Update: One or more card offers in this post are no longer available. Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

The American Express Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) card is one of the best travel credit-cards for everyday spending. That’s because you get a 25% bonus on every 20,000 Starpoints  transferred to airline partners.

However, the sign-up bonus on this card has been only 10,000 points after the first purchase and another 15,000 points after spending $15,000 within 6 months.

In June last year there was an offer to earn 30,000 Starpoints after spending only $1,000 within 3 months.  But that offer was active for only a few weeks.

I’m hopeful that in the next week or so there will be a new offer for the AMEX SPG card, similar to what was offered last year!

My speculation (yes, this is complete speculation!) is based on:

1) A current targeted offer for a AMEX SPG card which offers 10,000 points after the first purchase and another 20,000 points after spending $4,500 within 3 months.  Targeted offers are sometimes precursors to similar offers being available more broadly, so I’m hoping that this happen.

2) Rick, The Frugal Travel Guy, hinted at a new offer for his “favorite card,” which is the American Express SPG card.

3) A reader wrote in saying that a telephone representative asked him to call back in mid-to-late July to get a better deal on the SPG card.

I cancelled my American Express SPG card in early 2009 so I’m curious to test out the theory that American Express will allow me to get a new sign-on bonus if I have not had that particular card (in this case the SPG card) for the last 2 years.

I’m low on hotel points and 30,000 SPG points would be a great way to have more Big Travel with Small Money!

WorldWanderlusting writes about how he managed to get an additional 5,000 Starpoints just by asking.  So it may not hurt to call or send a message to American Express asking them if they could match this offer for you.

Do you think there will be a new SPG offer soon?  Tell us about it in the comments!

The 30k offer is out now. There is a personal and business card offer – so if you lie to sign up as a business (or sole proprietorship) you may be able to get that bonus again. I can refer you for the SPG AMEX Business Card (not the personal one) you if you send me an mail to highman – add – gmail.com.

@TJ – Thanks for the offer, but I’ve already got a referral to the personal card.

You nailed it! Many people were speculating more points but your expectation turned out to be correct! 😀

@Simon – I was hoping I’d be wrong! More points are always better, but I do like that the spend necessary to get the bonus SPG points has reduced from $15,000 in 6 months to $4,500 in 3 months.

Last year I had the SPG card at the time the 30,000 bonus point offer was available. I wrote Amex asking them to match the offer and they said they could not, however, I could cancel my account and re-apply. So I did and they gave me the full 30K. I did the same for my wife (canceled and reapplied after she was told to through SM). Then we also both got the business for another 30K. Amex just gave me a $65 statement credit when I asked them to waive the annual fee. I hope I can repeat last year.

@Jason – That’s great news! I had heard that you have to wait for 2 years after cancelling to get the sign-up bonus for an AMEX again. Sounds like you got a very good deal!

I really hope SPG/Amex ups the forthcoming offer higher than 30k. There have been some incredible 100k offers lately. I highly doubt they go that high but a nice 50-75k offer would be terrific. I have held out for almost 8 months waiting for something better than the 10k + 15k offer.

@Megan – I’m hoping for a good offer too! We’ll know in the next 10 to 15 days.

@Sheldon Christensen – I hope they come out with a good offer!

@Eric – I hope so too – 50,000+ SPG points would be very nice!
