Did you know there’s a simple way to book Delta flights with miles WITHOUT having to search for award tickets?

When you have the American Express Delta Gold (personal and business) or the American Express Delta Platinum card, you can book flights using Delta’s Pay With Miles.  And the 60,000 mile bonus on the AMEX Delta Platinum is worth $600 off Delta flights.

The American Express Delta Gold (personal and business) sign-up bonus has increased to 50,000 miles after meeting minimum spending requirements when you apply before July 6, 2016.

And the American Express Delta Platinum sign-up bonus has been increased to 60,000 miles after meeting minimum spending.  This also expires July 6, 2016.

Remember, AMEX small business cards do NOT appear on your personal credit report.  So getting the Gold Delta SkyMiles Card From American Express (Business) won’t impact your chances of being approved for valuable Chase cards later.

Simplicity! AMEX Delta Cardholders Can Pay for Delta Flights With Miles – Without Worrying About Available Award Seats

I’ll explain how Pay With Miles works!

What’s Pay With Miles?

Link:   Delta Pay With Miles

With Pay With Miles, you can redeem Delta miles at a rate of 1 cent per mile to pay for (or discount) the cost of Delta flights.

So 50,000 miles is worth $500 (50,000 miles X 1 cent per mile).  And 60,000 miles is worth $600 (60,000 miles X 1 cent per mile).

This benefit, however, is only available to holders of the American Express Gold and Platinum Delta SkyMiles or Delta Reserve credit cards.  Only primary cardholders (not authorized users) are eligible.

And to use Pay With Miles, you must book on the Delta website.  Only Delta and Delta connection operated flights are eligible (not partner flights).

You can redeem for paid flights in 5,000 mile ($50) increments.  And you’ll earn miles for your trip!

How to Use Pay With Miles

To use Pay With Miles, sign-in to your Delta account and search for your flights as you normally would.

Note:   Your AMEX Delta card must be linked to the same frequent flyer number for Pay With Miles to appear as a booking option.

Select your desired flight that is marked, “Pay with Miles eligible.

Choose the Number of Miles You’d Like to Use to Off-Set the Cost of Your Ticket

Note that you can only redeem miles in 5,000 mile ($50) increments.

After making your selection, continue booking your ticket as usual.  Your discount will be applied immediately and your miles will be deducted from your account.

Advantages & Drawbacks

If you don’t want to fuss with finding award seats, this is a quick and easy method to redeem your Delta miles.

That said, you can only redeem miles in 5,000 mile increments.  Which can make it tricky to use miles towards the full price of a ticket.

For example, let’s say your final ticket price comes to $310.  You’d have to use 35,000 miles (worth $350) to fully pay for that ticket, essentially losing 4,000 miles in the transaction.

Don’t Waste! Pay a Small Part of Your Ticket in Cash to Avoid Losing Miles in the Transaction

In such a case, I suggest you redeem 30,000 miles ($300) and pay the remaining $10 balance.  You’ll save 4,000 miles (worth $40).

Keep in mind, you’re only getting a rate of 1 cent per mile.  You can potentially get much more value by redeeming your miles for award flights, especially in Business and First Class.

Note:   If you use miles to fully or partially pay for your ticket, you won’t get the miles back if you cancel your trip except if you cancel your trip by midnight the day after you booked it.

From the terms & conditions:

In the event of a valid ticket cancellation under Delta’s Risk Free Cancellation policy, the Pay with Miles portion of the fare will be redeposited into the member’s SkyMiles account and the paid portion of the fare will be credited back to the credit card.

If you otherwise receive a refund, the value of the Pay With Miles portion will be credited to your account.

Delta says:

In the event of a refund (including fully refundable fares), only the paid portion of a refundable fare will be credited back to the credit card.  The Pay with Miles portion of the fare will be returned as non-refundable credit equivalent to the dollar value of the portion of the ticket redeemed with Pay with Miles.  Credit may be used to purchase future travel and these Pay with Miles terms and conditions will not apply to such tickets.

Bottom Line

Delta’s Pay With Miles is an easy method to redeem your miles for paid Delta flights.  Only American Express Delta credit card holders are eligible.

You’ll get a rate of 1 cent per mile towards paid tickets, and you must redeem in 5,000 mile ($50) increments.

For a limited time, there are increased sign-up bonuses on the AMEX Gold Delta SkyMiles personal and small business cards, and AMEX Platinum Delta card after completing minimum spending.  Using Pay With Miles, you could get paid flights worth up to $500 or $600 with the better bonuses!

And you won’t have to worry about searching for award flights!

  1. Is there a lifetime limit on number of times you can get a sign up bonus with Delta (per card)? For example, after two years have passed since getting your Chase United card, you can get the sign up bonus again for the same card. Does Delta allow this?
