Update: One or more card offers in this post are no longer available. Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.
If you already have an American Express Starwood Preferred Guest credit card, you may be able to either get a few thousand Starpoints as a “gesture of goodwill” or hit the jackpot and get matched to their current credit card bonus offer.
Or you could get nothing, but you’ll never know unless you ask!
Last year AMEX had a similar promotion on their SPG card and you could get:
1. 5,000 Starpoints added to your account as a gesture of goodwill
2. Matched to the more lucrative current offering
There are no guarantees that you will get ANY points, but you will never know if you don’t ask.
American Express has superb customer service, and you may be able to get additional Starpoints just by asking nicely and emphasizing your longstanding and profitable relationship with American Express.
There are reports on MilePoint of folks getting Starpoints added to their account just by asking.
aussieflyer writes on Milepoint that sending a Secured Message to “Social Media” from your American Express account increases your chances of getting an additional bonus in your account.
And a similar suggestion on FlyerTalk.
If unsuccessful try sending the PM to “social media” instead of general inquiries on the Amex site.
So log on to your American Express account, and use the secure messaging center, and send a message to “Social Media.”
Once you select the “Social Media” option in the secure message center, you have to choose either “Facebook” or “Twitter.”
If you don’t get the response you want, message back 2 or 3 times (or send a message to general inquiries as well), call the customer service line a few times, tweet your message, or post on the American Express Facebook wall.
What To Say?
1. Secure Message.
“I have had my SPG card for many years and have charged thousands of dollars on the credit card. American Express provides the best customer service among all my other credit cards, and I look forward to being a happy American Express customer for many more years.
Recently, I came across an offer for 30,000 Starpoints (include link to offer in your message) which offers 15,000 more SPG points than what I originally received.
However, I really like my American Express SPG credit card, and don’t want to give it up, and would be very grateful if you could apply the terms of the current offer on the SPG credit card to my account.”
If you get declined at first, try again 3 to 4 times.
2. Telephone Call.
Here’s a sample script:
Customer Service Rep: Hi! How are you? And how can I help you today?
You: I’m just great! I’ve had my SPG credit card for 5 years, and I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars on the card. It is a terrific card and I love how easy my banking has become since I switched to American Express.
Customer Service Rep: I’m glad to hear that!
You: However, I noticed that there is a new offer on SPG credit cards which offers 30,000 bonus points versus the 10,000 points I received. I would be very grateful if I could get matched to that offer.
Customer Service Rep (bangs away on keyboard): Unfortunately, I can’t match the terms of the current offer for you.
You: I’ve been a loyal customer for over 5 years. If you can’t match the current offer, is there anything else you can do? (Stop talking, and let the CSR speak.)
Customer Service Rep: Sorry sir, we can’t do anything at this time, but we do appreciate your business.
You: I’m very disappointed to hear that. Chase has been sending me offers of 50,000 bonus points on their Sapphire credit card, but I’ve never seriously considered them.
As a loyal customer of 5 years, I just want to be able to get the same great deal that new customers are getting. Is there anything else you can do?
Customer Service Rep: Okay, I can give you 5,000 SPG points as a gesture of goodwill.
If it doesn’t work, ask to speak to a supervisor or hang up and call back a few times.
Sending 3 to 4 secure messages and calling American Express customer service, may get existing SPG cardholders a few extra Starpoints which will let you have more Big Travel with Small Money.
But there are no guarantees that you’ll get anything, though I’m pretty sure that you’ll get nothing if you don’t ask!
My hunch is also that it is easier to get these additional bonuses, similar to the additional 50,000 point bonus on the Chase Sapphire card, sooner rather than later.
Please be polite and professional when you write messages or call in.
Customer Service Staff have to deal with a lot of nonsense every day, and besides being the right thing to do, you will be more likely to get additional points if you’re friendly and courteous.
