How to Use Flexible Points With Different Banks to Book Multiple Airline Tickets on the Same Flight

Million Mile Secrets reader, Ray, commented:

I have enough Chase Ultimate Rewards points for one round-trip flight to Spain.  But I would need to use my AMEX Membership Rewards points for a 2nd airline ticket.  Any ideas how I can use points from both programs for a trip for 2 to Spain on the same airline?

Excellent question, Ray!

The trick is to take advantage of airline alliances, which let you to use partner airline miles to book an award flight.

Ray can transfer his flexible AMEX and Chase points to airline partners within any of the 3 major airline alliances – OneworldSkyTeam, and Star Alliance.  So it’s possible to choose different AMEX and Chase airline transfer partners and still book 2 tickets on the same flight.

3 Best Ways to Use Starwood and Marriott Points for United Airlines Award Flights

Million Mile Secrets reader, Patrick, commented:

Is it better to transfer Starwood points directly to United Airlines OR convert them to Marriott points and then transfer to United Airlines miles?

It’s typically NOT a good deal to transfer Starwood points directly to United Airlines.  Because the transfer ratio isn’t favorable.  You only get 1 United Airlines mile for every 2 Starwood points you transfer.

You’ll do better converting your Starwood points to Marriott points.  Then, transfer Marriott points to United Airlines miles.

But there’s another way to use your Starwood or Marriott points for award flights on United Airlines, which might be the best deal!

How to Book Disney Trips With AMEX Membership Rewards Points

Ken and his wife Emily write about using points and miles (and saving money) on Disney trips at Mousehacking.com.  So I’ve asked them to share their tips on booking trips to Walt Disney World and Disneyland using AMEX Membership Rewards points.

Ken and Emily:  American Express Membership Rewards points are valuable because of their great flexibility.  And you can transfer them to 20 airline and hotel partners.

If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World or Disneyland, getting the most out of these transfer partners can be the key to saving Big Money!

In most cases you’ll get more value from transferring AMEX Membership Rewards points to airline partners than to hotel partners.  You’ll want to keep this in mind to avoid using your AMEX Membership Rewards points now on a hotel stay if you could get much better value out of them in the future.

Reader Tip to Help Folks Use the Fewest Points for Airfare

Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

Million Mile Secrets reader, NB, commented:

A word of caution for other readers.  Always check an airline site to see how many frequent flyer miles they are charging for a flight.  Because even with travel portal bonuses, you might still use fewer miles by transferring points directly to an airline and booking an award flight.

For example, I found Southwest airfare for $211, which would require ~16,880 Chase Ultimate Rewards points from my Sapphire Preferred ($211 cost of airfare / 1.25 cents per point) if booked through the Chase travel portal.

But Southwest was charging 12,601 Southwest points for the same flight.  So I instantly transferred Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio and booked the award flight.

This is terrific advice, NB!

Some folks can develop certain habits when booking award travel and miss opportunities to save miles and points!

For example, I recently shared 3 examples of booking Southwest flights, which result in different values for your Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

And you’ll likely come across similar scenarios when comparing award flight prices on with other airline transfer partners vs. flight prices through a travel portal.

Rumor: Electronics Ban to Include Flights From Many Popular Vacation Destinations!

A few months ago, I let you know about the electronics ban on flights to the US from 10 cities.  Now, according to One Mile at a Time, it’s rumored the ban will soon include flights from ALL of Europe!

This isn’t good news for folks who like to use their devices to get work done or watch movies in-flight.  Because if it’s an extension of the current electronics ban, only cell phones, smartphones, and necessary medical equipment will be allowed in the cabin.
