Lyn:   I love Southwest for many reasons, including the fantastic low prices they regularly offer to many of my favorite destinations like Denver, Florida, California, and New York City.

What Are the Differences Between Using British Airways or Iberia Avios Points?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Gabriel, commented:

Is there a difference between using British Airways or Iberia Avios points?

And reader Lori asked:

Is there any other way to get activity in your Iberia account other than moving AMEX Membership Rewards points?

British Airways and Iberia are part of the same company.  The points you use for award flights on both airlines are called Avios.  But the airlines have different award charts and redemption rules.

Generally, Iberia Avios points can be more valuable than British Airways Avios points for short-haul partner award flights in the US.

For example, you can book a round-trip award flight less than 600 miles on American Airlines for 11,000 Iberia Avios points.  That’s 4,000 points cheaper than if you book with British Airways Avios points!

Reader Question: What’s the Best Miles & Points Strategy to Fly to Tahiti?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Ken, commented:

Could you recommend the best strategy for using miles and points to get 3 round-trip coach tickets from Los Angeles to Tahiti?  Currently, I have:

  • 106,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points
  • 70,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points
  • 15,000 American Airlines miles
  • 9,000 JetBlue points
  • 5,000 Starwood points
  • 1,000 Alaska Airlines miles

Great question, Ken!

There are a limited number of flights from Los Angeles to Tahiti, which is a popular route for folks looking to get to Bora Bora.  So this can make it harder to find good deals on award flights.

For example, Million Mile Secrets team member Keith recently spent lots of time researching this itinerary for a potential anniversary trip.  But the cash flight prices and award flights for his desired travel dates were extremely expensive, so he decided to pick a different destination.

That said, having flexibility with your travel dates and planning in advance can open up ways for reader Ken to accomplish his travel goal!

Can Authorized Users Earn the Card’s Sign-Up Bonus in the Future?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Diane, commented:

If I add an authorized user to my Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express, will this impact their ability to get the card and earn the sign-up bonus in the future?

Great question, Diane!

Adding an authorized user is a great way to earn points faster.  Because they can help you meet a card’s minimum spending requirement.

And authorized users can earn a sign-up bonus on the same card if they decide to apply in the future.

For example, if you’ve ever had the AMEX Starwood card as an authorized user, you’re still eligible to sign-up and get a bonus after meeting the spending requirements.

Which Sign-Up Bonus Will You Earn If Your Card Application Is Approved After a Limited Time-Offer End Date?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Amanda, commented:

I applied for the limited-time AMEX Starwood sign-up bonus on the last day of the offer.  But I was approved the day after the offer ended when the sign-up bonus decreased.  Will I earn the higher sign-up bonus?

Great question, Amanda!

Lots of folks wait until the end of a limited-time offer to apply for a card.  And this could be the reason your application isn’t instantly approved.

But as long as you submit your card application before the limited-time offer ends, you’re eligible to earn the sign-up bonus that was available on the day you applied.

Using Miles and Points to Save on a Family Trip to Las Vegas

Lyn writes about flying nearly free on Southwest Airlines on her GotoTravelGal.com blog and has written a free guide called, “The Step-by-Step Guide to Earning the Southwest Companion Pass and Flying Free Around the U.S.

Her family flies almost free on Southwest all over the country, so I’ve asked her to share tips on how to enjoy Big Travel with Small Money on a family trip to Las Vegas.

Lyn:   We recently spent time in Las Vegas on our way to and from Utah, where we hiked Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks.  Plus Grand Staircase National Monument, and 2 amazing state parks, Kodachrome Basin, and Coral Pink Sand Dunes.

We flew Southwest to Las Vegas entirely on points.  And saved money by taking advantage of free or discounted activities.

25% Transfer Bonus for Converting Hotel Points to Airline Miles

Via One Mile at a Time, you can convert hotel points from 9 hotel programs to American Airlines and receive a 25% bonus through June 15, 2017.

I usually do NOT recommend transferring hotel points to airlines, because you’ll get much less value per point.  But there are some situations where it makes sense!
