1.   Buy Big Ticket Items at Wholesale Clubs

Wholesale clubs like Costco don’t just sell groceries.  They sell quality big ticket items too, like furniture, appliances, televisions, jewelry, sporting and fitness equipment, and computers!

Wholesale clubs also sell things like toys, books, clothing, and other items that make good gifts.  So you could buy a Christmas, birthday, and anniversary gift now.  And earn 5X points for your purchase!

Note:  The Freedom is NOT a good card to use overseas because it charges a 3% foreign transaction fee.  Use cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Plus instead, that don’t charge foreign transaction fees.

Bottom Line

Register your Chase Freedom card by September 14, 2016, to earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on purchases at wholesale clubs and restaurants through September 30, 2016.

To earn the full number of bonus points with your Freedom card this quarter, you can do things like buy a gift in advance or pay for a friend’s meal.

And don’t forget, wholesale clubs sell expensive and quality items like furniture, appliances, and sporting goods.  And nightclubs and bars often count as a restaurant purchase!

  1. Don’t we need to carry a Chase Sapphire too in order to transfer those points to the said partner programs?

  2. Catering may or may not be counted for a bonus. I guess it depends on the vendor and how they classify their services. If it’s a restaurant, it could go either way. It’s possible they code the bill under a different corporation name that’s coded as catering, rather than restaurant. My experience is based off using the Chase SP card though. Catering charges on that card do not trigger a bonus.

  3. @Varun – Yes you need to have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Ink Bold (no longer available) to transfer the Ultimate Rewards points you earn with the Freedom card to travel partners.

    @Anthony – It definitely depends on how the charge is coded, so paying for catering isn’t a foolproof way to earn bonus points.
