Via Doctor of Credit, it’s possible AMEX will add new perks to the AMEX Platinum cards in early 2017.

This follows recent positive changes, like a new 5X bonus category on certain airfare purchases!

It makes sense that AMEX is stepping up their game after the overwhelming demand for the Chase Sapphire Reserve.  And more competition is great news for folks in the miles & points world!

How About a New AMEX Platinum Bonus Category for Dining Purchases? That Would be Fantastic!

Let’s look at what other changes could be made!

Potential AMEX Platinum Changes

The AMEX Platinum, AMEX Mercedes-Benz Platinum, and AMEX Business Platinum are premium cards that earn transferable AMEX Membership Rewards points, which are fantastic for Big Travel!

And recent changes have made these cards better, like 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points on airfare purchased directly from airlines or from American Express Travel with the AMEX Platinum card.

And 1.5X AMEX Membership Rewards points on purchases of $5,000+ with the AMEX Business Platinum.

But these cards could still use more perks to compete with Chase cards, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

My Wish List for the AMEX Platinum

I think it would be great to add a new bonus spending category.  AMEX already offers bonus categories on other cards like the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express.

Currently, AMEX Platinum cardholders get access to airport lounges (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, and American Express Centurion Lounges).  But it costs $27 for guest access to Priority Pass lounges.  AMEX could make this perk similar to the Sapphire Reserve and remove the guest fee.

Note:  AMEX has listened to all of us!  As part of the American Express Platinum refresh, at any visit to a Priority Pass Select lounge, you may bring in 2 guests for no charge!  Though you will be charged $27 for any additional guests.

Lastly, the AMEX Platinum cards come with $200 in statement credits per calendar year for airline incidentals with your selected airline (luggage fees, in-flight food & drink, etc.).  It would be fantastic if AMEX expanded this benefit so you were not limited to airline incidentals.  Or if it applied to any travel purchase like the Sapphire Reserve.

Bottom Line

There are rumors of more positive changes coming to AMEX Platinum cards in early 2017.

AMEX has been coming on strong with improvements to their cards.  So it makes sense that they may add new card benefits.

What new perks would you like to see?
