The Chase Freedom’s rotating 5X points (5% cash back) bonus categories are a terrific way to earn lots of Chase Ultimate Rewards points!

But you have to activate the bonus.  And today’s the last day!

You’ll earn 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (5% cash back) on up to $1,500 in spending each quarter.  That works out to a maximum of 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points or $75 cash back every 3 months, for a maximum of 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($300 cash back) each year (5X points x $1,500 x 4 quarters).

Until March 31, 2016, you’ll earn the bonus at gas stations and on commuter transportation, which includes:

  • Taxis
  • Subways
  • Local commuter buses and trains
  • Local commuter ferry tickets
  • Uber and Lyft

Note:   Non-US commuter transportation, parking lots and garages, tolls, and Amtrak are excluded from the commuter transportation category.  Here’s a full list of what’s included (and excluded).

Why I Keep the Freedom Card in My Wallet

I’ve kept the Chase Freedom for years because it has no annual fee and is a great way to earn lots of Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Remember, if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold (no longer available) card, you can move Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned from the Chase Freedom to 1 of those accounts.

And from there, transfer them to terrific travel partners like United Airlines and Hyatt like I did when I flew Business Class on United Airlines to Australia and stayed in the Park Hyatt Sydney.

For Folks Who Don’t Yet Have the Freedom Card

The sign-up bonus on the Chase Freedom is currently 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($150 cash back) when you spend $500 on purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.  Here’s my full review of this offer.

And you’ll earn an additional 2,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($25 cash back) when you add an authorized user who makes a purchase in the same timeframe.

Remember, Chase has changed their card application rules.  If you’ve opened ~5 or more credit cards in the past 24 months, it’s unlikely you’ll be approved for any Chase Ultimate Rewards points-earning card, like the Chase Freedom.

Check out my posts on how to get $225 worth of flights with the Chase Freedom’s sign-up bonuses.  And how to use it for Big Travel on Southwest, United Airlines, American Airlines, and at Hyatt hotels.

And don’t forget, tomorrow (March 15, 2016) is the 1st day to activate the Chase Freedom’s 2nd quarter bonus categories, which include grocery stores.  Don’t worry, you won’t invalidate the 1st quarter bonus by activating for the 2nd quarter!
