What’s the Deal?
Link: My Review of Plastiq
Plastiq lets folks pay bills like tuition, rent, loans, and utilities with a credit card for a flat fee of 2.5% (or 1.99% for new members when they use a MasterCard or American Express card for a limited time).
Now, new users who sign-up for Plastiq and set up 6 or more recurring utility payments will NOT pay any fees when they use their MasterCard for utility bills.
Plastiq defines utilities as (US-based only):
- Waste (Garbage / Sewage)
- Gas or Propane
Paying utility bills with a MasterCard for FREE is a no-brainer!
For example, folks with these MasterCards can earn:
- Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard – 2X Barclays Arrival miles per $1 you spend (worth 2.1% back
when you redeem for $100+ travel purchases)
And this is an excellent way to meet minimum spending requirements without incurring any costs.
Until now, folks have bought PIN-enabled gift cards with a credit card to earn miles and points or meet minimum spending requirements. Then loaded them to prepaid accounts like AMEX Bluebird, REDCard, or Serve to pay utility and other bills.
But gift cards charge fees, usually ~$5 to ~$7 per card.
So this is a much better deal! And you’ll lock-in the 0% rate for as long as you’ve set up recurring payments.
I’ve said before that it’s not usually worth paying a fee earn miles and points unless you need to meet a minimum spending requirement. But Plastiq’s 0% promotion changes that!

How to Make the Most of the Deal
And here are some ways to make a great deal even better!
1. Pre-Pay Utility Bills
If you have a big minimum spending requirement to meet, like the $3,000 in 3 months with the Citi Prestige or Citi ThankYou Premier, consider pre-paying a utility bill. Then setting up the required recurring payments to lock-in the 0% rate.
2. Pay Utilities for Family and Friends
If your loved ones pay their bills with cash, you could offer to pay their utilities with a MasterCard and have them write you a check instead!
It’s easier to earn miles and points when you get your loved ones involved! Just be sure they’ll pay you back!
3. Airbnb Hosts and Rental Property Owners
Are you an Airbnb host? Or do you own rental properties?
You could set up recurring utility payments for all of these to make the most of the 0% rate!
4. Business Owners (Stores, Restaurants)
If you own a business that runs up big utility bills, use your MasterCard to pay them through Plastiq! You could earn hundreds or thousands of miles and points each month.
Let me know if you’ve used Plastiq and what you think of the service!
