Folks who collect miles and points to get Big Travel with Small Money often focus much of their attention on award flights and free hotel stays.  But there are lots of other ways to save money once you get to your destination.

Sometimes, the most expensive part of a trip (if you got the flights and hotels for free) can be eating out at restaurants.  Especially if you’re traveling as a family or large group!

Emily and I use Restaurant.com to save money on meals when we go away (and sometimes at home, too).  If you’ve never used it before, I’ll show you how to get discounts AND miles & points!

Million Mile Secrets reader Tammy Horvath commented:

What does this mean:  “If you’re comfortable with using the cash and points trick, you can buy IHG Rewards points and then get a statement credit of 1 cent per Chase Ultimate Rewards point. This is a better value than redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards points directly for IHG Rewards points.”

I did the cash and points trick already in the past but is this referring to buying them with my Ink card or something?  I don’t understand how to get a statement credit of 1 cent per Ultimate Reward point.

Tammy is referring to the IHG Cash and Points trick, which allows you to “buy” IHG points for 0.7 cents per point.

You Can Buy IHG Points for 0.7 Cents Each and Stay at the Willard Intercontinental in Washington, DC

If you want to use Chase Ultimate Rewards points for IHG hotel stays, it’s better to use this trick than to transfer points directly to IHG.  I’ll explain why!

This series of posts is written by the Wandering US Expat, who’s lived in Australia and Panama.  And applied for cards from there!

Don’t let living abroad stop you from getting miles and points bonuses from credit cards!

It’s no secret that US banks lead the world in promotional point bonuses for new customers.  They give away lots of points to get a new customer in the hopes that you’ll remain, and spend, with them for years.  Lots of non-US folks wish they could get access to the same deals!

But many US citizens and ex-permanent residents, known as expats, often wonder whether they can still get credit cards if they leave or have already left the US.  Perhaps they’ve relocated for a job or have gone for an extended trip abroad.  Some expats have left permanently to start a new life.
