This is a terrific deal!  And a great chance for folks to explore 2 vibrant cities for very little money.  Usually, flights from the US to China start at ~$800 or more, depending on the time of year.

Update:   Thanks to Million Mile Secrets reader josh for reminding folks to sign-up for the Hainan Airlines frequent flyer program.  You can use their miles to book award tickets on Air Berlin!

Or consider crediting your flight to partner Alaska Airlines.  The fare class only earns 50% miles, but if you collect Alaska Airlines miles this could be a better deal!

Book Quickly, but…

If you’re looking for a cheap ticket to Beijing or Shanghai, you should book this quickly.  Low fares don’t last long.  Read my post about booking mistake and low fares.

That said, this is NOT a mistake fare.  It’s a very good seat sale!  So once you’ve booked you should be able to confidently make other arrangements, like hotels and tours.

What If You’re Not in an Included City?

You can get to Boston, Chicago, San Jose, or Seattle cheaply by using points (like British Airways Avios points) to get there.

British Airways Avios points are great for short-haul flights.  Because it only costs 4,500 British Airways Avios points 1-way in coach for flights less than 649 miles (until February 3, 2016), and 7,500 British Airways Avios points for flights up to 1,149 miles.

Or if you have the Southwest Companion Pass, you could fly to these cities very cheaply.  That’s because with the Companion Pass, your companion flies with you for almost free on both paid and award tickets.

Or you could try to find a cheap paid ticket from your home airport to 1 of the sale cities.  But do the math to see what makes sense to you!

  1. I flew with Hainan in Aug and their 787 is pretty nice. One more thing is you can book connecting RT flights to other cities in China like Guangzhou even Hong Kong from 10 to 60 bucks more (depend on dates) within the same itinerary.

Be aware you should sign up their FFP before your flight departure date in order to redeem miles. They are currently not with any alliances but you could book award ticket on airberlin flights. I forgot to do so and wasted 15,000 miles 🙁

  2. @josh – Thanks for the reminder! I’ve put a note in the post.
