Update: Beginning February 2, 2016, British Airways will no longer offer 1-way, short-haul (under 650 miles) coach award tickets on partner airlines in North America for 4,500 British Airways Avios points. Instead these flights will cost 7,500 British Airways Avios points.
That’s enough for 4 round-trip coach tickets from the West Coast to Hawaii on British Airways partners Alaska Airlines or American Airlines! Or 4 round-trip coach tickets on British Airways partner Aer Lingus between Boston and Dublin.
And I’ll highlight other great ways to get Big Travel with British Airways Avios points, like how to get 13 free round-trip flights with all the points you’ll earn!
This is a terrific deal! The sign-up bonus is usually 50,000 British Airways Avios points, so this is double the usual offer!
But you’ll have to do a lot of spending to earn the full 100,000 British Airways Avios points!
I’ll explain how to earn the bonus and what you can do with all those British Airways Avios points!
What’s the Deal?
This is a terrific opportunity to earn a huge number of British Airways Avios points! But to get the full bonus, you’ll have to spend:
- $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of opening your account (earn 50,000 British Airways Avios points)
- $10,000 (total) on purchases in the first year of opening your account (earn an additional 25,000 British Airways Avios points)
- $20,000 (total) on purchases in the first year of opening your account (earn another 25,000 British Airways Avios points)
So you’ll have to make $20,000 in purchases during the 1st year to earn all 100,000 British Airways Avios points.
Fortunately, there are lots of ways to meet credit card minimum spending requirements!
With this card, you’ll also get:
- 3 British Airways Avios points per $1 you spend on British Airways purchases
- 1 British Airways Avios point per $1 you spend on everything else
- Earn a Travel Together Ticket (your companion flies with you on a British Airways award flight for just the cost of taxes and fees) when you spend $30,000 on the card in a calendar year
- No foreign transaction fees
The $95 annual fee is NOT waived for the 1st year. But it’s worth it for 100,000 British Airways Avios points!
Remember, if you’ve had this card in the past, Chase typically allows folks to earn the sign-up bonus again as long as it’s been at least 24 months since you last received the bonus.
Chase is known for their great customer service! So if you’ve recently (within ~3 months) applied for this card with the lower bonus, it’s worth calling to see if they’ll match you to the higher offer.
And if your application isn’t immediately approved, call Chase to see if they’ll reconsider. Often they just require more information. You can also suggest they reduce your credit line on another Chase card to allow you to open this new account.
Don’t forget, this is a Visa card, so you’ll have access to Visa discounts at participating merchants, including certain hotels, car rental companies, cruise lines, and attractions.
What Can You Do With 100,000 British Airways Avios Points?
You can get a LOT of Big Travel with 100,000 British Airways Avios points!
And remember, you’ll earn at least another 20,000 British Airways Avios points from the $20,000 in minimum spending required to unlock the bonus.
1. Award Flights on British Airways
British Airways has a distance-based award chart, which means the number of points required for an award flight depends on the length of each flight in your itinerary.
This can be an excellent deal for shorter flights! And if you can fly during off-peak times (on British Airways flights only), you’ll save points.
That said, most folks avoid using British Airways Avios points for award flights on British Airways. That’s because British Airways adds high fees to most of their own award tickets (sometimes hundreds of dollars!).
However, if you manage to spend $30,000 in a calendar year on the card and qualify for the Travel Together Ticket, it could be worth paying the surcharges on British Airways, especially in Business or First Class.
Note: Taxes and fees on British Airways award tickets within Europe are generally lower than those required for long-haul flights. It’s always worth checking!
2. Short Haul Flights on Partner Airlines
Flights under 650 miles only cost 4,500 British Airways Avios points 1-way in coach! And there are no fuel surcharges!
You can check the Wandering Aramean Avios Tool to see all the short-haul routes available from your airport.
One thing I really like about booking with British Airways Avios points is there are NO late booking fees! Some airlines charge a fee when you book a ticket within 21 days of departure. But you can procrastinate without penalty with British Airways Avios points! 🙂
Also, flights booked close to your date of travel are usually more expensive. And that’s exactly when you’d want to use points instead of cash!
With the 100,000 point sign-up bonus, you could get 11 short-haul, round-trip coach flights (13 round-trip flights if you count points earned from minimum spending). That’s huge!
3. Cheap Flights to Hawaii From the West Coast
Another favorite use of British Airways Avios points is for flights on Alaska Airlines and American Airlines from the West Coast to Hawaii.
You’ll pay only 25,000 British Avios points for a round-trip coach ticket (and no fuel surcharges)! You can’t get to Hawaii from the mainland US any more cheaply!
So the sign-up bonus on the Chase British Airways card is enough for a family of 4 to take a Hawaiian vacation if they depart from a West Coast city, like Los Angeles, Seattle or even Anchorage!
4. International Partner Flights With Low Fuel Surcharges
British Airways adds high surcharges to many partner award tickets, but on a few airlines the taxes and fees are minimal.
Award flights on Aer Lingus and Air Berlin from the US East Coast are terrific options to get to Europe.
For example, you’ll pay just 25,000 British Airways Avios points and ~$120 in taxes and fees for a round-trip coach flight between Boston and Dublin on Aer Lingus.
Or 40,000 British Airways Avios points and ~$106 for a round-trip coach flight between New York and Berlin on Air Berlin.
To compare, a low-level round-trip coach ticket on United Airlines between the US and Europe costs 60,000 United Airlines miles.
So using British Airways Avios points on Aer Lingus and Air Berlin to Europe is a terrific deal! Remember, you can often find very cheap paid flights within Europe on discount airlines.
How the Heck Can You Spend $20,000 in 1 Year & Is It Worth It?
I’m working on an upcoming post with ideas. But check out my 40+ ways to meet credit card minimum spending requirements for suggestions to get you started.
Whether or not you’ll be able to comfortably spend the $10,000 required for 75,000 British Airways Avios points or $20,000 for 100,000 British Airways Avios points is something to consider.
Because you could be spending that money to meet minimum spending requirements on OTHER credit cards with great sign-up bonuses.
But if spending the money is not a problem or you value British Airways Avios points highly because they fit with your travel plans, then this is an outstanding deal for you.
Just be sure NOT to go into debt to earn miles and points! Paying interest and fees will negate the travel perks you’d earn.
The sign-up bonus on the Chase British Airways card has been increased to 100,000 British Airways Avios points for a limited time!
But to receive the full bonus, you’ll have to spend $20,000 on purchases in the 1st year of opening your account.
The bonus for this card has never been higher! And it doesn’t come around very often.
You could use 100,000 British Airways Avios points for a LOT of Big Travel, including cheap award flights on partner airlines to Hawaii and Europe.
Where would you go with 100,000 British Airways Avios points?
