  1. Ah, despite blackbird friday, we can the travel-blogger-industrial-complex depends upon staying within the good graces of the AMEX. Sorry, not impressed by the hook here…. Pretty sure we already have similar protections via no-fee Chase and Citi cards that have long been held. (and even if we didn’t a lot of us will be sore pressed to do much business with the amex borg going forward, as is our right to be to’ed. Resistance is not Futile. Then again, tis your right to delete and ban me too, as per the wishes of your paymaster. )

    they never say loss or misplaced is not covered.

Seems like all the blogs forget to mention, this only holds true if you DO NOT have Home Owners or Renters Insurance, because AMEX makes you use those first and/or sign a form stating you do not have any other type of insurance that would cover your losses. Most Home Owners or Renters Insurance do cover all these losses.

    So you mean, if I lose my phone in my trip to Miami, My home insurance will cover this ? I dont think so… My understanding it “Home” Insurance is for “Home” and what ever is inside home.

  6. @Karthik, have you ever read your policy? It doesn’t just cover things when you’re “at home,” it covers things while you’re abroad too, same goes for renters insurance. I know, because I’ve had both, go ahead, call them up, if your phone or camera gets stolen while on vacation, renters or home insurance covers it and you can file a claim with them. AMEX insurance is secondary to that, if your renters or home insurance doesn’t cover the full expense, AMEX will cover whatever is left over, of course only if you bought the items using an AMEX card. If you think “Home”
    covers only what’s in the home, you’re in for a big surprise, and that surprise could be insurance fraud in AMEX’s eyes. Be careful….

  7. TIME RESTRICTION: READ THE COVERAGE CAREFULLY: I believe it only applies for the first ninety days (or 120 days) after purchase.

  8. @Karthik @Kody @StevesMiles – I spoke to a representative from AMEX who said each claim is reviewed by underwriting, and any decision on whether or not to honor a claim is ultimately up to them. However, you do have a responsibility to “reasonably safeguard” your items before you file a claim and report them as a loss.

    The wording in the terms and conditions gives them wiggle room to make a decision, and it’s always case-by-case.

    That said, be sure to review the terms and conditions so you know what to expect before you file a claim:

  9. I have the Amex regular gold card. I lost my iphone in Barcelona 2 weeks ago. I called Amex… we did the claim over the phone in 15 minutes. They needed serial number and date of purchase. I believe they asked if I had any other insurance, which I did not. I had a credit on my account within 7 days.

  11. Slightly off topic but similar I had a great experience with Amex when I had a single car accident in a rental car. I called them and they took care of the claim from that point on with minimal involvement on my part. And they never asked about my car insurance.
