Blog Giveaway 200 American Airlines Gift Card

You Can Book a Basic Economy Fare Between Philadelphia and Sunny Miami

I’ll show you how to enter!

American Airlines is now selling “Basic Economy” tickets along 10 US routes for travel beginning March 1, 2017.

Basic Economy fares are extra cheap tickets that are extremely restrictive.  It is NOT a good deal for most folks.  Here’s what you can expect with a Basic Economy fare:

  • You can NOT choose your own seat
  • You can NOT upgrade your seat (even if you have elite status)
  • You can NOT take a carry-on bag – only 1 personal item that must fit under the seat
  • You must board with the last boarding group
  • Your ticket is NOT refundable or changeable, even for a fee
  • You will only get half elite qualifying miles and segments (but full redeemable miles and elite qualifying dollars)

However, if you have an American Airlines co-branded credit card, like the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select (and aren’t concerned about elite status), these fares aren’t as bad.  That’s because:

  • You WILL be allowed a carry-on item
  • You will NOT need to board with the last boarding group

If you enter this contest, you could win a $200 American Airlines gift card!  And hopefully stay out of Basic Economy!

  1. It doesn’t affect me as much because I have the card.

  2. Kwaku Ofori-Darko

I am not a fan of American’s Basic Economy Fares. In trying to compete with low-cost carriers, full service carriers like American are devaluing their own products.

  3. Not a fan, for sure! Delta’s version of Basic Economy fares is somewhat better.

  4. I think Basic Economy will damage American’s reputation.

  5. I feel like American Airlines should focus on creating a better customer experience, even if it’s through small perks like wifi or in-flight entertainment. By stripping out things, it feels like they are competing with Southwest, except that they offer much more value and customer service.

  6. Too many restrictions to save $20

  7. I think it may be beneficial it just really depends on whether the fares are really discounted and how they compare to there carriers like Spirit.

  8. Aa.. program is going downhill?

  9. Glad to learn that having a co-branded card offers some benefits.

  10. I am not a fan of the American Airlines Basic Economy fare.

  11. Gotta wait and see
