I’ll show you 5 hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico where you can stay with Marriott points!
5 Outstanding Marriott Hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico for Award Stays
Marriott made updates to their loyalty program last year, including points advance and sharing.
Don’t forget, you’ll also get the 5th night free on any award stay! So if you want to stay longer, it’s an excellent way to save 20% of your points!
I like using Hotel Hustle to find hotels for award stays because it shows you how many points you’ll need for your specific travel dates. And show you if award nights are available at hotels, including Marriott!
Another option is AwardMapper. But it’s not specific to travel dates and won’t search for available award rooms.
I haven’t personally stayed at these hotels, but they look terrific! Let me know if you’ve had an experience with any of them!
Note: The prices in these examples are based on travel in April 2016 except where noted.
Note: Some Marriott hotels (especially resorts) add pricey resort fees to paid and award nights. Before you book, check the hotel policy to decide if it’s worth it for you. And here are my tips on how to avoid them! I’ve noted in my examples which hotels add resort fees.
Marriott hotels include:
- AC Hotels by Marriott
- Autograph Collection Hotels
- Bulgari Hotels
- Courtyard by Marriott
- Delta Hotels
- Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott
- Gaylord Hotels
- JW Marriott
- Marriott Executive Apartments
- Marriott Hotels
- Marriott Vacation Club
- Moxy Hotels
- Protea Hotels
- Renaissance Hotels
- Residence Inn by Marriott
- Springhill Suites by Marriott
- TownePlace Suites by Marriott
Note: There are rumors that starting April 2016, Chase will make it tougher to be approved for ANY of their cards (including airline & hotel cards) if you’ve opened ~5+ credit card accounts with any bank within the past 24 months.
So I recommend folks 1st sign-up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Here’s why. But if you already have the Chase Sapphire Preferred or don’t want it, consider this offer for the Chase Marriott Premier. Or the other Chase cards in Hot Deals.
1. Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino
The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino is located on Palm Beach in Aruba, only ~20 minutes from the airport. So you can start relaxing soon after you land!
The hotel has an adults-only pool, 6 restaurants and 2 bars (including a poolside bar), and a balcony for every room so you can take in the warm Caribbean breeze.
And, there’s a 24-hour casino on the hotel grounds in case you want to take a spin on the slots or try your best hand at poker. 🙂
Two nights cost ~$781 or 90,000 Marriott points. Folks on TripAdvisor gave this hotel nearly all 5-star reviews!
Remember you’ll earn at least 3,000 Marriott points when you complete the minimum spending requirements. And another 7,500 bonus Marriott points when you add an authorized user who makes a purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
That’s enough for 2 free nights in Aruba!
2. Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort
Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort is located in the US Virgin Islands. So you don’t need a passport to visit here!
The hotel has 4 restaurants and 4 bars, plus a cafe and a deli. There are 4 pools (including 2 infinity pools), a spa, and a fitness center.
And when it’s time to relax, you can head to the beach overlooking Morningstar Bay on the Caribbean coast.
Two nights here cost ~$905 (which includes a $45 daily resort fee) or 90,000 Marriott points plus a $45 daily resort fee.
Resort fees are common for hotels in the Caribbean, so be sure to look for them! The fee at this hotel includes Wi-Fi, rental snorkel gear, floats, and aerobics classes.
But you can ask if they’ll reduce the charge if you don’t plan on taking advantage of the amenities.
3. Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort
Nights at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort cost ~$656 (including a $45 daily resort fee), or 45,000 Marriott points per night plus a $45 daily resort fee. It’s located on famous Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman, near Georgetown.
And when you redeem 90,000 Marriott points to stay here, you’ll save ~$1,223! That’s a fantastic deal!
Remember, Marriott is a 1:1 transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards. So if you’re close to an award stay, you can easily and quickly top-up your account for a Caribbean getaway!
4. JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa
The JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa is located within the Hotel Zone in Cancun. You’ll enjoy access to white-sand beaches and turquoise water off the coast. And there’s lots to do in the area, like diving off Isla Mujeres, or visiting legendary Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza.
This hotel costs ~$357 or 40,000 Marriott points per night. So you can save ~$714 when you redeem 80,000 Marriott points here.
If you want to stay longer, consider mixing your Marriott away stay with a paid stay on Airbnb. That way you get a 2-for-1 experience in Cancun (or any other destination on this list!). Here are my tips on how to find a good and safe Airbnb rental.
5. JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa
The JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa is located on the beach in Los Cabos. Perfect for relaxing during a trip away to Mexico!
Folks on TripAdvisor love the service and modern look of this hotel.
Two nights here cost ~$726 or 80,000 Marriott points. So the 80,000 Marriott points you’ll earn with the Chase Marriott Premier card welcome bonus are worth over ~$700!
There’s plenty to do in the area, like whale-watching, sailing, or scuba diving. Emily just got her license to scuba dive, so this would be a fantastic place to put her new skills to use!
Other Ways to Earn Marriott Points
Remember, you can also get the Chase Ritz-Carlton Rewards card. You’ll earn 2 free nights at any Tier 1 to 4 Ritz-Carlton hotel, after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
Marriott and Ritz-Carlton are basically the same frequent-guest program (just with different branding and marketing), so you can use your Marriott points to stay at Ritz-Carlton hotels and vice versa.
The $395 annual fee is NOT waived, but it comes with perks and benefits that can easily offset it, like a $300 annual travel credit (which includes reimbursed Global Entry fees, checked luggage, and seat upgrades).
If you like Ritz-Carlton hotels, it’s a great card to have. Here’s my review.
Plus, earn another 7,500 bonus Marriott points when you add an authorized user who makes a purchase within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
There are lots of outstanding Marriott hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico where you can get award stays. 80,000 Marriott points are enough for 2 nights at Marriott Category 8 hotels (and nearly enough for Category 9 hotels), like the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa in Cancun, or the Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort in the US Virgin Islands.
Let me know your favorite Marriott hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico!
