Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

Update: 9:43 am, August 12, 2011: Deal is now dead as the promo is applied only to targeted Argentine customers.

You could get up to 50,000 American Express Membership Reward (MR) points, per American Express charge card, for adding authorized users (10,000 points per user) to your charge cards (Platinum and Premier Gold) with promo code 5721.

There are also reports of this working with business cards as well!  So you could add 5 users to your personal Gold and Platinum cards and another 5 users to your business Gold and Platinum cards for a total of 200,000 Membership Reward points!

This offer may be targeted, so you may need to hang-up and call back to get the promo code applied to your American Express account.

If you have added authorized users to your American Express charge cards, after January 2011, you may be able to call or email American Express and ask them to apply 10,000 MR points to your account with promo code 5721 (per authorized user).

I don’t have these charge cards, so I don’t have any personal success with this, but here’s what I know.

Get 10,000 Membership Reward points for for every authorized user added to your American Express charge cards (limit 5 per card).

There are fees to add authorized users to your American Express cards, which are not waived.

$175 annual fee to add 3 authorized users to your American Express Platinum card (includes airport lounge access) or $45 to add up to 5 authorized users (at the Gold level) to your American Express Platinum card.

No fee for the first 5 authorized users on your American Express Gold card.

1. Call 1-800-297-3276 and ask to apply promo code 5721 to your account. You may have to hang-up and call back again if the customer service representative (CSR) does not apply the promo code to you account.

You could also send a message to American Express asking to add promo code 5721 to your account.

2.  Add an Authorized User to your American Express charge cards. You may be able to do this in the same phone call as in step 1 above, or you may have to hang up and call card services (or get the CSR to transfer you).

Remember that adding an authorized user to your credit card means that your balance on the charge card will also be reported in the authorized user’s credit report.

You may have to provide the date of birth and social security number of the authorized user.  If you don’t want to provide the social security number, you could hang up and call back later to speak with a more agreeable CSR.

Remember, you don’t have to send the authorized user the card (if you’re worried about the authorized user going on a spending spree!).  The card will be mailed to your address.

You could use your children (above 16), parents, siblings, in-laws as authorized users.

3.  Spend at least $1 on the authorized user’s cards. You have to spend at least $1 within 4 months on the authorized user’s charge cards to get the bonus MR points.  The points should post in 6 to 8 weeks.

Bottom Line:

If you have an American Express charge card, then consider adding a few authorized users to your accounts to get a 10,000 extra MR points per user.

If you’ve already added an authorized user since January 2011 to your American Express charge cards, then call or email to ask for 10,000 bonus MR points.

You can get up to 50,000 points for EACH charge card you have with American Express, so consider adding authorized users to personal as well as business charge cards.

Do you know if any of this codes still works?

Million Mile Secrets

@Loloubelle - None of them work now.

When I called about this, I got a really nice agent who said that she knew of a better promo for my Amex Gold Card - code 6661. Code 6661 allows me to add up to 5 additional cardholders to my card. Each additional cardholder that spends $1000 within 92 days of getting the card will net me 75,000 Membership Rewards apiece . The agent also said that when the card is received, I can call in and have this card linked to MY Membership Rewards acct (ie. not the cardholders' MR acct.) Annual Fee is waived for the 1st year for up to 5 additional cardholders.

@Shari - That's great news - thanks for sharing!

i tried for me and my husbands account and it did not work...

Million Mile Secrets

@hs - You may have to hang up and call again to get someone to apply the codes.

Tried secure message and a manager replied that it is for targeted cardholders only. However, he mentions that if authorized users are added, the points maybe automatically added if you're targeted!

I think I'll call today to give it another try. Thanks for the heads up

Million Mile Secrets

@DKAS - You're welcome - it seems that calling is better than messaging for this.

called this morning. added 5 AU on PRG, only asked for name and birthdate then had to wait for approval, then the magic word" you have been approved for 5 AU" YIPEEE!!!!

Million Mile Secrets

@sil - It may work, because AMEX usually requires the (SSN) of the authorized user. However, you may be able to get away with just the date of birth and name, but there have been reports of AMEX calling back for the SSN.

But congratulations on being approved for the 5 AUs and thanks for sharing!
