What’s the Best Way to Purchase United Airlines Airfare?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Timothy, commented:

What’s the best way to get the most bang for my buck paying for United Airlines airfare?  Should I use the Chase United Explorer or Chase Sapphire Reserve card?  Or should I purchase airfare through the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal?

Excellent questions, Timothy!

If you’re purchasing a United Airlines flight, you’ll most likely want to pay with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

Because you’ll earn 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards pointswhich are my favorite flexible points to earn!  You’ll also get better travel protection benefits, like baggage and trip delay coverage.

But if you don’t have United Airlines elite status, paying with the Chase United Explorer can save you money if you’re checking a bag!

You can also use points to pay for airfare through the Chase travel portal.  But you might be better off saving these points for a more valuable award.

Avoid Duplicate Card Perks and 2 Annual Fees by Downgrading This Chase Card

Million Mile Secrets reader, John, commented:

I recently got the Chase Sapphire Reserve card because of the sign-up bonus and 3X bonus on dining.  Plus, I’ll use the $300 annual travel credit without a problem.  Is there any reason to hold on to the Chase Sapphire Preferred?

Great question, John!  And thank you for being a continued reader of our blog!

There’s no reason to keep both cards.  Because the Sapphire Reserve has all of the same benefits as the Sapphire Preferred, and then some.

So you can downgrade your Sapphire Preferred card to a no annual fee Chase card and avoid having duplicate benefits.  And you can save money on the annual fee.

If You Recently Got the Sapphire Reserve, You Can Downgrade the Sapphire Preferred to Avoid Duplicate Benefits and 2 Annual Fees

I’ll compare both cards.  And explain what I recently did in this situation!

How to Add a Companion to Southwest Flights Booked Through a Travel Portal

Million Mile Secrets reader, Camilla, commented:

Can you book a Southwest flight through the Chase travel portal using Chase Ultimate Rewards points, and then add a companion if you have the Companion Pass?

Folks with the Companion Pass can add a companion to any Southwest flight.  It doesn’t matter if it’s booked directly through the airline or a travel portal!

This is good news for folks with the Companion Pass looking to get Big Travel on Southwest with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.  Because points linked to your Sapphire Reserve account are worth 1.5 cents each when you book travel through Chase.

Or those using the Pay With Points perk with the The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN.

I Found My New Best Friend Traveling to London: Part 10 – Phantom of the Opera and London at Night

Emily:   I love to travel, and my mom does, too!

When I was growing up in Ohio, we could only afford road trips to local amusement parks.  But collecting miles and points has opened up a whole new world of travel neither of us thought possible!

She and I decided to go to London and Paris for a mother-daughter getaway.  We flew Business Class and stayed in 5-star hotels.  I paid for this trip for a fraction of the retail cost by using airline miles and hotel points.

I’ve never traveled so long with my mom before, and at the end of the trip, I felt like I had a new best friend!  Without the miles & points hobby, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience the joy of traveling with my mom.
