Which Card to Use When Buying Daily Getaways Deals

Daily Getaways deals should code as travel.  My friend bought Choice hotel points and it posted as a travel purchase.

Consider using:

There’s only ONE credit card that earns Hyatt points directly.  The Chase Hyatt card gets you 2 free nights at any Hyatt after you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months of opening your account.

You could combine the 2 free nights from the Chase Hyatt card with the 72,000 Hyatt points purchased from the Daily Getaways promotion for a 4 night stay at a top category 7 Hyatt (which normally costs 30,000 points per night).

Also, you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards link instead to points to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio.  There’s no fee to convert points, and transfers are usually instant.

  1. Hello-
I enjoy your blog! Can this promotion be used in conjunction with reservations (and sweet deal!) using Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts?

  2. Would I be able to redeem Barclay points this way? Would Daily Getaways be coded as travel for redemption of the points?

  3. @xfinity – That wouldn’t work because this deal is for Hyatt points you can use for award stays. And AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings are for paid stays. Perhaps you could mix-and-match. And then ask Hyatt to keep you in the same room across a paid and award stay.

@Nate – Some folks report these purchases count as travel. So you CAN use Barclaycard Arrival miles to offset the cost, as long as you have as least 10,000 miles in your account.

  4. This definitely codes as a travel purchase? I was going to use my SPG to meet minimum spend but if it codes as travel I’ll use my CSP.

  5. @Ian – Other folks reported their purchase from an earlier Daily Getaway deal coded as a travel purchase:

    http://millionmilesecrets.com/2016/04/04/stay-at-nearly-any-wyndham-hotel-for-150-a-night-with-daily-getaways/

Let me know if you have a different experience!

  6. Hi. I’m new to the game and have a question. On points stays, do you pay city and state taxes and if so is it based on what the normal rate in cash?

  7. If I used a Chase Hyatt cc, would I earn 3x points? IOW, is this coded as a Hyatt purchase or a third party purchase?

  8. @Jo – Generally NOT. But if the hotel where you want to stay has daily resort fees, you typically still have to pay those.

    @anon – I believe it’s a third-party travel purchase.

  9. Unless you were already planning to spend $950+ a night at the park Hyatt New York, you didn’t actually save $1,140 for a two night stay. I am guessing 99% of folks reading this blog probably wouldn’t be spending that amount of cash. You are effectively paying about $380/night inclusive of tax to stay at the PH if you buy the points and redeem at the PH. Whether you saved money or not depends on the cash price you would have paid for lodging in New York absent this promotion. You do get to stay at a nicer hotel than a comparable hotel charging a cash price of $380/night but saying that this will “save” ppl money is a bit of a stretch.

  10. I used Barclay arrival + to purchase best western points from daily getaways. This purchase did log as travel on Barclay. So Barclay purchases over the next 90 will be used to pay points as travel.

  11. @cJ – That’s certainly one way of looking at it. You can also think of it as “splurging” on a fancy hotel room for $380 per night instead of paying full price.

As always, consider each deal for your situation. Some will make sense, and others you might decide to skip.

@Steve O – Excellent news! So you get an even better deal! Congrats!

  12. Thanks for sharing. I find Hyatt points very valuable, primarily because Hyatt Place is one of the few hotels that offers a pull out in nearly every room and works for my family of five. 40,000 points can get me 4 to 8 nights in areas I usually travel and will result in at least a 50% savings over the best price I could book. Plus a free Breakfast for 5 people! I prefer free points, but sometimes it makes sense to buy if you are running low. This would be one of those times.

  13. @Kinger – That’s an excellent way to use Hyatt points! Thanks for sharing! I love to hear about how folks put their points to good use, especially when you save 50% off the regular rates! 🙂

  14. Steve & MMS,
will we have to pay with the barclay cc to get reimbursed? i currently have about $400 in the acct. from the sign-up bonus

  15. how’s best to redeem the sign-up bonus of $400? TIA

  16. @dan – Yes, you must use your Barclaycard Arrival Plus card to redeem Barclaycard Arrival miles for a travel purchase. The best way to redeem your sign-up bonus is for any travel experience that’s special to you! 🙂

  17. Hi, if I applied for the chase sapphire and I’m just waiting to receive it. My question is: If I buy $900 worth of disney or universal tickets from undercover tourist, can I redeem my points for a travel purchase? If so, how much would my 59000 points be worth? Thank you so much in advance! I love your site.

  18. Sold out. Less than 1 second :p

  19. The Hyatt deal didn’t sell out within minutes, it sold out within seconds. I was refreshing my screen constantly starting at 12:58. As soon as the Buy Now button appeared, I clicked it ASAP, but all 120 packages were already on hold for other customers. I know, first world problems. 🙁

  20. This deal is great, but its sold out as soon as it went live. What a waste of time. Secondly, sometimes i think these deals are rigged.

  21. no luck @12.59 pm est! others have faster internet speed than mine, lol
