How to Use Flexible Points With Different Banks to Book Multiple Airline Tickets on the Same Flight

Million Mile Secrets reader, Ray, commented:

I have enough Chase Ultimate Rewards points for one round-trip flight to Spain.  But I would need to use my AMEX Membership Rewards points for a 2nd airline ticket.  Any ideas how I can use points from both programs for a trip for 2 to Spain on the same airline?

Excellent question, Ray!

The trick is to take advantage of airline alliances, which let you to use partner airline miles to book an award flight.

Ray can transfer his flexible AMEX and Chase points to airline partners within any of the 3 major airline alliances – OneworldSkyTeam, and Star Alliance.  So it’s possible to choose different AMEX and Chase airline transfer partners and still book 2 tickets on the same flight.

What’s the Difference Between US Bank FlexPoints and Altitude Points?

A Million Mile Secrets reader emailed:

How do the US Bank travel credit cards work?  Can I redeem points for a statement credit or only toward travel purchases?

This is a great question!

US Bank has 2 different kinds of points – FlexPoints and Altitude points.  You can redeem both types of points for travel, statement credits, or gift cards.  But you’ll get the most value using your points toward travel.

For example, you can earn 50,000 points with the new US Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite® Card after meeting minimum spending requirements.  The sign-up bonus is worth $750 toward travel.  But you would only get $500 if you redeemed the points for a statement credit.

You’ll Get the Most Value for Your US Bank FlexPoints or Altitude Points By Booking Travel, Like Rental Cars

I’ll compare US Bank FlexPoints and Altitude points.  And show an example of how many points you’ll use for a flight.

Emily and I don’t earn a commission for the US Bank Altitude Reserve card, but we’ll always share the best deals with our readers!

How You Earn Flexible Bank Points With Several Cards in the Same Program

Million Mile Secrets reader, Amy, commented:

Is American Express Membership Rewards similar to Chase Ultimate Rewards where you earn points on each card individually?  Or are AMEX Membership Rewards points pooled into one account automatically?

Fantastic question, Amy!

When you have multiple cards that earn AMEX Membership Rewards points, all of your rewards will automatically accumulate in one account.

This is different from other flexible bank points programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou where you earn points in separate accounts.

But with all 3 programs, it’s important to keep at least 1 card active to avoid losing all your flexible points.

Multiple Flexible Points Credit Cards

Flexible Points Are Key to Big Travel! So It’s Good to Know How You Earn Points With Several Cards in the 3 Major Flexible Points Programs.

I’ll explain how folks with multiple cards in the same program earn flexible points with AMEX, Chase, and Citi!
