TSA PreCheck is a great way to save time at the airport.  And via Running with Miles, there are 7 new airlines participating in TSA PreCheck.  Including popular airlines like Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, COPA Airlines, and more!

Are Small Cameras Allowed Onboard Flights Impacted by the Electronics Ban?

Million Mile Secrets reader, Matt, commented:

With the electronics ban on certain flights to the US, do you know if you can bring a small point-and-shoot camera or GoPro in your carry-on luggage?

Great question, Matt.  Passengers and airlines are still adjusting to the electronics ban.

But according to the Department of Homeland Security, the guideline for restricted carry-on items says the electronic device must be larger than a typical smartphone.

While you should be able bring a small GoPro in your carry-on luggage, you might have to check a larger camera depending on the size.

Flight Electronics Ban Cameras

If You’re Traveling on a Route Affected by the Electronics Ban, You Can NOT Bring a Camera on Board That’s Larger Than a Smartphone. But You Should be Able to Bring a Small GoPro

Keep in mind, it’s up to the airlines and airport security to interpret and enforce the electronics ban rules.  So they have the final say about which items you can bring onboard.

I’ll explain what some airlines are doing to help passengers avoid putting expensive electronics equipment in their checked luggage.

Save Miles on Award Flights to South Africa Using AMEX & Starwood Points

Million Mile Secrets reader Aaron asked:

I have been looking to take the family to South Africa.  It appears ANA has the best mileage, but taxes and fees are terrible.  Do you have any thoughts?

Aaron is mostly correct.  ANA Mileage Club can save you tens of thousands of miles for flights to South Africa.  But it also adds fuel surcharges to most of its partners.

If you collect AMEX Membership Rewards or Starwood points, you can transfer them to ANA to book award flights.  Or move Marriott points to Starwood and then to ANA.

Using airline miles on award flights to South Africa is a great idea, because paid flights are expensive and rarely discounted.  But fuel surcharges can be very high.

ANA stopped collecting fuel surcharges on most of its own flights in Spring 2016, but it keeps adding them to most of its partners.

Electronics Ban on Flights to US From 10 Cities – What You Need to Know

Update:   The UK will also ban electronics in the cabin from certain destinations.

Heads up!  If you’re flying to the US from certain cities in the Middle East and North Africa, be prepared to check all large electronics, including laptops, tablets, cameras, and Kindles.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the new policy must be implemented in the next 96 hours, and affects 9 airlines operating to the US from 10 international airports.  And the ban is indefinite.

This will be very inconvenient for folks who like to get work done, read e-books, or watch movies on their devices in-flight.  Only cell phones, smartphones, and necessary medical equipment will be allowed in the cabin.
