Update:   Beginning July 23, 2017, the 4th night free perk will refund the average cost of a 4-night stay, NOT including taxes.

Getting the 4th night free on paid hotel stays is 1 of the best perks of the Citi Prestige card.

And I’ll show you how to always be sure you’re getting the best price on your room!

Are You Sure About That Price? Double-Check Citi’s Prices Against the Hotel’s Site for Extra Promotions and Discounts

I’ll explain why it’s worth it!

Why You Should Always Check Your Quoted Room Rate

One of the many perks you get with the Citi Prestige card is the 4th night free on hotel stays booked through the Citi Travel Concierge.

This 1 of the 10 best travel deals!  And with recent improvements to the booking process, it’s also 1 of the 10 easiest awards to book!

However, you should still take steps to make sure you’re getting the best price on your stay.  Here’s how to make an already fantastic perk even better!

1.   Check the Price on the Hotel’s Website

If you don’t know where you want to stay, you can call the number on the back of your Citi Prestige card.  And ask the Citi Travel Concierge to send you a list of hotels in the area you want to visit.

Once You Pick Your Hotel, Like the Hyatt Zilara Cancun, You Can Check the Price and Any Discounts!

Once you pick a hotel, or if you already know where you want to stay, pull up the room rates on the hotel’s website.

Note:   Citi can NOT match prices you find on other online travel agencies like Orbitz or Expedia.  That’s because Citi uses their own travel agency.  But they CAN match the price offered directly from the hotel.

Say, for example, you find a room at the Hyatt Zilara Cancun for Cinco de Mayo.

The Hyatt Zilara Cancun Has a 50% Off Promotion. But Citi May Not See the Promotional Rate Right Away

You’ll see a promotion for 50% off the standard rate.

And then you dig a little deeper because you have a AAA membership, and search for a AAA room rate.

Special Room Rates, Like a AAA or AARP Membership, Can Make a Good Deal Even Better. And Citi Can Match These Prices – You Just Have to Ask!

You’d save an extra $38 a night.  That saves you $152 on a 4-night stay!

But in the examples above, notice the standard room rate is still listed for $768 per night.  If for some reason the Citi Travel Concierge isn’t looking for discounts, they might quote you this room rate.  And you’d end up paying over double!

2.   Call Citi to Adjust the Price

But, Million Mile Secrets readers are travel-savvy, and know how to find the best deals!

You Can Call or Message Citi Directly to Update Your Price

You can call Citi to make the adjustment to your room rate.  Or you can send a secure message.  However, I find that calling is easier and faster.

As long as you’ve found a better room rate on the hotel’s website, Citi should be able to match the better price.

And you can combine Prestige’s 4th night free with special rates like AARP, AAA, and military discounts, status perks, hotel rewards, and hotel promotions for Big Savings!

Keep in mind, anyone can join AARP for ~$16 and take advantage of their travel discounts.

Sweeten the Deal

You’ll get the best deal if you try to arrange your stay so the most expensive night is your 4th night.  That’s because Citi Prestige will reimburse you for the actual cost of your 4th night, NOT the average cost of 4 nights.

The 4th Night Is Reimbursed – Even If It’s the Most Expensive!

For the Hyatt Zilara Cancun example, each night costs ~$346.  So when the 4th night is reimbursed, it’s effectively a 25% discount.

But say the 1st 3 nights cost ~$346.  And the 4th night costs $500.  In that case, you’d get $500 back, which is more than 25% of the total room rate!

This is a great way to make the most of high-season rates, for things like home games for sports teams, annual celebrations or parades, or any other special event that would drive up the price of hotels.

And here are my other tips on how to save even more money with this terrific perk!

Bottom Line

The 4th night free benefit on paid hotel stays is 1 of the best features of the Citi Prestige card.  Make a good thing even better by looking for extra discounts or promotions!

That’s because you can combine the 4th night free with special rates like AARP, AAA, and military discounts, status perks, hotel rewards, and hotel promotions to save even more money.

To get special rates honored, call the number on the back of your card.  Or send a secure message.

It’s always worth it to check, especially when you can save money!

  1. This is a great article but I don’t believe this benefit applies to all inclusive resorts. A couple of weeks ago I attempted to book this exact same resort and was told they would only be able to apply the fourth night benefit if the resort was able to separate the room charge from the all inclusive cost and unfortunately they were not able to do so. Was this information accurate or was it simply a miss informed agent.

  2. Daraius:
I effectively used the discount using code z3h on Spg. This code gives you the third night for free in certain hotels. If you search for a 4 night stay using the code, the third night will be free but not the 4th one. Citi then will reimburse you that 4th night, effectively making the discount 50%, since both the 3rd and 4rd night will be free.
You have to do the math, because the buy 2 get 1 free night fares are always higher than hot scapes or other fares. But if the math works, it is one of the best discounts I have ever had.
    Your welcome.

  3. Theoretically, if you book an SPG stay for five nights and pay with this card, do you get the 4th night reimbursed by Citi and the 5th night free as part of SPG promo?

  4. I’m not sure either of the above two examples work, because it’s not enough to just pay for the stay with the card, how have to actually book the room using the CITI concierge travel agent who may not be able to use the promo codes you guys have mentioned.

  5. Is it good to apply citi prestige card now? (as today Feb 16th,2016). Can I still get 2 X $250 airline credit if I buy airline credit card next year (around Jan.) before annual fee post? Thanks.

  6. Pritesh, you have to guide the travel agent on the phone to use the code you want them to use. As long as they can use the code in their computer, it will work. It is available for the public.
The trick is that you have to search it and do it yourself before and then call the Citi concierge line.

  7. Unfortunately, not all deals have codes. I tried it compared to a medical conference rate and it would have cost me more than $1000 to get a “free” night. I am not too impressed with the benefits of the Prestige as someone who doesn’t golf and who already has the lounge access with the AMEX Platinum. Can anyone explain why I might want to keep it? I’m having trouble seeing it.

  8. @Alex – Lots of folks have been able to book all-inclusive resorts with Citi Prestige’s 4th night free perk. Here are lots of comments from folks on FlyerTalk (including some who have booked all-inclusives):

    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/citi-thankyou-rewards/1636854-anybody-used-citi-prestige-4th-night-free-hotel-benefit.html

Maybe you could call back and try speaking with another agent?

@Ricardo – That’s terrific! Congrats on getting such a good deal. And thanks for sharing your experiences!

@Anya K – This benefit only works for paid stays, not award stays.

@Pritesh Patel – You can ask the Citi Travel Concierge to plug in promotional codes for you. Most of them work. Especially if you can add them directly on the hotel’s website.

@David Book – That would work!

@dirk woods – You get lounge access to Admirals Club lounges, which is helpful if you fly American Airlines a lot.

You also get a $250 annual airline credit. And the sign-up bonus is worth up to $800 on American Airlines flights!

    Here are the details:
    http://millionmilesecrets.com/2015/05/13/citi-prestige-is-not-a-sock-drawer-card/

It’s a fantastic card if you make the most of the benefits.

  9. Dirk, I believe the priority pass you get with the Amex only allows one person to get to the club (you). With the Prestige pass you can get yourself and 2 immediate family members.

The $250 credit with the prestige can be used for any spend including flights. For amex is a lot trickier as only fees are reimbursed.
The 4th free night is the best benefit of any card out there in my opinion. Remember that if you use it on a Hyatt for example, you’ll get credit also for the night toward status, even though the 4th night was free. You can add you hotel frequent traveler number to any of these reservation. It works as a regular hotel stay for the promotions and status. For example, SPG has now doble points on stays until April 30. Because the whole amount gets charged, you get 4X points for the whole amount. Then you get a credit from citi on your credit card.
Best new card out there in the last 2 years in my opinion.

  10. Is there a way to check the real 4th night rate. Some hotels will only give you the average rate for the stay. If you just look up the rate for the 4th night of the reservation the night not be available so you can’t get it. Also if you stay 5 nights will the free night be the 4th night, not the last night?

  11. @Dan – You could always call the hotel to ask about the rates. Or ask Citi Travel Concierge because they can see the rates per night.

The 4th night is always free when you book through Citi Travel Concierge and pay with your Citi Prestige card, even if you stay longer than 4 nights.

  12. Will I also get SPG platinum benefit and earn SPG stay credit if I book with 4th night free? Thx!
