I am on my way to getting the Southwest Companion Pass with the Chase Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Plus card and Chase Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Business card 50,000 point sign-up bonuses. And by transferring points from Marriott.
Will it speed things up if I pay the balances on my cards in advance? If I cancel the credit cards so I can do this again in another 24 months will I lose my Companion Pass?
Great questions, Steve! And congratulations on almost earning the 110,000 Southwest points needed for the Companion Pass, which is my favorite deal in travel!
Your Partner Can Fly With You for Almost Free When You Have The Southwest Companion Pass, Which Is My Favorite Deal in Travel!
Unfortunately, you can NOT speed up receiving the Companion Pass by paying your credit card balances early. Although, it is a good habit to pay your bill early!
And cancelling your credit cards after you receive the Companion Pass will not affect your status. But, it’s usually a good idea to keep a credit card open for ~10 months before deciding whether to cancel it.
I’ll explain more!

I have recently been targeted for both the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer credit card and the Chase Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Visa card for 50,000 miles each. Currently, I have 7 new credit card accounts in one year, including the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Hyatt card.
My question is, if I apply for and receive the Southwest card, can I transfer American Express Starwood Preferred Guest points to Southwest to help me reach the Companion Pass? I have read that I cannot do that with Chase Sapphire Preferred. Thanks!
Great question, Terri!
Unfortunately, Southwest is NOT currently a Starwood airline transfer partner. And you’re correct that transferring points from Chase Ultimate Rewards to Southwest will NOT count toward the Companion Pass.

However, there are lots of other ways to earn the 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year you need to qualify for the Companion Pass. I’ll explain!

There’s an amazing mistake fare this morning between several US cities and Peru on Avianca.
Via SecretFlying, you can fly to Cusco or Lima, Peru, for as little as ~$407 round-trip in Business Class! Travel dates are in June 2016.
That’s an incredible deal!
Because this is a mistake fare, there’s a chance it MAY not be honored. So don’t book non-refundable hotels or activities just yet!
