I have had the Barclaycard Arrival Plus before. I closed it early last year.
I’m considering applying for it again, but the terms say the bonus offer is valid for first-time cardmembers with new accounts only. Existing cardmembers and existing accounts are not eligible for this offer. Does that mean I will not be able to get the 50,000 points since I had the card before?
Great question, Amber!
In practice, you can earn the bonus that comes with the Barclaycard Arrival Plus more than once. But the terms and conditions definitely give Barclaycard the right to not give you the bonus!
I’ll tell you what we know about being approved for the Barclaycard Arrival Plus bonus more than once.
Can You Get the Barclaycard Welcome Bonus More Than Once?
Link: Barclaycard Arrival Plus
Now is a great time to sign-up for the Barclaycard Arrival Plus! That’s because the card is currently offering an increased sign-up bonus of 50,000 Barclaycard Arrival miles after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account. That’s worth ~$525 toward travel!
That’s 10,000 more Arrival miles than the normal sign-up bonus. And the $89 annual fee is waived the first year. So this is a good deal!
So what if you’d like to take advantage of this bonus, but you’ve had the card before?
Cancel Your Current Barclaycard to Increase Your Chances for Earning a 2nd Welcome Bonus
This one-time 50,000 miles bonus offer is valid for first-time Cardmembers with new accounts only. Existing Cardmembers and existing accounts are not eligible for this offer. This is a limited time offer and may be cancelled at any time without notice.
Barclaycard has had this language in their terms & conditions for a while now, but folks on Reddit report continuing to receive the sign-up bonus more than once. Other folks report the same.
Even Doctor of Credit confirms you can get the bonus again. I called Barclaycard about a month ago, and a couple representatives told me I could sign-up for the card again and get the bonus. But I’d have to close my current card.
It looks like as long as Barclaycard knows you don’t have a current Arrival Plus card open, they’ll approve you for another card.
Downgrading Does NOT Work
I have not seen any reports of Barclaycard approving folks for another Barclaycard Arrival Plus after downgrading their card to a Barclaycard Arrival. That’s because Barclaycard considers the Barclaycard Arrival and Barclaycard Arrival Plus the same product.
Nothing Is Guaranteed!
In practice, you can get the bonus again. But if you do not receive the bonus, there isn’t much you can do to argue with Barclaycard. Because their terms & conditions make it sound like you can’t. You can always send a secure message to Barclaycard and ask if your new card is eligible for the welcome offer. But of course, you’ll have to take the risk and open a new card account.
There are things you can do to increase your chances of being approved for another Barclaycard, like waiting 6 months between applications, and using your current Barclaycard credit cards for lots of spending.
But nothing is guaranteed, no matter what you do. The one thing that folks consistently report is that you have to close your current Barclaycard Arrival card in order to be approved for another one!
And remember, Barclaycard has become very strict about the number of cards they’ll approve you for. Most folks report only getting approved for 1 or 2 cards per year!
I have kept my Arrival+ Open because I like that it is the closest thing to a real Chip & PIN card which I can use in Europe!
Folks are concerned about the language they see in the Barclaycard Arrival Plus terms & conditions. It states the sign-up bonus offer is valid only for first-time cardmembers.
However, that language has been in the terms & conditions for a while. And folks still report earning the sign-up bonus after being approved for a second card.
Have you been approved for a second sign-up bonus from Barclaycard?
