Update – 9:35 am, August 12, 2011: This seems to be applicable only for cards issued in July onwards, though there are stray reports of folks getting the promo code applied for earlier cards.

The additional 50,000 MR points for adding an authorized user is now dead.

I don’t recommend applying for the American Express gold cards in the hope of applying these promo codes.  That’s because the deal could be dead by the time you get the card, but only you can evaluate the potential risk of not getting the bonus for yourself.

Via Mommy Points, you could get up to 50,000 American Express Membership Rewards Points for making 15 transactions on your American Express Gold cards (not confirmed if it works on Platinum cards).

This is quite crazy, because when combined with the 50,000 MR points from adding authorized users to your card, you could end up with 100,000 MR points from the promos alone!

Update: The additional 50,000 MR points for adding authorized users to your card is now dead.

This may be targeted, so the quicker you call the better.

However, I don’t recommend applying for the AMEX Gold card just to get this bonus, since the bonus may not be available when you get the card.

As always, there is a growing FlyerTalk thread on the nitty-gritty, but here’s my takeaway:

1. Call 1-800-297-3276 and ask to apply promo code 6664 to your account. You may have to hang-up and call back again if the customer service representative (CSR) does not apply the promo code to you account.

2.  Valid from July through November 2011. There is speculation that the promo could be only until October which would limit you to earning 40,000 MR points.

3.  Earn 10,000 MR points for making 15 transactions (no minimum amount) per month.

4.  Earning is retroactive, so if you made 15 transactions in July you could get the 10,000 MR points.

5.  A maximum of 50,000 MR points can be earned through this promotion.

Good luck and let’s share our experiences in the comments.

Hmmm......I wonder what the response will be when I point out a THIRTY year account track record, and a definitive "YES" on which I relied in going ahead with card usage

I just got my AMEX Premier Rewards Gold.

Spoke to membership rewards rep who seemed like a bit of a newbie but VERY pleasant. Asked about 6664 for 10K/mo for 15 uses. She said she thought it $15K/mo. I informed that I thought she was incorrect. She put me on hold, came back and said I was correct and she would assign the promo card to my account.

Then she started talking about " all the different codes I have here....". I took the opportunity to ask for 6661 which is 75K points after $1000 spend. She looke dit up and cheerfully said, "OK, I've marked your account for that one as well"

I was rather incredulous and asked her to confirm I was getting both 6661 and 6664. She assured me I was! Sounded TGTBT but hey, that's what she said.

If I am not credited with these, can I rely on the recorded phone call where she definitely said "yes" to both offers?

Million Mile Secrets

@Rick - Unfortunately, AMEX has https://millionmilesecrets.com/2011/09/17/american-express-not-honoring-targetted-bonus-points/" rel="nofollow">not been honoring these bonuses despite having a recorded conversation with the rep saying "yes!"

I too got 40,000 points in my account today. Hope they stay..!!

Million Mile Secrets

@Shweta & @Vitaly - Thanks for sharing. I just posted about it. Looks like AMEX gave folks who shttps://millionmilesecrets.com/2011/09/28/40000-mystery-amex-mr-points/" rel="nofollow">witched promo codes both the bonuses!

If it is an error, they may take the points back!

My wife also has extra 40k points in her MR account. Weird.

Weird thing in my MR account. Maybe you know something about it, -

I originally got 75k for Amex Gold. Spend some of it, and as of yesterday had 49K left in my account. This morning when I logged in, I see that there are 89K points available.

Statement shows:

09/28/2011 Earned PRG $500 spend / 40k MR pts 40,000

I don't recall signing up for anything like it. Is this a know promotion? Error? What are the chances it will not be taken away?

Just thought I'd ask.
