Via One Mile at a Time, British Airways is kicking off the New Year with a promotion.
You’ll earn points on British Airways, plus on American Airlines, Finnair, and Iberia trans-Atlantic flights, when you credit flights to your British Airways account. And paid tickets in any class of service, like coach, Business, or First Class, qualify.
Let’s take a look at the details of this promotion!
British Airways’ 3X Promotion
The promotion is valid for paid flights (not award flights) on British Airways and trans-Atlantic flights on partner airlines American Airlines, Finnair, and Iberia. But you must register, and it’s only good for the first 8 segments flown during the promotional period.
Note: You’ll earn 3X British Airways Avios points on flights in the UK, Ireland, and US starting January 5, 2017. In all other regions, you’ll earn 3X British Airways Avios points starting today, January 3, 2017.
The bonus British Airways Avios points will appear in your account within 48 hours of the qualifying flight.
Is It Worth It?
This deal is a no-brainer if you have a paid flight with British Airways coming up. Or a flight on one of the participating partner airlines, like American Airlines, between the US and Europe.
This chart shows how many British Airways Avios points you’d normally earn for flights, depending on what type of ticket you buy:
With this promotion, you could earn up to 900% of miles flown (300% X 3) if you’re flying First Class. And a coach ticket could earn you up to 300% of miles flown (100% X 3).
But the cheapest coach fares will only earn you 75% of miles flown (25% X 3). So be sure to check which fare class your ticket is in before you fly!
For example, you’ll fly ~7,906 miles on a round-trip flight between Chicago and London. If you had a round-trip coach ticket between these 2 cities, you’d earn up to ~23,718 British Airways Avios points (7,906 X 3) with this promotion.
That’s enough for 3 free one-way short-haul flights under 1,150 miles within the US, that cost 7,500 British Airways Avios points. Or more than enough for a one-way award ticket from the West Coast to Hawaii, which costs 12,500 British Airways Avios points.
So I’d suggest signing-up even if you don’t have a particular trip planned, because it only takes a few minutes.
And don’t forget, you can save up to $400 on round-trip British Airways flights with the AARP discount through January 31, 2017. Plus you’ll get an extra 10% off your British Airways flight if you have the British Airways Visa Signature® Card.
Using British Airways Avios Points
With British Airways Avios points, you can book award flights at great prices including:
- Short domestic flights on partners American Airlines and Alaska Airlines
- Short flights within Europe
- Flights from the West Coast to Hawaii
- Flights to Germany (Berlin, Dusseldorf) on partner Air Berlin
- Flights to Ireland on partner Aer Lingus
- Flying Cathay Pacific Business Class or First Class from New York (JFK) to Vancouver
Because British Airways has a distance-based award chart, the amount you’ll pay depends on the length of your flight.
