When Can You Transfer the Freedom Unlimited Sign-Up Bonus to Chase Travel Partners?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Prabha, sent an question via email:

With the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, when can I transfer the sign-up bonus of 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to airline partners like United Airlines instead of redeeming for $150 cash back?

Great question, Prabha!

Earning transferable points like Chase Ultimate Rewards points is the trick to travel flexibility!  And often times, you can get more value for your points by transferring to airline and hotel partners instead of redeeming for cash back.

But to transfer Chase points to travel partners from no annual fee cards like the Freedom or Freedom Unlimited, you’ll need to have another eligible Chase card, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Otherwise, the points you earn with the Freedom Unlimited can only be redeemed for 1 cent each for cash back or towards travel.

The Sign-Up Bonus With the Freedom Unlimited Can Be Worth More When You Have a 2nd Chase Ultimate Rewards Card! For Example, You Can Get a Free Night at the Hyatt Centric Santa Barbara Hotel, Which Can Cost $200+!

I’ll explain when Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to airline and hotels partners for Big Travel!

Which Gas Stations Earn the 5X Bonus With Chase Freedom?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Eugene, commented:

Do Costco gas stations qualify for the current Chase Freedom 5X quarterly bonus category?

Chase Freedom’s quarterly bonus categories are a terrific way to earn valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  That’s one of the reasons I keep the Freedom card in my wallet!

So it’s important to know which merchants earn the 5X bonus.  Because Chase does NOT consider all places with fuel services as “gas stations”.

Although Chase excludes warehouse stores, many Million Mile Secrets readers have let me know that gas purchases at Costco and Sam’s Club might work for the 5X bonus!

Chase Sapphire Reserve Increases Value of Your Ultimate Rewards Points

Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

I love transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to travel partners, like Flying Blue, Hyatt, and United Airlines.  Because you’ll often get the most value for your points.  But there are times when using the Chase portal is a better deal when you want a specific flight or hotel because your travel dates aren’t as flexible.

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you’ll get a 50% bonus, or 1.5 cents per point, when you redeem points for travel through the Chase portal.  For example, this makes 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points worth $750 in travel instead of the $500 you’d get for redeeming points for cash back.

The best part is you can transfer points to your Sapphire Reserve card from other Chase Ultimate Rewards points cards like the Chase Freedom or Chase Ink Cash.  This means your existing points will increase in value!

How Does a Chase Product Change Impact Earning Future Sign-Up Bonuses?

Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

Million Mile Secrets reader, Mike, commented:

I recently got the Chase Sapphire Reserve and will product change my existing Chase Sapphire Preferred card to the Chase Freedom or Freedom Unlimited.  Will I be eligible to open a new Sapphire Preferred card in 24 months and earn a sign-up bonus at that time?

Excellent question!

I understand why Mike wants to product change his Sapphire Preferred to a no annual fee Chase card after getting the Sapphire Reserve.  He’ll save money on the Sapphire Preferred’s $95 annual fee while getting better perks with the Sapphire Reserve!

The good news is after you convert the Sapphire Preferred, Chase no longer considers you a cardholder.

This means Mike WILL be eligible to earn a sign-up bonus on Sapphire Preferred card in the future.  But there are certain rules to know.
