Merger Update: Big Changes Coming to Alaska Airlines and Virgin America!

The merger between Alaska Airlines and Virgin America continues to move forward, with some big changes coming in the near future!

Via Travel Codex, Alaska Airlines announced more details about the merger with Virgin America.  And it’s mostly good news!  For example, you can expect enhanced in-flight entertainment, updated cabins, and lots of Virgin America personality across all Alaska Airlines flights.

But they’ve confirmed the Virgin America brand will disappear in 2019.

Virgin America Points Will Convert to Alaska Airlines Miles at a 1:1.3 Ratio

There’s lots of Alaska Airlines news today!  I shared details of Alaska Airlines’ new award chart and the ending of their partnership with Delta.  This comes after last week’s closing of the deal to merge Alaska Airlines with Virgin America.

And now, via One Mile at a Time, we know that you’ll be able to convert Virgin America points to Alaska Airlines miles at a 1 : 1.3 ratio some time after January 9, 2017.

Lots of folks love earning and using Alaska Airlines miles, especially for flights on partners like American Airlines.  And if you already have a lot of Virgin America points, this is good news.

But some might consider transferring flexible points from AMEX Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou (until January 22, 2017), or Starwood to Virgin America.  And then transfer Virgin America points to Alaska Airlines at the 1 : 1.3 ratio.

Citi Removes Virgin America as a ThankYou Point Transfer Partner

Starting January 22, 2017, you’ll no longer be able to transfer Citi ThankYou points to Virgin America.

It makes sense that changes to how you earn Virgin America points are coming, now that the deal to merge Alaska Airlines and Virgin America has closed.  And in January 2017, they’ll begin the process of combining their frequent flyer programs.

It hasn’t yet been revealed how or when you’ll be able to transfer Virgin America points to Alaska Airlines miles.  Including the transfer ratio.
