  1. You have obviously not endured an Air Berlin flight in the new XL seats you describe. I have experienced several flights in regular economy and XL. The seats are identical – hard and narrow. The only difference is legroom … 6 inches. The regular economy seat is unbearable and sets a new low for transatlantic travel … your knees are right up against the seat in front of you.
Lufthansa economy are more comfortable and legroom and closely equivalent to Air Berlin’s XL. On both Lufthansa and Air Berlin I have witnessed “Economy Plus” and “Premium Economy” sections almost empty because most people know there is little value for the upgrade. All that empty space could have gone to just providing decent economy seats as in the past. The bean counters at these airlines have gone mad and taken over …

  2. The above poster is correct! I flew XL and I did have extra legroom BUT it had stationary side panels like in an exit row. The result was more legroom but a narrow seat that was not very comfortable. I complained so loud about them; they did move me to a regular seat with 2 empty seats beside me.

  3. @JERE @Jimster – Thanks for letting us know! Emily had a good experience in coach on Air Berlin. I’m sure readers will find your experience helpful!
