Via Plane ‘n Simple, Free Marriott Silver Status valid up to February 2013 for folks who have a “residential / business postal address” (my interpretation is that the requirement is a postal address, not residency) in any of these countries:
- Hong Kong
- South Korea
This promotion is valid for those with a residential / business postal address in Australia, China, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia,
Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
I read the terms as suggesting that you only need a residential or business mailing address to take part in this promotion. It doesn’t say that you have to stay at the address in those countries. But I’m not a lawyer, so please do your own research as well.
Marriott Silver doesn’t get you much (20% point bonus, late checkout, and free internet in Asia-Pacific hotels), but it may be useful to status match to other hotels.
I don’t have any upcoming stays with Marriott, so I was comfortable changing my address and earning preference to get Silver status.
Step 1 – Change the address in your Marriott Rewards account to an address in the eligible countries. Or if you don’t have a Marriott Rewards account, sign up for one through the promotion.
I used a relative’s address in India, so dig through your connections for a friend or relative in those countries. You could even use your employer’s country office. Or a hotel which you previously stayed in (preferably not a Marriott). Or your study abroad school or residence.
Google and Google Maps is your friend!
Your membership materials will be mailed to the address on file in 4 to 6 weeks. I am not particularly concerned if someone else gets hold of the membership packet because the card will only have my name and membership number on it. But different folks will have different views on this.
And I can always request a new card later.
Step 2 – Change your Marriott Rewards account to earn miles with either of these airline loyalty programs.
- Air China PhoenixMiles
- China Eastern Airlines Eastern Miles
- China Southern Airlines Sky Pearl Club
- Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
- KingFisher Airlines King Club
- Jet Airways JetPrivilege
If you don’t have an account with any of these airlines, you may want to choose Cathay Pacific since you can use it to check Cathay Pacific award availability.
Step 3 – Sign up for the promotion (if you already have a Marriott account) after changing your address or earning preference.
Step 4 – Wait for the confirmation email which says that Silver Elite status will be applied to your account in 30 days. As easy as that!
This offer may be useful if you don’t have a Marriott account and want to sign up for an account and get free Silver status.
Or if you already have a Marriott account and want to get free Silver status.
