Daraius’ Diary: “Even a Mean Jerk Would Rescue a Child”

Daraius:  We’ve got a great team at Million Mile Secrets helping with posts.  But I miss writing as much as I did in the old days!  So here I am writing about stuff that I really care about.  And which isn’t all miles-and-points related.

Know that everyone has a sense of basic humanity – even the person acting like a complete jerk right now would probably rescue a child in danger. – Dr. Stosny

Daraius Diary Even A Mean Jerk Would Rescue A Child

I See Someone With Different Political Opinions as Just Someone With Different Political Opinions.

I’ve read Dr. Stosny’s books and attended his workshop on how to turn anger and resentment into compassion.  I’m always inspired by his message that valuing someone or something leads to much more  contentment than blaming or being angry about someone or something.

Daraius’ Diary: “Seeing God in Everyone & Everything”

What would it be like to see God in everyone and in everything? – Adyashanti

Last week, I spent 7 days at a silent retreat with Adyashanti (meaning: primordial peace) at Lake Tahoe.  This was a very different kind of experience than my Vipassana experience.  But it was every bit as profound and deep!

Daraius’ Diary: “Be Like the Sky”

Be like the sky.  The sky is always the sky, whether there are clouds or no clouds.  – Mooji

Meditating shows me that it is possible to observe thoughts and emotions without trying to grab onto them.

Of course, it is very hard to do continuously.  And especially when I’m triggered, and I’m in emotionally charged situations.

Daraius’ Diary: “Why Can’t I Be Kind to Myself?”

Daraius:  We’ve got a great team at Million Mile Secrets helping with posts.  But I miss writing as much as I did in the old days!  So here I am writing about stuff that I really care about.  And which isn’t all miles-and-points related.

Compassion isn’t some kind of self-improvement project or ideal that we’re trying to live up to. Having compassion starts and ends with having compassion for all those unwanted parts of ourselves, all those imperfections that we don’t even want to look at.” – Pema Chodron

I can be pretty mean and vicious.  And petty.  Not to mention critical and demanding.  I don’t do this to others, but to myself.

So a few weeks ago, I attended a Self-Compassion intensive workshop by Kristin Neff and Chris Germer in Sedona, Arizona.

I find it hard to be kind to myself, even though folks tell me that I am kind to them.  In fact, up to a few years ago, I didn’t even realize that I could be kind to myself!  I couldn’t understand what “self-compassion” could possibly be referring to!

It turns out that many folks find it easier to be kind to others than to themselves.

Daraius’ Diary: The United Fiasco Shows We Need More Empathy & Compassion

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
― Mother Teresa

I felt very angry when I first saw David Dao being dragged out of a United plane, with blood streaming down his face.  But below that anger, was sadness and disappointment.  My throat choked, my body slumped down in the chair, and my eyes wanted to stop watching the video.

Daraius Diary The United Fiasco Shows We Need More Empathy Compassion

I’m Inspired by Mother Theresa to Be More Loving & Peaceful

For the last two years, I’ve been learning about Non-Violent Communication and Empathy through the amazing Austin Empathy Sangha.  Why do I find it amazing?  Because for the first time, I actually learned and practiced how to communicate my feelings and needs in a way that included being aware of someone else’s feelings and needs too!

So while I am not responsible for other’s feelings and needs, I can be responsive to them.

Daraius’ Diary: Is There a “Bad” Painting?

Comparison is the thief of joy.  –  Theodore Roosevelt

A few weeks ago, the amazing Million Mile Secrets team were in town for our team meeting.  Every time we get together, we take part in at least ONE activity that is strange and unusual – and yet fun.

We’ve been to an Improv workshop and the Austin Panic Room.

This time, Emily signed us up for a painting class!

Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously.  And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Daraius’ Diary: You Can’t Vote “Wrong”

Left.  Or.  Right.

Republican.  Or.  Democrat.

Independent.  Or.  Spaghetti Monster. 🙂

There is no “wrong” choice, as long as you VOTE.

You Cant Vote Wrong

Left or Right – as Long as You Vote – There is no “Wrong” Candidate

Yeah, I suspect that many folks aren’t thrilled with the choice of candidates.  And that perhaps folks feel a sense of helplessness, disappointment, and disgust when they switch on the TV, or scroll through their Facebook feed or browse the internet.  So folks would rather not venture out to vote.

Daraius’ Diary: Pink for Short Term Financial Assistance

More than 60% of bankruptcies are because of medical expenses.  I’ve listened to folks who are undergoing medical treatment, and I’ve seen the fear around paying off bills, in addition to the fear of dying.

The Pink Fund

The Pink Fund Allows Families Affected by Breast Cancer to Put Their Energy Towards Recovery by Reducing Their Bills

I’ve seen folks unable to work while undergoing treatment, which creates anxiety about surviving.  And one serious illness in a family may prevent others from working and earning a livelihood.  That’s because, often times, someone in the family has to drive to-and-fro the treatment facility, manage the home, and care for their loved one.

All of which makes it much harder to work traditional hours.  Sure, some employers are considerate and make accommodations.  But many don’t.  And this disrupts the lives of not only the patients, but their loved ones.

And that makes me sad, because I’d like to see everyone get the support and care they require.

Daraius’ Diary: Can I Accomplish Everything Without Hurrying?

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished. – Lao Tzu

I was late for my yoga class, the parking lot was full, and I was on my phone as I walked hurriedly past this sign.

Can I Accomplish Everything Without Hurrying

Mother Nature Versus Father Time

I scoffed as I read it!

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always liked rushing.  I know what I want, and I’m going after it.  Why waste time, right?  If I don’t rush, how will things get done?

Not many accuse me of patience. 😉
