Daraius’ Diary: The United Fiasco Shows We Need More Empathy & Compassion

Daraius:  We’ve got a great team at Million Mile Secrets helping with posts.  But I miss writing as much as I did in the old days!  So here I am writing about stuff that I really care about.  And which isn’t all miles-and-points related.

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
― Mother Teresa

I felt very angry when I first saw David Dao being dragged out of a United plane, with blood streaming down his face.  But below that anger, was sadness and disappointment.  My throat choked, my body slumped down in the chair, and my eyes wanted to stop watching the video.

Daraius Diary The United Fiasco Shows We Need More Empathy Compassion

I’m Inspired by Mother Theresa to Be More Loving & Peaceful

For the last two years, I’ve been learning about Non-Violent Communication and Empathy through the amazing Austin Empathy Sangha.  Why do I find it amazing?  Because for the first time, I actually learned and practiced how to communicate my feelings and needs in a way that included being aware of someone else’s feelings and needs too!

So while I am not responsible for other’s feelings and needs, I can be responsive to them.

Daraius’ Diary: Is There a “Bad” Painting?

Comparison is the thief of joy.  –  Theodore Roosevelt

A few weeks ago, the amazing Million Mile Secrets team were in town for our team meeting.  Every time we get together, we take part in at least ONE activity that is strange and unusual – and yet fun.

We’ve been to an Improv workshop and the Austin Panic Room.

This time, Emily signed us up for a painting class!

Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously.  And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Daraius’ Diary: You Can’t Vote “Wrong”

Daraius:  We’ve got a great team at Million Mile Secrets helping with posts.  But I miss writing as much as I did in the old days!  So here I am writing about stuff that I really care about (and which isn’t all miles-and-points related).

Left.  Or.  Right.

Republican.  Or.  Democrat.

Independent.  Or.  Spaghetti Monster. 🙂

There is no “wrong” choice, as long as you VOTE.

You Cant Vote Wrong

Left or Right – as Long as You Vote – There is no “Wrong” Candidate

Yeah, I suspect that many folks aren’t thrilled with the choice of candidates.  And that perhaps folks feel a sense of helplessness, disappointment, and disgust when they switch on the TV, or scroll through their Facebook feed or browse the internet.  So folks would rather not venture out to vote.

Daraius’ Diary: Pink for Short Term Financial Assistance

Daraius:  We’ve got a great team at Million Mile Secrets.  But I miss writing as much as I did in the old days!  So here I am writing about stuff that I really care about (and which isn’t all miles-and-points related).

More than 60% of bankruptcies are because of medical expenses.  I’ve listened to folks who are undergoing medical treatment, and I’ve seen the fear around paying off bills, in addition to the fear of dying.

The Pink Fund

The Pink Fund Allows Families Affected by Breast Cancer to Put Their Energy Towards Recovery by Reducing Their Bills

I’ve seen folks unable to work while undergoing treatment, which creates anxiety about surviving.  And one serious illness in a family may prevent others from working and earning a livelihood.  That’s because, often times, someone in the family has to drive to-and-fro the treatment facility, manage the home, and care for their loved one.

All of which makes it much harder to work traditional hours.  Sure, some employers are considerate and make accommodations.  But many don’t.  And this disrupts the lives of not only the patients, but their loved ones.

And that makes me sad, because I’d like to see everyone get the support and care they require.

Daraius’ Diary: Can I Accomplish Everything Without Hurrying?

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. – Lao Tzu

I was late for my yoga class, the parking lot was full, and I was on my phone as I walked hurriedly past this sign.

Can I Accomplish Everything Without Hurrying

Mother Nature Versus Father Time

I scoffed as I read it!

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always liked rushing.  I know what I want, and I’m going after it.  Why waste time, right?  If I don’t rush, how will things get done?

Not many accuse me of patience. 😉

Daraius’ Diary: Why I Kill

“The enemy is fear.  We think it is hate; but, it is fear” – Gandhi

I felt scared.  My thoughts raced to waking up dead, thousands of miles from home, after having a snooze in my bed.  My chest tightened.

I didn’t like feeling that way.

I glanced, fearfully, at the spider, with the red marking on its back, crawling on the roof of my 90 square foot cabin.

Daraius' Diary: Why I Kill

“Kill!” Was My Emotional Reaction Because I Saw Only a Threat to My Safety and Nothing Else

My instinctive response was to get rid of the source of my fear, the spider – even if it meant killing something, which had done nothing to harm me.

Any time a voice is talking to you that is not talking with love and compassion, DON’T BELIEVE IT.” – Cheri Huber

Over a year ago, while walking down the marina in San Diego, a friend turned to me and said, “I love you.  Say it!”

Wait.  What????!!!

Then I realized he wasn’t asking me to say that I loved him.  Just that I loved myself!

It felt so phony.  So fake, to say it out loud.  “Just the thing you’d do in California” I thought.  I might have even rolled my eyes!

Yet it was the hardest thing for me to do.

We’re Getting Divorced

To love and win is the best thing. To love and lose, the next best. – William Makepeace Thackeray

Daraius Dubash:  This is a blog post I never thought I’d write.  Emily and I are getting divorced in ~2 weeks.

I’ve blogged about asking Emily to marry me, when we got married, our honeymoon(s)!, and other trips together.  So, I wouldn’t feel very authentic if I didn’t share this news with y’all.

I never thought that the divorce statistics applied to me.  Those statistics were obviously for different folks.  I’ve always believed – and still do – that marriage is for life.

What can I say?  I’m a hopeless romantic (I hate the phrase “hopeless romantic,” but that’s another post!).  I got married firmly believing that there would be very tough times.  And whatever happened, I’d make it work.  So I’m sad that we’re getting divorced. Continue reading
