Want more American Airlines miles for an upcoming trip?
Through October 31, 2016, you can earn up to 42,500 bonus miles when you buy (or gift!) American Airlines miles.
Plus, you’ll get 10% off the cost of the miles if you complete your purchase by October 3, 2016.
I’ll explain the details of this offer. And help you decide whether it make sense for you.
Purchase American Airlines Miles for Less
You can get up to 42,500 bonus American Airlines miles when you buy or gift American Airlines miles through October 31, 2016.
You’ll also save 10% when you complete your purchase by October 3, 2016.
To qualify for the bonus miles, you must purchase a minimum of 20,000 American Airlines miles. And the more miles you buy, the bigger the bonus. But you can only purchase a maximum of 150,000 miles per year.
Here’s how many bonus miles you can earn:
- Buy 20,000 to 39,000 American Airlines miles – Get 7,000 bonus American Airlines Miles
- Buy 40,000 to 59,000 American Airlines miles – Get 15,000 bonus American Airlines Miles
- Buy 60,000 to 74,000 American Airlines miles – Get 22,500 bonus American Airlines Miles
- Buy 75,000 to 99,000 American Airlines miles – Get 30,000 bonus American Airlines Miles
- Buy 100,000 to 150,000 American Airlines miles – Get 42,500 bonus American Airlines Miles
Is This a Good Deal?
This might make sense for some folks, especially if you need to top off your American Airlines mileage account for a specific trip.
Or if buying enough miles for an award ticket costs less than the cash price of a ticket.
For example, a round-trip Business Class ticket from the US to India costs 140,000 American Airlines miles. And I found a Business Class award ticket leaving New York (JFK) on November 13, 2016, and returning from Delhi, India, on November 23, 2016.
That same ticket would cost ~$5,439 if you paid with cash.
But instead, you could buy 100,000 American Airlines miles for $2,884 (with the 10% discount + taxes and fees) and get 42,500 bonus American Airlines miles. For a total of 142,500 American Airlines miles (100,000 + 42,500), more than enough for your Business Class ticket to India.
And you’d save ~$2,555 ($5,439 – $2,884)!
That’s a huge savings. But as always, do the math to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Because it likely isn’t as good of a deal if the cash price of the ticket you’re trying to buy is only a few hundred dollars.
Buying American Airlines Miles Counts as Airfare
If you do decide to buy miles, don’t forget to use a credit card that earns bonus miles for airfare purchases, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Preferred, or AMEX Premier Rewards Gold. Because American Airlines processes points purchases directly, NOT through a 3rd party like points.com. So buying points should count as an airfare purchase!
And if you use a card like the Barclaycard Arrival Plus, you could even use your Barclaycard Arrival miles to offset the cost of the points you buy. 😉
More Ways to Earn American Airlines Miles
If you want more American Airlines miles for a trip, you could also consider a card like the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select MasterCard.
With this card, you’ll earn 50,000 American Airlines miles after making $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of opening your account. And the $95 annual fee is waived the first year.
You can read my review of the card here.
