Redeem Your Miles or Points to Fly to Lisbon, Portugal. And Then Visit Nearby Cities, Like Beautiful Sintra!

I’ll tell you about the new routes.  And give you ideas about how to use miles & points for award seats!

Lots of New Routes = New Ways to Use Your Miles & Points!

While more award seats aren’t guaranteed on these new flights, I’m hopeful they’ll open up closer to departure.  That could mean a LOT more options for folks in certain cities.

1.   Boston to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific

Folks in Boston will get a 5th flight on Cathay Pacific direct to Hong Kong.  This new flight will be seasonal.  It’s scheduled to begin this summer.

You can get an award seat on Cathay Pacific with American Airlines miles, Alaska Airlines miles, or British Airways Avios points.

Here’s how to find and book award flights on Cathay Pacific with American Airlines miles.  Keep in mind American Airlines is changing their award chart starting March 22, 2016.

Alaska Airlines will fly between Portland and Atlanta from June 4, 2016, to August 27, 2016.

Remember, you’ll earn 25,000 Alaska Airlines miles when you’re approved for the Bank of America Alaska Airlines card.  And if you haven’t had the card the card before, you’ll get a $100 statement credit after making $1,000 in purchases within the 1st 90 days of opening an account.

25,000 Alaska Airlines miles is enough to fly this new route round-trip for only the cost of taxes!

4.   Newark to Portugal on TAP Air Portugal

Starting June 1, 2016, folks near Newark airport will have 12 weekly flights to Portugal to choose from on TAP Air Portugal.

TAP Air Portugal is part of the Star Alliance.  And it includes United Airlines which is a partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards.

So you can redeem United Airlines miles (or other Star Alliance partner airlines miles) for an award seat on these flights!

And folks with lots of AMEX Membership Rewards points could transfer their points to Air Canada.  And then book an award seat on TAP Air Portugal.

5.   Boston to San Francisco on JetBlue

Now there are even more choices for folks in Boston!

JetBlue will add 3 daily non-stop flights to San Francisco.  They’ll add a daily flight on March 24, 2016, and a 2nd on April 20, 2016.  By September 20, 2016, all 3 new daily flights will be in service.

Now It’ll Be Easier to Get Award Flights From Boston to San Francisco on JetBlue!

Hopefully all these new flights will have low prices.  Because the number of JetBlue points required for a flight is tied to the retail cost.  If so, this could be a new, cheap way to fly cross-country!

JetBlue also plans to offer its premium Mint service with lie-flat seats on this route.

6.   WestJet Flights to Canada

WestJet is a Canadian budget airline with their own rewards program.  So while you can’t use other miles for WestJet award flights, budget airlines are a fantastic way to see new places.

Starting June 2016, you can fly between:

  • Nashville and Toronto
  • Los Angeles and Toronto
  • San Diego and Vancouver

Flights to Canada can be expensive.  So this will be an inexpensive and easy way to visit the Great White North!  You might consider using Barclaycard Arrival miles earned from the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard to cover the cost of these flights.

  1. To qualify for the $100 Alaska statement credit you have to be a new cardholder, as NEVER had the card before? Or just not currently/recently?

  2. @Brian – The terms say: “This one-time promotion is limited to new customers opening an account in response to this offer.”

I take it to mean you can only get the $100 statement credit if this is your 1st time having the card.
