New Partner: Is It Worth Transferring Citi ThankYou Points to JetBlue?

There’s a new Citi ThankYou airline transfer partner!  Effective immediately, you can transfer Citi ThankYou points to JetBlue.

The transfer ratio you’ll get depends on which Citi cards you have.  You’ll get a better deal if you have the Citi Prestige Card , Citi ThankYou Premier Card, or Citi Chairman (no longer offered) card.

This is also the first time Citi’s allowed folks who only hold no-annual-fee Citi ThankYou cards, like the Citi ThankYou Preferred Card and Citi Forward, to transfer their points to a travel partner.  But the transfer ratio is less favorable.

Thanks to Twitter user IAD Gr8 for tweeting us about the news!

How to Combine Your Citi ThankYou Points for Big Travel

If you have more than 1 Citi ThankYou account, you might want to combine them.

Because the redemption value you get for airfare, hotels, cruises, and car rentals booked through the Citi ThankYou portal will depend on which credit card your Citi ThankYou points are linked to.

For example, you’ll get 1.25 cents per point for points linked to your Citi ThankYou Premier card used to book hotels, cruises and car rentals.  And you’ll get 1.33 cents per point on airfare when the points are linked to your Citi Prestige card.

Or combining accounts might give you the opportunity to transfer points from an old Citi card like the ThankYou Preferred to airline and hotel partners.

It’s also easier to manage your Citi ThankYou points when they’re in 1 account.

New Citi Rules Restrict Sign-Up Bonuses to Once per “Brand” Every 24 Months

There’s bad news for folks who like Citi cards.

Via Doctor of Credit, Citi’s changed their application rules to restrict folks from earning the sign-up bonus from more than one card of the same “brand” within 24 months.

Until now, most Citi cards would allow you to earn the sign-up bonus again if you hadn’t opened or closed that specific card in the past 24 months.  Now, they’ve tightened the rules so you can’t receive the bonus if you’ve opened or closed a card under the same family of cards in that timeframe.

So, for example, if you have or have had the Citi ThankYou Premier in the past 24 months, you won’t be approved for a Citi Prestige, which also earns Citi ThankYou points.

There’s no official word on these changes from Citi, except for new language in the terms and conditions for certain cards.  I’ll share what I know so far.
