Amazon, Southwest, and also Visa and MasterCard gift cards.
You also get 10,000 extra United miles after spending $25,000 within 1 calendar year.
PS: I’m in full day meetings this week and won’t be able to get to the comments or email soon!
