This summer, there are new routes to interesting destinations ranging from huge cities like Singapore to small towns on Cape Cod, and everything in between! And hopefully, it’ll mean more ways to redeem your miles and points!
I’ll tell you about the new routes. And give you ideas about how to use miles and points for award seats!
New Routes Give You New Ways to Redeem Miles & Points!
While more award seats aren’t guaranteed on these new flights, I’m hopeful they’ll open up closer to departure. And some of them are already available to book with miles and points. So keep an eye out if any of them interest you!
1. San Francisco to Singapore on United Airlines
Starting June 1, 2016, United Airlines will operate the longest flight of any airline in the world, from San Francisco to Singapore. This is exciting because folks will be able to redeem their United Airlines miles for an award seat!
Remember, United Airlines is a 1:1 transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards. So it’s easy and fast to get extra United Airlines miles for an award seat.
And folks with lots of AMEX Membership Rewards points could transfer their points to Air Canada or ANA. And then book an award seat on United Airlines. That’s because all 3 airlines are a part of the Star Alliance.
Even if you’re not near San Francisco, you can use your miles to connect in San Francisco for no additional cost. That’s because most airlines (including United Airlines) charge a set price from anywhere in the US – no matter where you begin your trip!
2. Cross-Country on JetBlue
There will be 2 new options to fly across the country on JetBlue. Starting May 12, 2016, folks in Boston can fly non-stop to Salt Lake City, and vice-versa.
And from June 16, 2016, JetBlue will also fly between Fort Lauderdale and San Diego!
When you book an award seat on JetBlue, the number of JetBlue points required is tied to the retail cost. So if these routes are priced low, they could be a new, cheap way to fly cross-country!
Keep in mind, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to JetBlue at a 5:4 ratio.
Or, you can book with flexible points like Chase Ultimate Rewards. Each point is worth 1.25 cents each in the Chase Travel Portal when you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or (no longer offered) Chase Ink Bold.
And if you have the Citi ThankYou Premier card, you can use Citi ThankYou points to book flights through the Citi Travel Center, where they’re also worth 1.25 cents each.
3. Between Buffalo and Los Angeles on JetBlue
This summer, JetBlue will launch non-stop flights between Buffalo and Los Angeles. The Buffalo airport is ~20 miles to world-famous Niagara Falls!
These year-round flights begin June 16, 2016.
The new Barclaycard JetBlue cards will be a terrific way to earn bonus points toward an award seat on this route!
4. Between New York City and Nantucket on Delta
Delta will have a summer-only flight between New York – LaGuardia and Nantucket on Saturdays from June 4, 2016, through September 3, 2016.
Domestic round-trip coach award flights on Delta are usually available for 25,000 Delta miles. You can transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Delta at a 1:1 ratio.
Keep in mind it might be cheaper to redeem your:
- Chase Ultimate Rewards points
- Citi ThankYou points
- US Bank FlexPerks points
- Barclaycard Arrival points
So run the numbers to make sure you’re getting a good deal.
Whichever way you choose, this is a great way to relax on gorgeous Cape Cod during the summer! Or for folks to visit the Big Apple.
Don’t Forget Starwood Points!
Many of the airlines mentioned above are also partners with Starwood. If an airline has a 1:1 transfer ratio with Starwood, you’ll earn 5,000 bonus miles for every 20,000 Starwood points you transfer.
Here’s the list of transfer partners:

|American Airlines||Asia Miles (Cathay Pacific)||Asiana Airlines|
