My mom and sister wanted to visit me for my birthday. My mom was flying from India and my sister was visiting from Australia, so what better place to meet (for them!) than in NYC!
I always enjoy visiting New York City, and had a few work meetings, so I was thrilled that I could combine work and family time. I was able to take in a Broadway show, try new foods, and see historic landmarks, like the Brooklyn Bridge and Rockefeller Center.
Some travelers prefer to stay away from touristy destinations like Manhattan, but I had a blast. Perhaps because it was my first time being a tourist in NYC! New York City is filled with an energy unique to anywhere else I’ve been.
That said, I now want to discover Queens and eat in every ethnic restaurant there! 🙂

Part 2 – Review of 4 Veggie Restaurants
A big part of travel is saturating myself in the local culture. If I return home without tasting new food, I don’t feel satisfied with the trip.
New York City is an enormous melting pot, where every culture seems to be represented! I was able to try lots of foods, including Chinese, Korean, Indian, and Israeli. I’ll tell you about my 4 favorites.
I’ve recently decided to eat vegetarian food, so
my family and I were on the lookout for accommodating restaurants.
Because we were doing the obligatory Chinatown trip, I searched online for a vegetarian Chinese restaurant and found Buddha Bodai. Walking down Mott Street in Chinatown, we stopped at Buddha Bodai, a Chinese vegetarian restaurant.
We ordered some tea, turnip cake, and various dim sum dishes, including delicious veggie dumplings and meat substitutes! The prices were very reasonable, with dim sum costing ~$3 to ~$5.
My mom and sister didn’t care for the food, but I did! It certainly was a “safe” place because everything on the menu was vegetarian.
On my birthday, my mom and sister asked me where I wanted to go. On East 32nd Street between Madison and 5th Avenue lies Hangawi. Hangawi is a Korean vegetarian restaurant that puts a lot of emphasis on tasty food.
At Hangawi, you take your shoes off at the door, and you sit on pillows on a raised floor.
It brought me back to my revitalizing Vipassana meditation experience. I had spent days and days sitting on cushions on the floor, so this was easy! Well I was hungry, so I kept twitching until the food was served.
We ordered 5 different dishes, and shared everything. Entrees here cost ~$20 to ~$30, so we splurged a little!
My family is almost as enthusiastic as I am about spicy food. We mostly ordered items with the “warning: spicy” asterisk.
I quite enjoyed the food at Hangawi and was glad to find that I didn’t have to give up Korean food because of my vegetarian diet.
On East 53rd Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenue, I took my mom & sister Kati Roll, an Indian fast food restaurant.
I expected a lot of nitpicking and judgmental facial contortions from my Indian family. But it actually turned out to be really tasty!
Because the Indian food at Kati Roll passed the Indian mom test, it deserves a mention!
I love Kathi rolls, and the average cost was $5 to $7 for a roll, which is very reasonable by Manhattan standards.
I really like chickpeas, and they’re a great source of protein in my vegetarian diet. So I loaded up on falafel and hummus!
Next time, I’m looking forward to visiting Queens and unearthing more of New York City’s unassuming gems!
