Does the AMEX Business Platinum Pay With Points Perk Work for Family Member Airfare?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Jessica, commented:

Does the 50% points back Pay With Points perk with The Enhanced Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN work for airfare purchased for family members who are not cardholders?  I booked a flight for myself, but need to purchase flights for my 3 children.  Can I purchase their tickets and get 50% of the points back?

Excellent question, Jessica!

The good news is the Business Platinum Pay With Points perk is NOT just for the primary cardholder.

As long as you use AMEX Membership Rewards points linked to your Business Platinum card, you’ll be eligible to get 50% of the points back after booking coach flights on your selected airline.  Or on Business Class or First Class flights on any airline.  It doesn’t matter who the passengers are!

This is a terrific perk for family travel because sometimes you can’t find enough available award seats when transferring points directly to an airline partner.

Virgin America Points Will Convert to Alaska Airlines Miles at a 1:1.3 Ratio

There’s lots of Alaska Airlines news today!  I shared details of Alaska Airlines’ new award chart and the ending of their partnership with Delta.  This comes after last week’s closing of the deal to merge Alaska Airlines with Virgin America.

And now, via One Mile at a Time, we know that you’ll be able to convert Virgin America points to Alaska Airlines miles at a 1 : 1.3 ratio some time after January 9, 2017.

Lots of folks love earning and using Alaska Airlines miles, especially for flights on partners like American Airlines.  And if you already have a lot of Virgin America points, this is good news.

But some might consider transferring flexible points from AMEX Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou (until January 22, 2017), or Starwood to Virgin America.  And then transfer Virgin America points to Alaska Airlines at the 1 : 1.3 ratio.

The Secret Way to Get the Most Southwest Flights From Your Points!

I think the 50% points back perk opens up a terrific new way to use AMEX Membership Rewards points for Southwest flights.

Plus the points I earned from the Business Platinum’s 100,000-point sign-up bonus and minimum spending requirement can get me $2,300 worth of paid Southwest airfare!  That’s a great deal!

But unlike other airlines in the AMEX Pay With Points program, you can NOT book Southwest flights online through the AMEX travel portal.
