  1. There is a better offer on the Marriott card. I just logged into my Marriott account and booked a room, then got an offer for 1 free category 1-4 night on approval, then 70K points after $1K spend in 3 months. $85 annual fee is waived the first year, and 1 free category 1-5 night is included at every anniversary. Looks like all benefits are the same, except an extra 20K points.

  2. Hey Daraius, love your site. Been a huge help in jumpstarting our quest for points and miles 🙂

Question: My wife is going to get the Citi Hilton card. I already have a Honors account with Gold status. Can we point the Citi card to my Hilton account and keep funneling that one? Or should she open an Honors account and start building that? Opening the credit card in my name won’t be an option for several months.

  4. Daraius,

I have a couple of questions regarding Club Carlson’s program. My wife and mother-in-law are planning a 2 night trip and would like to stay at a Country Inn & Suites. I would use the last night free rewards. (1) Is there a problem with me making the reservation and my wife checking in? (2) Can you get the last night free if you use the “points + cash” option? Thanks!

    • @WJ – You can’t use them on points and cash option. But your wife should be able to check-in if you add her as the 2nd guest and let the hotel know that she will check in before you.

@grey – Thanks for your kind words! Just be aware that the terms of the Starwood card says that you can’t get the bonus again unless you have cancelled the card for at least 12 months.

  5. Thanks Darius. Took a while, but i was finally able to apply and get the Starwoods once more. You get paid to provide a great service to us. And yet you remain sincere and generous.

  6. @Darius- Yup. It’s been well over a year.

  8. Yes, Daraius, I was about to cancel my Delta card and they offered the “upgrade” to the Surpass card – even kept the same card number. Got 50,000 points already but was hoping for some more … 🙂

  9. A small data for those who are applying for US Bank Club Carlson Premier and Business. My husband and I applied for both personal and business at the same time. We received an instant approval for all four; however, the whole process took 3 weeks for the personal and over a month for the business applications. An instant approval from US Bank is not the same as that from Citi or Chase, especially for the business application. We received letters after 10 days that they needed to verify our businesses (sole proprietorship). It took a few more days to talk to the investigation department as they were in the different time zone. After we submitted the documents (business license, business bank account, etc.), it took another two weeks for my husband and 19 days for me to receive the cards. The investigation department is speedy in resubmitting the applications as long as you can provide them with the documents, but they are not the ones to approve. We will NEVER cancel theses cards!

  11. Hi Darius, Thank you for all the great website, I have learned a lot from you in the last few months that I have been at your website. I have a couple of questions
    1. Between Marriott and Hyatt which one is a better card?
    2. How do I find the Marriott brand categories?

    Thanks for your help

  13. if I had a marriot rewards card and canceled 2 years ago can I get the 70k points for another one?

  14. Hi Darius! I’m relatively new to the points game and can’t thank you enough for the information you provide. I’ve stayed in Munich for Oktoberfest and flown to Guatemala and Scotland for free because of your site – this year alone!

Scanning your sight (and others), I keep seeing the Starwood come up as a “favorite” and one worth paying the annual fee to keep. With only 30K sign-up bonus, with a relatively high spending requirement ($5K), I just can’t seem to figure out why its so highly acclaimed. I’m certain there is something I’m missing, as I’m new to all this, so would so appreciate a quick overview of why 30K Starwood points are better than 70K Hilton or Hyatt or Club Carlson or Marriott, etc. points.

    You’re the best!

  15. Hi Darius, is the Chase Marriott Rewards Visa Card churnable? Is so, how long after closing it should I wait before reapplying for their card to obtain the points?
    Have a great new Year!

  16. Hi Darius, follow up question to WJ. Will that strategy also work on the Hyatt certificate? I am waiting to receive mine after finishing minimum spend and my daughter and her friend are heading to the Andaz in West Hollywood in April. Also, the rates go up for redemptions next week. Do I need to transfer points from chase to hyatt to make the reservation at the cheaper rate to hold the room while I wait for the certificate? Multi-faceted question! 😉

    • @smay – You could do that, but there is no guarantee that you’ll find an award room when it is time to book with the certificate. But at least you’ve got a room held for that contingency. Award availability usually increases as your stay approaches (provided the hotel is not sold out).

  17. Hi Daraius,

I think you had a post that give out a coupon to have free membership for a year to some hotel booking website that has discount price. I forgot the name of that. Can you remind me. Thanks

  18. i have applied the “Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express” from the links above and got approved .. 🙂 Thanks

  19. I notice in the terms that came with the Starwood card, it says ” Eligible purchases do not include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of cash equivalents.” With respect to the last two categories, this may make it difficult to meet the 5K spending requirements.
Now considering whether I should focus on other cards in the hotel category?.

    • @riz… – Congrats and thanks for using our links!

@Lynn – That’s only if you buy them directly from American Express or a bank. But buying cards at grocery stores etc. does count towards the minimum spending requirements.

  20. Daraius–Do you have a link for the Chase IHG card?

  21. Thanks, I knew I had seen it on the site but couldn’t find it under hotel cards where I expected it. Sorry, couldn’t get you credit for it. Did use you for a couple of other apps so hopefully it evens out :).

  22. Of all the hotel credit/charge cards out there, which one do you find the most valuable in getting the best bang for the buck(Hilton, Starwood, Hyatt, Marriott, Holiday Inn, Carlson, etc). I’m mainly a domestic traveler at this point. But, may consider travelling to Europe or Asia next year.

  23. Looks like the link for American Express Hilton HHonors card expired 🙁

  24. Hi Darius,

The link for the American Express Hilton Honors (#2) is no longer working. However, the exact same offer was emailed to me today, and here is the updated link:

Your blog has been so helpful..thanks so much for putting it out there. We accumulated enough points/miles cover many of the costs of our vacation to Italy last year and our points/miles are covering the cost of our flight & hotel for our trip to Paris this April!

  25. Daraius:

IHG has a 90 second video anyone can watch and get 1000 points.
Also, at end have an opportunity to sign up for an 80K Chase IHG Visa.
Didn’t see IHG under your CC deals, so thot I would alert u and your readers. Go to and enter the code “jaxesqqaa60”, watch 90 second video and offer appears at the end.

  26. Despite it being over 12 months since having an SPG card, I hit the $5k spend and haven’t got the 15k SPG points. Think I got hosed.

Anyone else got hit by this?

    • @Kelli – Thanks for the new link! I’ve updated the post with the new link. Thanks for sharing your success. These are my favorite kind of comments!

@Soosie – I updated the link with a new one.

@Marshall – The Travel Cards page isn’t an extensive listing. But I do have it listed on the “Hot Deals” tab where I list many more cards.

@grey – Some folks haven’t got the bonus for being current AMEX cardholders.

  27. SPG is hands down the best IF you are converting to airlines. I use it primarily for that reason. And the elephant in the room is that your conversion rate matters. 1 to 1 on spg. The other hotels or cards don’t buy 1 to 1 miles. If you want singapore airlines you can transfer one to one but if you use CSP and transfer to United it’ll cost you more for the same flight/similar flight. All these point cards make you believe you are getting a ton of points but when you redeem them it takes thousands more. I calculate how much 20000$ gets me on spg card or other hotel cards. THEN how much you can convert it over to the airline, THEN calculate how many points it take to redeem for the same flights. SPG comes out ahead hands down, since it transfers to airlines I actually use unlike the CSP which I have to pretty much use United which takes more points to redeem a similar flight that is flying to Asia. points aren’t valuable if you can’t use it. With SPG i can directly move the points over to the asian airlines and combine it with the miles I already earned whereas CSP you can only do that on United. ANd since I spend more than the avg american thanks to work SPG will more than pay for the 65$ annual fee. Value isn’t all in the the math. If you can’t use it for the things you would already use it doesn’t have the same inherent value even if the straight math is better in other hotel cards or airline cards. The no foriegn ex fee is in my CSP. I don’t need another hotel card for no foriegn ex fee if I don’t get the same value from it as SPG. If I become a bigger spender I’ll just switch to an amex card but it has a way higher annual fee which lowers the value. And the bonus game is not something i need to waste my time on. It’s stupid to open and close a card every other year rather than finding a set of cards that meet your needs and stick with it.

  28. I’ve recently been approve for Chase INK and Chase Sapphire. Do I have a chance of being approved for the Chase Marriott Premier card?

  29. Daraius, you are such a great help. I appreciate all that you do.

Am I eligible for The SPG AMEX with rewards points if I am a current AMEX cardholder?

  30. Is the Hyatt card no longer available? I don’t see it on this page.

    • @Don – Check the application when you click to apply, because sometimes you are offered a lower bonus for already being an AMEX cardholder.

@Ken – It is on the Hot Deals tab (which is the more exhaustive list).

  31. Hi Darius!

Newbie question…if I sign up for a card ex…advantage citi and spend $3,000 and get the 50,000 points….do you just cancel the card and reopen a new one and just keep repeating the cycle? Or do you just rotate opening different cards to maximize? Better yet..what’s the best way to go about this?

    • @THAIFOOD – I usually keep the card for 9 t 10 months and then evaluate whether it is worth keeping the card for any additional perks. If not, I close the card. Usually, you can’t get the bonus again on the same card, but there are lots of new cards

  32. Darius,
Where is the hyatt card link? I am planning to apply and use your link. But can’t find one here

  33. Your 75K American Express Hilton HHonors Surpass link above has expired. The 60K link is still active however it looks like $75 annual fee is no longer waived. Do you have anything better than that for this card?

  34. Does anyone know if the 70,000 point offer for the Marriott Visa is still working? When I follow the link he application page itself does not mention the bonus amount.

  35. Daraius,

I hope you and Emily are doing well!

I got a special offer almost a year ago from US Bank for the Club Carlson Reward Card (60,000 offer) and in this targeted piece of mail offered this deal with No Annual fee for the first year. So, I took the offer.

I applied and was approved. I suspect that the 25,000 annual renewal points are worth the 2nd year’s annual fee of $50.

My question is, can I still get approved for the Premiere offer, giving me the potential for 85,000 points for $75, if I already have the regular card?

  36. If we had the starwood AMEX before and cancelled, can we get it again and get the bonus? If yes…How long do we have to wait?

    • @Mike M. – It may be possible, but US Bank is tough with approvals!

@Jana Miller – The terms used to say that it should be 12 months from when you last had the card.. But it depends on what the application says when you apply since it keeps changing.

  37. On the two free Hyatt nights for the Hyatt card… can they be used back-to-back as part of a 5-night stay? Or must they be seperate stays? The terms are a bit vague in respect to that kind of detail.

  38. New to the Game

I just received a targeted offer for the Marriott Rewards Premier Card.
100,000K points after 5k spend in 3 months.

I’m a Platinum Member and seriously considering taking up this offer

  39. @ jerry and darius, that offer for 70K bonus points has expired, only 50K points available. I was going to sign up myself tonight, and called their customer service, but they would not match the 70K bonus they were offering back in january. Darius, please update the post to reflect the 70K points offer is no longer available.

@ New to the Game, is there a way for me to get a targeted offer like this?

  40. European Weekend?

Thank you for the information. It’s a lot to go through.

I want to get a card that I can use solely to accumulate enough points, quickly, for a weekend at a fancy hotel in Europe when I’m there in August/September (I ended up with a steal of a round trip ticket thanks to the Barclay Arrival card). It would be nice to break from the hostels for a couple nights. I have a credit score approaching 800 and am willing to take the hit from cancelling a hotel card if it avoids a fee.

Longevity not being a concern, focus being on a quick bonus, which card would you recommend?

  41. Just so you know, your American Express HHonors card link does not work. The website says it has expired.

  42. Daraius,
I am considering the Hyatt card for the 2 night free sign on bonus. Can my wife also sign up separately and get an additional 2 noghts free, as long as we spend the minimum $2k in 3 months?
Thanks for all the great info.

  43. What hotel card do you recommend if I want a signup bonus that lets me stay for the most nights in a standard hotel? By a standard hotel, I mean something like a Holiday Inn. It should be better than a motel, but it doesn’t have to be luxurious like a Park Hyatt.

  44. thinking about staying at the huntington beach hyatt later in the year. which cards would allow me to
to accumulate lots of points for a stay there ?

i have many points with my aa, united, amex, and visa signature accounts. would i be able to transfer any of those points to a hyatt account?

  45. I love your web site. It has very useful information.
I have the Club Carlson Visa card. Would I loose all my points if I cancel the card?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

  46. Good day, Daraius.
I received a targeted offer for the 30k SPG Amex today. I’ve been waiting for the 30k offer for a few months now. I expected to have to wait until Sept for it to roll around again. I submitted my app and got the “received your app…it’s under review…look for a response from us in the mail within 2 weeks.” The only other Amex card I have is a Delta Skymiles that I’ve had for 10+ yrs. Should I call Amex today? Wait a few days and call? Best Amex # to call on this type thing? I’m a little too impatient to wait 2 weeks. Thanks for your advice.

  47. Darius,

This update is one of the things that’s been in the back of my mind that I am finally putting out there.

I did finally get the points. I called customer service. The Indian started arguing with me saying stuff like it make no sense to have an offer like that, and it doesn’t exist. I told them I still had the original offer and that the offer still exists currently, and I sent both to him. Then he said that he’ll open up a ticket and couldn’t do anything else, which is code for still not going to do anything and going to hang up now.

Some time later, I got an email asking to take a survey regarding my customer service call. I took it and of course gave it the lowest ratings. Some more time later, I got a call from an unrecognized number. An American left a voicemail with a number to call back following up on my survey. I called the number back, but his voicemail was full.

A week after that, he called me again, and this time I picked up. Seemed like he was a customer representative that works from home or something. I told him that I tried calling back. He apologized and said that emptied his voicemail and could accept messages now. Seemed untrue but oh well. Anyways, he was reading from a script. Said he would open up a ticket and in the meantime give me 5k points in the meantime. I told him that the last guy already opened up a ticket, but I told him thanks 5k points too. Then I said that I still have the offer and can I at least email him the offer to support my case.

He then was happy to read that because I have been such a long time customer of American Express that I would be given the points. When I got my statement, I did get the points, but they show as “courtesy” points, so it was that customer service guy’s intervention that got me the points, not the actual points offering.

Now mind you, I don’t like to yell at anyone. So when the customer service rep was being rude and raising his voice to me, I don’t reciprocate it back. If you have the patience and if you keep a copy of the original offer, it may workout like it did for me. Again, I’ve been told that I’m a very patient and even keel guy though.

  48. Hello,

Can the American Express Hilton HHonors Surpass points be converted to AMEX JetBlue points? Thanx!

  49. Hope you can help me. I applied Club Carlson Premier 4 months ago, but it was degraded to Club Carlson Rewards. Do you know if I can be upgraded to premier after 6 month? Or I should cancel this one, and then apple Premier again, but I still can get sign up bonus. Thanks.

  50. If I already have a Hilton honors card from AMEX, can I still sign up for the citi Hilton card?

  51. If my wife is Hilton silver status and i am gold, when she books rewards night from her account can we enjoy the breakfast benefit from my status?

  53. Darius, is the 30000 point SPG amex business card still available?if do, will you reply with a link. TIA

  54. Hi Darius. My wife and I are planning a wedding to happen sometime next year. For our honey moon we would like to travel to singapore or indonesia or thailand or maybe all of them. Which cards would you apply to make this trip more affordable?

  55. We are traveling to Europe 3 weeks and wanting to get hotel credit card. Our Marriott doesn’t seem much good because not many hotels to choose from and few there are would eat up most of our points (90,000 pts currently) for 1 or 2 stays! Hilton or ihg we are considering. We are 2 adults & 3 children. We stay Marriotts a lot in u.s. no problem…kids share fold out couch. I was told by Hyatt when I called US # they don’t allow more than 3 in room Europe. Found same restriction on both Hyatt’s and Marriotts websites entering in our reservation info. We can’t afford nor do we want 2 Rooms. Do you know if they are that strict? Could we earn two free nights standard rooms and use them for all of us in one room based on your experience? We r looking at traveling Paris, Vienna,, germany and, maybe London and Rome. Most interested in using in Vienna or Paris. Trip sept/oct. 2014. I appreciate any guidance. Thank you!

  56. Hi,

I applied for both Citi Hilton Reserve and Citi Hilton Visa Signature Cards, but I was denied on the Citi Hilton Visa Signature card. I applied for both within 1 minute of each other. Is there anyway I can call Citi and request them to reconsider? I have never signed up for either of these cards (I love SPG lol), and my hilton honors account was just established today as well. Will they reconsider me for the Visa signature card?

    • @Julie – I can’t comment specifically, but usually hotels are stricter on room occupancy outside the US. You could try booking a club room etc. with a higher occupancy level.

@Jay – You usually have to wait ~7 days between Citi personal card applications. That said, it doesn’t hurt to call back and ask.

  57. Should I re-apply for the Citi card that i was denied on? I was approved on the reserve card, so should i re-apply for the visa signature card in 7 days? Or will I now have to wait?

  58. @Jay – Now that’s it’s been at least eight days since you applied, you should be able to call reconsideration and get approved for the signature card (assuming you haven’t applied for any other Citi cards). I wouldn’t reapply. Just call recon again.

  59. @Jay – (assuming you haven’t applied for any other Citi cards besides the Reserve)

  60. I tried re-applying after 8 days and i was still declined. Should I still call the reconsideration line?

  61. I’m up for my one year renewal on my Marriott card, however, I don’t have any plans to use the free night certificate within six months. Do you know of anyone that has been able to extend the certificate?

  62. Both our Starwood Preferred AmEx & Barclay required $10,000 use within 3 months.
What are the best programs out there now, where large amount gift cards can be purchase,
then easily transferred to a checking account, to be used to pay bills? Thanks

  63. @Debbie: I have had my certificates renewed twice so far. They have been super nice about it as I explained I simply have not had a chance to use it. The CSR did mention that this was not guarantee but since I do a lot of spending on my Marriott card, this seemed to have helped with both decisions. Once approved, they cancel the old certificate and reissue a new one.

  64. Just applied for the Citi Hilton card. Spend $2500 in 4 months and get 2 free weekend nights. I was wondering how quickly the 2 free nights post if I were to spend $2500 in the first month?

    • dhammer53 – You get the certificates via email, so I’d make sure that your email address with Hilton is up to date. You should get them by the next month if you complete the spending within 8 to 10 days of the statement closing.

  65. Can accumulated Starwood points be transferred to another household family’s account?

Same applies for American Airline mileage points….
Many of our household family members have accumulated AA points anywhere from 50,000 – 200,000 points…. Would it be possible to transfer the 50,000 member’s points to the account with 200,000? I’m thinking it would make it a easier booking if we wish to book award flights for household members on the slight flight together, with seating together rather than separately….. what do you think?

  66. Can you get the Hyatt bonus again after canceling Chase Hyatt Card and resigning up later.

  67. I am wondering about the Chase Hyatt Card- can you get the 2 free nights again after canceling card and waiting several months.

  68. @Bill H – Looks like you have to wait at least 24 months. “This new cardmember bonus offer is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of this consumer credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of this consumer credit card who received a new cardmember bonus for this consumer credit card within the last 24 months.”

  69. What card do you recommend to get for hotels in Tokyo, Japan and Hong Kong? Thanks.

  70. Any chance the Citi Hilton Honors card will bump the bonus back to 50000 points in the spring/summer? I have never applied for this card and am considering doing so. However, I am waiting to see if the sign up bonus will increase from 40000 to 50000 as it did last year.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance

  71. If you and a spouse each get a Hyatt card, can you combine the 4 nights?

Is there a list where the Citi Hilton “select” hotels are? Same question as above, can we can combine the “2 nights” from two cards to make 4 nights?

In short, we’re looking to go to Maui and Kona in 2016. I’m trying to decide between Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt and SPG which will get us the most nights free. Looking at 4 nights in Maui, 2 in Kona. Splitting up brands at the two locations is fine.

  72. I am considering applying for the Citi Hilton Honors card but I can’t seem to find the answer to my question in the offer details for the card: Is a Sunday night stay considered a weekend night reservation or is it just Friday and Saturday night stays? Thanks so much!

  73. Hi Darius,
Thanks for all your valuable/invaluable suggestions about travel. Sometime last week I posted a question on your site but now cannot find it, or your response (nor can I remember exactly where I posted it). The question:

I know that the spending amount has recently gone down for the personal Starwoods card – does the promotional point value ever go higher than 25k for either the personal or business?

    Thanks much,

  74. Would you know what happens with this:

I got the hilton amex, met the spending requirement in 1 month
Got the 1st bill – got the bonus miles, it shows in my hilton account. The monthly bill has the annual fee as part of the bill
My wife doesn’t want me spending the annual fee.
If I call amex to cancel the card because of the fee
    a) will they waive it? we did ring up $4,000 in spending in < 1 month. do they want that much spending as a customer badly?
    b) if they don't want to waive the fee, and I have them close the account…. will the bonus miles stay in the hilton account or do they pull them back?

    THANKS for a great site!!!

  80. SPG AMEX card will not pay the welcome bonus if you have EVER had an SPG AMEX card before. I cancelled my last one in 2013, so i was over 2 years until I reapplied and they still will not pay the bonus starpoints. just a note for those who are not new to credit card bonuses.

  82. Daraius, on the Club Carlson cards (personal and business), you list one of the benefits as “1 free award night when you redeem points for 2 or more consecutive award nights at the same hotel.” Best as I can tell, that’s no longer the case and your information needs to be updated. If it does still apply, please let me know!

  83. @Salathiel – Thanks for catching that! I’ve updated the page.

  86. I applied for chase Marriott and th turned me down saying I’ve opened too many credit cards in the past 2 years. I haven’t had the Marriott card in over 2 years and only have one chase credit card at the moment. Any suggestions? Is this something new banks are looking at?
