Will You Lose Flexible Points If You Cancel a Card?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Fran, emailed:

I was told by an AMEX representative that I would lose my AMEX Membership Rewards points if I cancel my Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express.  Is this true?

Generally speaking, if you cancel a card that earns flexible bank points, you will lose them.  This goes for cards that earn AMEX Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Citi ThankYou points.

Certain banks give you a grace period to use points after cancelling a card.  But there are also a few ways to preserve them.

Flexible Points Are the Key to Big Travel!  So Don’t Let Those Hard-Earned Points Disappear by Cancelling a Credit Card!

Don’t Miss Out on These 5 Sign-Up Bonuses If You’re Close to the “5/24” Limit

Million Mile Secrets reader, Myles, tweeted:

I’ve opened 4 new cards in the past 24 months.  If I get the Chase Amazon Prime card, will it count toward Chase’s “5/24” card limit and keep me from getting other Chase cards in the future?

Unless Myles gets certain small business cards, new cards from ANY bank will count toward Chase’s card limit.

Because Myles is just shy of reaching 5 new cards in the past 24 months, he’ll want to choose his next card wisely!

If you’re in a similar situation, the best choice for a 5th card depends on which cards you already have and your travel goals!

Can You Earn More Than One Sign-Up Bonus With the Same AMEX Business Card?

Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

A Million Mile Secrets reader emailed:

I was recently approved for a 2nd Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express.  My 1st card is for a different business.  Am I eligible to earn the sign-up bonus twice?

It’s possible, but very unlikely you’ll earn multiple sign-up bonuses with the same AMEX small business card.  Even if you apply using separate Employer Identification Numbers (EINs).

The general rule is AMEX restricts personal and small business card sign-up bonuses to once, per person, per lifetime.

And I spoke with an AMEX representative who confirmed sign-up bonuses are intended for new applicants only.

Before Applying for the Same AMEX Small Business Card Again, Consider It’s Unlikely You’ll Get the Sign-Up Bonus Twice!

Instead of potentially not getting a sign-up bonus with the same AMEX card, I’ll share other ways to increase your points balances!

Avoid Duplicate Card Perks and 2 Annual Fees by Downgrading This Chase Card

Million Mile Secrets reader, John, commented:

I recently got the Chase Sapphire Reserve card because of the sign-up bonus and 3X bonus on dining.  Plus, I’ll use the $300 annual travel credit without a problem.  Is there any reason to hold on to the Chase Sapphire Preferred?

Great question, John!  And thank you for being a continued reader of our blog!

There’s no reason to keep both cards.  Because the Sapphire Reserve has all of the same benefits as the Sapphire Preferred, and then some.

So you can downgrade your Sapphire Preferred card to a no annual fee Chase card and avoid having duplicate benefits.  And you can save money on the annual fee.

If You Recently Got the Sapphire Reserve, You Can Downgrade the Sapphire Preferred to Avoid Duplicate Benefits and 2 Annual Fees

I’ll compare both cards.  And explain what I recently did in this situation!

When Can You Transfer the Freedom Unlimited Sign-Up Bonus to Chase Travel Partners?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Prabha, sent an question via email:

With the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, when can I transfer the sign-up bonus of 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to airline partners like United Airlines instead of redeeming for $150 cash back?

Great question, Prabha!

Earning transferable points like Chase Ultimate Rewards points is the trick to travel flexibility!  And often times, you can get more value for your points by transferring to airline and hotel partners instead of redeeming for cash back.

But to transfer Chase points to travel partners from no annual fee cards like the Freedom or Freedom Unlimited, you’ll need to have another eligible Chase card, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Otherwise, the points you earn with the Freedom Unlimited can only be redeemed for 1 cent each for cash back or towards travel.

Transferable Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

The Sign-Up Bonus With the Freedom Unlimited Can Be Worth More When You Have a 2nd Chase Ultimate Rewards Card! For Example, You Can Get a Free Night at the Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara Hotel, Which Can Cost $200+!

I’ll explain when Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to airline and hotels partners for Big Travel!
