In summers past, the bonus on the AMEX Starwood personal and small business cards has been as high as 30,000 Starwood points. That’s 5,000 points more than the usual offer for 25,000 Starwood points.
But if you apply before March 30, 2016, you can earn 35,000 Starwood points after meeting minimum spending requirements.
With 35,000 Starwood points, you could even treat yourself to a night at a luxury Category 7 Starwood hotel!
And it’s uncertain what will happen to Starwood points after the potential merger. So if you want to get a terrific sign-up bonus, now is a great time to apply for these cards!
Note: American Express only allows folks to get the sign-up bonus ONCE per person, per lifetime on ALL their cards.
5 Hotels in the US That Make Fantastic Award Stays
Note that all of the hotels on this list are eligible to get the 5th night free on an award stay because they are Starwood Category 3 to Category 7 hotels.
When searching for an award stay, I like using Hotel Hustle because it shows you if award nights are available and how many points you’ll need for your stay.
I haven’t stayed at these hotels, but they all look terrific and might give you some ideas for your next escape!
1. The St. Regis San Francisco
The fantastic St. Regis San Francisco is located right next to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and is within walking distance to many other popular attractions.
It gets almost all 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor. Folks love its central location, modern design, and top-notch concierge service.
A Category 7 hotel, a night here in July 2016 costs ~$770 after taxes and fees, or 30,000 Starwood points.
It offers wonderful views of the city, a spa, and an infinity pool. This hotel is a great choice for a special occasion! And using your Starwood points would save you a lot of money!
2. The Westin Austin Downtown
Austin is known for its lively music scene and amazing food. Living here, I can attest to how awesome the restaurants are!
Located right in the heart of downtown, you can be close to all of the action!
It’s just a few blocks away from the popular Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill, where you can enjoy drinks and classic Southern food. Like chicken fried steak and mac & cheese! It almost makes me want to start eating meat again! 😉
This Category 6 hotel would cost you 20,000 Starwood points per night or ~$312 in July 2016.
With the Starwood small business card you will have enough points for 2 free nights (40,000 Starwood points) here!
That’s because when you meet the minimum spending requirement of $5,000, you’ll earn at least 5,000 Starwood points. That’s in addition to the 35,000 Starwood point sign-up bonus. For a total of 40,000 Starwood points!
3. The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki
You can stay at The Royal Hawaiian in Hawaii, a Starwood Category 6 hotel, for 20,000 to 25,000 Starwood points per night, depending on the season.
Nights here in July 2016, during the peak season, cost ~$482 or 25,000 Starwood points. So using your Starwood points here is a great way to get an expensive room for free!
4. Aloft Chicago City Center
Chicago is a terrific spot for a weekend getaway. It’s known for its amazing art museums, restaurants, and great sporting events.
I found nights in July 2016 for ~$290 or 12,000 Starwood points per night.
So the personal AMEX Starwood card sign-up bonus would be enough for 3 free nights (36,000 Starwood points)!
That’s because when you meet the minimum spending requirement of $3,000, you’ll earn at least 3,000 Starwood points. That’s in addition to the 35,000 Starwood point sign-up bonus. For a total of 38,000 Starwood points.
And that’s getting Big Travel with Small Money!
5. The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland
A Category 5 hotel, free nights here in July 2016 cost 16,000 Starwood points. So either the personal or small business AMEX Starwood card sign-up bonus would be enough for 2 free nights (32,000 Starwood points)!
If you paid cash, it would cost ~$365 per night. So using your AMEX Starwood card bonus could save you over $700!
You could take a trip to nearby Mt. Hood with the savings! The skiing there is great in the winter!
There are many Starwood hotels in the US where you can get Big Travel with Small Money!
The sign-up bonus on the AMEX Starwood card (personal and small business) is usually 25,000 Starwood points, so you’ll get an extra 10,000 Starwood points with the current 35,000 point sign-up bonus. Extra points are valuable because Starwood points are so hard to earn!
This offer expires March 30, 2016, and the sign-up bonus has never been this high. So this is a great time to apply, especially if you’re considering a trip to any of these wonderful cities in the US!
