Either way, you’ll have a lot of points to earn Big Travel on American Airlines!
You can NOT transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points directly to American Airlines. But, I’ll show you how you can book American Airlines award flights by transferring points to British Airways!
The Chase Ink Plus Card
With the current in-branch offer for the Ink Plus card you can:
Earn 70,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.
Earn 5 points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services each account anniversary year. Earn 2 points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and hotel accommodations when purchased directly with the hotel each account anniversary year. Earn 1 point per $1 on all other purchases – with no limit to the amount you can earn.
For folks who don’t live near a Chase branch or prefer online applications, the 60,000 point online offer is still a great deal.
And don’t forget, you don’t need a million dollar business to get the card. There are many ways to qualify for a small business card. As long as you’re looking to make a profit with your growing small business, it’s worth applying.
The Ink Plus can also be a good card if you’re new to the hobby and thinking about applying for other cards. Because with Chase’s tougher approval rules, if you’ve opened more than ~5 credit cards (not counting these business cards) within the past 24 months from ANY bank, it’s likely you will NOT be approved for most Chase cards.
Using Chase Ultimate Rewards Points for Big Travel on American Airlines
American Airlines and British Airways are part of the oneworld alliance. That means they have access to each other’s award flights, so you can book American Airlines flights using British Airways Avios points.
To search and book American Airlines award seats with British Airways Avios points, you must sign-up with British Airways Executive Club (free to join!).
British Airways has a distance-based award chart. So the amount you’ll pay depends on the length of your flight. You’ll pay:
- 7,500 British Airways Avios points for flights under 1,151 miles
- 10,000 British Airways Avios points for flights between 1,152 and 2,000 miles
- 12,500 British Airways Avios points for flights between 2,001 and 3,000 miles
Remember you can use British Airways Avios points on American Airlines as long as there are saver award seats available. And the best way to look for award seats is to first search on the American Airlines website.
Then once you find your flights, book your award ticket on the British Airways website. You can also call British Airways to book, but there’s a $25 phone service fee.
Here are 3 ways to get Big Travel on American Airlines with the Ink Plus sign-up bonus!
Last-Minute Trip to Miami
British Airways Avios points are very useful when you want to book last-minute American Airlines flights. Because when flight prices can increase last minute, the award flight price stays the same.
And, you’ll save money using British Airways Avios points because they do NOT add close-in booking fees. If you use American Airlines miles for the same flight they’ll add $75 to award tickets booked less than 21 days prior to departure.
For example, I found a non-stop, round-trip flight leaving Dallas on July 20, 2016, and returning from Miami on July 27, 2016, for only 15,000 British Airways Avios points and ~$11.
The same flight costs $357 if you paid cash. Or it costs 25,000 American Airlines miles if you booked directly through American Airlines.
Using the 70,000 points from the Ink Plus sign-up bonus for last-minute flights like this one could add up to big savings!
Winter Trip to Bermuda
Looking for an island vacation for winter? You and a few friends or family members could fly from New York (JFK) to Bermuda using the sign-up bonus from the Ink Plus Card.
I found a round-trip, non-stop flight on American Airlines in January 2017 for 15,000 British Airways Avios points and ~$100 per person. So the 70,000 point Ink Plus bonus is enough for 5 flights to Bermuda!
The same 5 tickets would cost ~$1,930. Meaning using British Airways Avios points would save you ~$1,430 ($1,930 cost of 5 tickets – $500 taxes and fees for 5 award tickets = $1,430).
You would need 2X the amount of American Airlines miles to book the same award flight. It costs 30,000 American Airlines miles for a ticket on the same route.
West Coast to Hawaii
There are limited available award seats using British Airways Avios points to book American Airlines flights to Hawaii. But, using British Airways Avios points is the cheapest way to get to Hawaii from the West Coast.
For example, I found a non-stop, round-trip flight leaving Los Angeles on August 9, 2016, and returning from Maui on August 15, 2016, for 25,000 British Airways Avios points and ~$11. There are 4 award seats available!
This means you can use the 75,000 points you’ll earn from the Ink Plus sign-up bonus and minimum spending requirement for 3 round-trip tickets to Hawaii. That’s an amazing deal with just 1 credit card sign-up bonus!
The same flight costs $578 per person if you paid cash or 45,000 American Airlines miles if you book directly on American Airlines. So, you’ll save ~$1,734 by using British Airways Avios points to book 3 round-trip American Airlines award flights to Hawaii!
And, if American Airlines award seats aren’t available, you can use British Airways Avios points to book Alaska Airlines flights to Hawaii.
You’ll earn 70,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points when you sign-up for the Ink Plus card in-branch and meet the minimum spending requirements.
That’s enough for up to ~$1,734 in savings if you transfer points to British Airways to book 3 round-trip American Airlines award flights to Hawaii or ~$1,430 in savings with 5 round-trip flights to Bermuda!
You can especially save money using British Airways Avios points to fly American Airlines during busy travel times or for last minute trips.
