If you have lots of credit cards from the major US banks, these new offers from Banco Popular might interest you!

Via Travel Codex, Banco Popular has released the Avianca Vuela Card, with a sign-up bonus of 60,000 Avianca miles after using promotion code “AVSPWE” and making a purchase in the first 90 days of opening your account.  The annual fee is $149.

You can also apply for the Avianca Vida Card.  It comes with a lower sign-up bonus of 20,000 Avianca miles.  But the $59 annual fee is lower too!  It doesn’t look like you can use a promo code with the Avianca Vida Card to increase the sign-up bonus.

Emily and I don’t earn a commission on these cards, but we’ll always tell you about the best deals we find!

Banco Popular is now offering 2 new Avianca Airlines credit cards.  Let’s take a look!

1.   Avianca Vuela Credit Card

Link:   Banco Popular Avianca Vuela

The Banco Popular Avianca Vuela comes with a sign-up bonus of 40,000 Avianca miles after you make a purchase within the first 90 days of opening your account.  But if you use promotion code “AVSPWE” on your application under “financial information“, you will receive 60,000 Avianca miles!

Note:   The landing page does NOT mention the 60,000 mile promotion.  So I can’t guarantee you’ll receive the higher bonus.

This card also comes with:

  • 3 Avianca miles per $1 spent on Avianca purchases
  • 2 Avianca miles per $1 at gas stations and grocery stores
  • 1 Avianca mile per $1 on all other purchases
  • 15% discount when you buy Avianca miles
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $149 annual fee, NOT waived the first year

Another perk of the card is a 50% discount on a round-trip award ticket between the US and Central America or Colombia after spending $12,000 each year.  And another 50% discount after spending an additional $12,000.

Note:   You can only use the discount with coach award seats.

The benefits of the Avianca Vida Card are not nearly as good as the Avianca Vuela.  But the annual fee is much less, too!

You’ll earn 20,000 Avianca miles after you make your first purchase within the first 90 days of opening your account.

  • 2 Avianca miles per $1 spent on Avianca purchases
  • 1 Avianca mile per $1 spent on everything else
  • 15% discount when you buy Avianca miles
  • $59 annual fee, NOT waived the first year

According to data points on Reddit, and the original email offer, it looks like the promotion code will NOT work if you apply for the Avianca Vida card.  According to the offer:

20,000 Avianca Miles Is Still Enough for a One-Way Ticket to the Caribbean!

Note:   If you’re new to miles & points, this is NOT a good card to start out with.  That’s because banks like Chase, Citi, and American Express have stricter credit card application rules.  So it’s a good idea to apply for their cards first!

What Can You Do With Avianca Miles?

Avianca miles are very useful for traveling south of the US.  With a sign-up bonus of 60,000 Avianca miles, you’ll have enough Avianca miles to for a round-trip award ticket to Brazil.  Or all the way to Chile!

You can use your Avianca miles for flights on Star Alliance partners, like United Airlines and Air Canada.  And sometimes it will even cost fewer miles!  For example:

  • New York to London one-way in Business Class for 63,000 Avianca miles (7,000 miles less than United Airlines charges on partner airlines)
  • Toronto to China in First Class one-way for 90,000 Avianca miles (15,000 miles less than Air Canada charges)

Plus, Avianca does not pass along fuel surcharges!

  1. I cannot find Maryland in the state drop down in the Application?

  2. Can you get the bonus from both credit cards?

  3. Ghina: there is a note next to the state menu indicating that they are not issuing cards in Maryland. Guess us Marylanders are out of luck! How bizarre.

  4. Where do you put the promo code? I don’t see a box on the application

  5. DC is also not on the state drop-down list.

  6. Wow Marylanders have all the luck! I didn’t see that note in my cell, thanks for pointing it out.

  7. Thanks. Signed up and got immediate approval. With all my credit cards, I don’t often get immediate approval anymore, despite a credit score over 800. Even if I only get 40,000 miles (though I did use the promo code), it’s a very good deal.

  8. Any idea regarding the churn possibilities of Banco?

  9. Having a nightmarish experience in applying for their card. I have a score of 750 (transunion) and when I applied ,their system gave error that it is unable to authenticate me.Called customer care to fix any issues with my application and specifically mentioned that I do not want another application but wanted them fix the existing one …however the CSP submitted new application and resubmitted twice and each time got same error message. I have now uploaded documents (like my W2, Paystub,Bank Statement) to get myself verified but they won’t help without another application. I now have 3 credit pulls in 2 days and not sure what to do. (I have 16 cards and 3 checking accounts and history of close to 5 years)

Ugh, I’m going through a similar nightmare, probably because I screwed up on the “Income” question. I normally list “household” income (mine + my husband’s), and have never been asked for documentation of either. But they asked for employment information, and (I assume) when they checked they saw that my income alone was different from what I’d listed on the app.

I applied on 12/29, and the application was declined on 12/30 due to “income” issues. However, there was an option to “Resubmit,” so I did that, along with an explanation and extra documentation regarding sources of income. That got me a “conditional approval,” as long as I submitted still more documentation of my husband’s income (pensions/Social Security), which I did. Last time I checked, it was still in the “conditional approval” stage :-/ I had originally requested that they just consider the application using my income alone, which still should have been enough to get the card, but apparently they’re not doing that … sigh …

Had I known there would be this much scrutiny, I’d have listed only my income to begin with … but since I’ve never had to jump through so many application hoops before, I had no idea this would happen.

      • Same here, Eileen. Sorry to hear, but good to know I am not the only one with a terrible experience with this application process. I work hourly so my income is variable and I usually just list a general annual income based on working 2000 hours in a year as I cannot predict my exact annual income to the letter of the law. Bad idea. Banco Popular wanted employment verification, tax returns, and pay stubs. The issue is my pay checks fluctuate due to the hourly nature, so I couldn’t match things up to my estimate, and when I tried to explain this to the call center agents it was futile.

If your income is a cut and dry salary, you should have no issues. But like my example, Eileen’s above, etc. – if you have anything their system cannot understand it will get flagged, even if you are not lying and trying to pull a fast one.

I have 810 TU, 801 EQ, 790 EX – they pulled EQ. Never been denied other than this, 8+ new cards in the last year including CSR, CSP, Citi AA, Barclays AA.

  11. I also received immediate approval. Thanks so much for the info! 🙂

  12. Immediate approval for both my wife and myself. Excellent credit scores but many existing cards, so glad to find a new option. Their system is quite slow–so be patient–and before approving both apps, they asked a few security questions on-line (previous address, mortgage bank, etc.).

Daraius and Emily–as always, we greatly appreciate the advice and guidance!
