My Southwest Companion Pass expires in December 2016.  You mentioned you can transfer Marriott points to Southwest for no fee and use them to get the Companion Pass.  If I have 110,000 Marriott points, could I save them until January 2017 and transfer to Southwest to get the Companion Pass again?

Thanks for the question, Heather!

You CAN transfer Marriott points to Southwest, which count toward the Southwest Companion Pass.

I consider it the top deal in domestic travel.  So I can see why Heather is trying to get it again!

I’ll explain how you can use Marriott points to earn the Companion Pass!

About Marriott Hotel + Air Packages

Heather could transfer Marriott points directly to Southwest to earn the Companion Pass.  But the transfer ratio isn’t good.  Unfortunately, it’s NOT a 1:1 ratio!  You’d need to transfer 290,000 Marriott points to get the 110,000 Southwest points needed for the Companion Pass.

Instead, I recommend redeeming Marriott points for a Southwest Hotel + Air package.  You’ll need to redeem a minimum of 235,000 Marriott points to get enough Southwest points to earn the Companion Pass.  And you’ll get to enjoy a longer stay at a Marriott hotel!

5-Night Hotel + Air Packages

I’ve written about Marriott’s 5-night Hotel + Air Packages and 7-night Hotel + Air Packages.

The 5-night packages are not advertised on Marriott’s website and have typically been reserved for Marriott Vacation Club owners.

If You Have Elite Status With Marriott, You Could Ask to Redeem Marriott Points for a 5-Night Hotel + Air Package

To book, call Marriott reservations at 888-236-2427.  And ask specifically for a 5-night package.  I haven’t tried it myself, but some folks with Marriott elite status have had success booking 5-night packages.

Here’s how much they cost:

Marriott Hotel Category5 Nights + 50,000 Miles or Points5 Nights + 70,000 Miles or Points5 Nights + 100,000 Miles or Points5 Nights + 120,000 Miles or Points

Category 9275,000 Marriott Points295,000 Marriott Points325,000 Marriott Points345,000 Marriott Points

The benefit of booking a 5-night package is you’ll pay fewer points.

For example, you can pay 235,000 Marriott points for a 5-night stay at a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel.  And, you’ll get 120,000 Southwest points, which is more than enough to earn the Companion Pass.

7-Night Hotel + Air Packages

If you’re not able to book a 5-night package, you could use more points for a 7-night Hotel + Air Package.

Marriott’s Southwest Hotel + Air 7-Night Packages Can Earn You a Southwest Companion Pass!

You can pay 250,000 Marriott points for a 7-night stay at a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel, like the Category 5 Fairfield Inn & Suites San Diego Carlsbad.

With this package, you’ll get 100,000 Southwest points that count toward the Companion Pass.  And there are many ways to earn the extra 10,000 points needed to get the Companion Pass.

Book a 7-Night Hotel + Air Package at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Using 250,000 Marriott Points and You’ll Earn 100,000 Qualifying Southwest Companion Pass Points

Remember, you don’t have to book a hotel stay right away!  Marriott will send you a certificate for a 5 or 7-night stay (valid for 1 year from the date of issue).  Plus the Southwest points, which you can use for any Southwest flight.

You’ll usually get the airline points within a few days of booking the package.

A Friend or Family Member Can Transfer Marriott Points to You If You Don’t Have Enough for a Hotel + Air Package

Or consider one of the offers on the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier personal and small business cards.

With the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier personal card, you’ll earn 80,000 Marriott points after spending $3,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of account opening.

And earn an extra 7,500 Marriott points when you add an authorized user who makes a purchase in the 1st 3 months of account opening.  The $85 annual fee is NOT waived the 1st year.

With the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier small business card, you can earn 80,000 Marriott points when you spend $3,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.  The $99 annual fee is NOT waived the 1st year.

There are many ways to qualify for a small business card.  As long as you’re looking to earn a profit with your small business, it’s worth applying.

Just remember, Chase now has stricter approval rules.  So if you’ve opened ~5 or more credit cards from any bank (excluding certain business cards) in the past 24 months, it’s unlikely you’ll be approved for most Chase cards.

Or Have It Both Ways!

If you don’t have enough Marriott points to book a Hotel + Air package to get the 110,000 Southwest Points, consider getting a Southwest credit card to make up the difference.

For example, you can pay 200,000 Marriott points for a 7-night stay at a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel.  You’ll get 50,000 Southwest points that DO count toward the Companion Pass.

Then, get 1 of the 3 Chase Southwest cards, which are all offering 50,000 point sign-up bonuses after meeting minimum spending requirements.

With the minimum spending and sign-up offer from the Southwest card, you’ll need just 8,000 Southwest points to earn the Companion Pass.

Bottom Line

You can redeem Marriott points for a Hotel + Air Package to earn the Southwest Companion Pass.  You’ll get a 5 or 7-night stay at a Marriott Category 1 through 5 hotel.  Plus Southwest points that you can use for any Southwest flight.

If you want more Marriott points, you can apply for the  Chase Marriott Rewards Premier personal or small business card.  Both offer 80,000 Marriott points after meeting minimum spending requirements.

Or you can combine less expensive Hotel + Air packages with a 50,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus from 1 of the 3 Southwest credit cards.

Have you used Marriott points to earn a Companion Pass?

  1. So I am wondering with the new chase card if I will be able to transfer my rewards points into what will be the new account. I would like to take advantage of the 50% bonus on points. Any info?

  2. As a Marriott owner I get upset when you suggest there might be a way for non owners to get the 5 night packages. This, indeed, is an owner only perk. Please stop telling people to contact Marriott to request this when they don’t qualify.

If you want to mention this in the context of “for owners” this award is available, I have no objection.

  3. Can you transfer ultimate rewards points to Marriott?

  4. If you transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to boost your Marriott balance, will those new Marriott points be eligible to be redeemed for a 5 night or 7 night package + SWA miles, or are those points “marked” within your Marriott account for redemption only with normal Marriott hotels bookings?

  5. @Leslie – I’ll be sure to post more info about the new Chase card as soon as it’s available.

@Andrea D – Yes! You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott at a 1:1 ratio. http://millionmilesecrets.com/2014/05/15/ultimate-rewards-transfer-partners/

@Chris – The Chase Ultimate Rewards points you transfer to Marriott can be used for a Hotel + Air Package.

  6. The hotel plus air package from Marriott for a 7-night stay in a Cat 1-5 hotel plus 120,000 Southwest points (enough for a companion pass) is one of the best travel deals going. I just hope it doesn’t disappear when the Starwood/Marriott merger is fully implemented.

  7. Yeah the 5 day have been widely reported on FT as no-go unless you are owner, they won’t let you book it.
The 250k point example is wrong…normal cat 1-5 award is 150k and with 120k SW points the package is 270K for a 7 night hotel and 120K…this is the best and easiest way to get the companion pass, since you can combine Marriott points with a spouse to get the package, SW points transfer within 3 days (only took one for us recently) companion pass eligibility is instantly acknowledged online and you can add your companion from the website now. The hotel cert for 7 days is good for a year and can be extended as needed, you are also allowed to add points and upgrade it if you want a higher category hotel when you are ready to book.

  8. @Wise2u – You can spend 250,000 Marriott points to get a 7-night stay in a category 1 to 5 hotel and 100,000 Southwest points (so you’d have to make up another 10,000 Southwest points for the Companion Pass). Or spend 270,000 Marriott points for a 7-night stay and 120,000 Southwest points.

  9. I currently have the companion but expires in Dec2016. I applied for one Southwest card and have enough Marriot points for a 5 or 7 night package to total. I only need 45000 points more towards the companion. What is the time to buy the Marriott package to get the companion for two years instead of one? Is it now, on December or January?

  10. @Louloubelle
You should get the points in January, because you need to have 110k points in one calendar year.

  11. I just made this transfer now as we have no idea if/when this will end or if the rules will change.

I don’t want to wait until until late December or earlier January to find out. I’d rather have CP from now til end of dec 2017 than not have it at all.

  12. Is the SW Companion Pass flexible for whomever companion you wish to travel? Or is it limited to a specific companion for the duration of its benefits? That is, when I travel can i use the pass with Companion A on one booking but Companion B on another?

  13. Hi Daraius!

In the merger between SPG and Marriott, I chose to transfer my 90K SPG points to Marriott, and I understand I can transfer those to Southwest for the companion pass. But you are saying the redemption value is not good. Well, my SPG points were not valuable to me at all, because I paid a lot of points for two tickets RT First Class last year (Hawaiian Airlines) to Maui, it was around 150K for two tickets that would have cost about $2,000. The value of the points was disappointing. and the fact they are now worth something in Marriott is great. The companion pass is something DH and I can use at least 6 RT per year on SW.

In light of that, would you recommend the companion pass for us, or would you still go with the hotel + flight packages? Are you saying some of those redemption of those packages actually goes to the companion pass miles requirement?

    • Hi Cindy and Rick – Using SPG points for the Companion Pass is a great deal! And the way to do that is to redeem them for a Marriott “Hotel + Flight” package. That gets you 7 nights in a Marriott hotel AND enough points for the Companion pass. That said, don’t request the Hotel + Flight package until January 2017, so that you can get the most time from your Companion Pass.
