Plastiq lets folks pay bills like tuition, rent, loans, and utilities with a credit card for a flat fee of 2.5% (or 1.99% for new members when they use a MasterCard or American Express card for a limited time).

Now, new users who sign-up for Plastiq and set up 6 or more recurring utility payments will NOT pay any fees when they use their MasterCard for utility bills.

Plastiq defines utilities as (US-based only):

  • Water
  • Electric
  • Waste (Garbage / Sewage)
  • Gas or Propane

Paying utility bills with a MasterCard for FREE is a no-brainer!

For example, folks with these MasterCards can earn:

And this is an excellent way to meet minimum spending requirements without incurring any costs.

New Plastiq Users Who Set up 6+ Recurring Payments With a MasterCard Will Pay 0% in Fees for Utility Bills!

Until now, folks have bought PIN-enabled gift cards with a credit card to earn miles and points or meet minimum spending requirements.  Then loaded them to prepaid accounts like AMEX Bluebird, REDCard, or Serve to pay utility and other bills.

But gift cards charge fees, usually ~$5 to ~$7 per card.

So this is a much better deal!  And you’ll lock-in the 0% rate for as long as you’ve set up recurring payments.

I’ve said before that it’s not usually worth paying a fee earn miles and points unless you need to meet a minimum spending requirement.  But Plastiq’s 0% promotion changes that!

  1. Thanks for the info, but they’ll need to come down from “six” to get me interested. Becoming a utility bill payer and collector for friends and family is pretty high on the list of things I’m not going to be doing.

  2. Been hearing / reading pretty bad things about Plastiq. I think I’ll steer clear, plenty of other MS opportunities out there.

  3. Can you change the credit card after you set up the automatic payments and still get 0% as long as it is a master card?

  4. Six different payees? That is not easy. Or is it one payee with 6 re-occurring payments?

  5. Few questions come to mind:

#1. “you’ll lock-in the 0% rate for as long as you’ve set up recurring payments”. Am I reading that correctly that….as long as you have at least 6 recurring payments, you will NEVER increase from the 0%? Sounds implausible to me.

#2. As KBR asked, if you get a different Master card can you switch your payments over to that, and keep your 0%

#3. If you add a new bill-pay and remove another, but still have 6 or more, do you retain your 0%.

#4. You never mention mortgage payments, but on their site they do say you can pay mortgage and county taxes. Can you confirm mortgage payments count towards the 6 bills.

Thank you for all you do,
    Mike

  6. signed up via link but promotion seemingly not working. set recurring utility bill – still showing fees.

  7. oops. set only 5. works now

  8. Payments can take a few weeks to process (not just the first payment), so this renders them completely useless in terms of knowing your bill will be paid on time.

  9. I’m confused. I pay all my utility bills using a points earning credit card already, and to my knowledge, there are no fees associated with doing so (e.g. I use Ink Plus to pay for cable and cell phone). So why is this such a good deal? It would be much better if one could pay rent, mortgage, etc – things that really do incur a fee to pay via credit card (if it’s even possible). If that were possible to do, fee free, for 6 months, I’d jump on it. Also, Dave, what are the negatives associated with using Plastiq?

  10. I dont understand… I can pay utility payments without any fee to Tmobile, AT&T, Dominion Power,, Water and sewer … My Question ? Why should I use plastiq if they offer the same ?

  11. @Above. Did it ever occur to you guys that sometimes you get charged to pay these utility bills? SMH. Just because you can do it for free doesn’t mean others can. My utility company takes $10 fees to make electricity/water bill payments through credit card.

  12. Hi Daraius, Thanks again, very helpful. There are some people out there that are not grateful. If this method does not apply to them, do not complain. It will benefit some others. Thank you Daraius, and keep up the good work ! Raymond

Hi Heavenlyjane, Jess and Russell, pls note that Plastiq payment takes about 7-10 days to process. Some Utilities companies ( the ones that I am using ) do not accept credit card payments without a fee – San Gabriel Water Company, Southern California Edison. Lets all be grateful and thankful for what Daraius has been doing. We can always make our decision. Thanks and have a good summer !

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your comments and feedback! Saw that there were a few questions out there, so wanted to take the chance to answer them. Additionally, if you have any other questions or issues, please email support@plastiq.com or chat us once you log-in to the app.

    1. Can you change the credit card after you set up the automatic payments and still get 0% as long as it is a MasterCard?

Yes, this should recalculate the fee based on the 0% promotion. But you would have to do this now, while the promotion is running.

    2. Six different payees or is it one payee with 6 re-occurring payments?

Great news! Only one payee with 6 recurring payments!

    3. As long as you have at least 6 recurring payments, you will never increase from the 0%?

As long as you set up at least 6 recurring utility payments while the promotion is running, you will receive the 0% MasterCard transaction fee on those payments.

    4. If you add a new bill-pay and remove another, but you still have 6 or more, do you retain your 0%?

As long as the new payee is a utility and you do so while the promotion is running, yes.

    5. Can you confirm mortgage payments count towards the 6 bills?

Mortgage payments are not considered as being under the Utilities category.

    Thanks,
    Rebecca

  14. Excellent post; intriguing offer. Like others, I have questions that are holding me back: (1) is this forever, or just for 6 payments? (2) Just this morning I changed Barclay MC cards, so I don’t have the new number yet. How long is this offer open? So … could all of us have your best answers here, please, and fairly soon???

  15. Hi Daraius,

Could you give us more sample on meeting the minimum 6 payments? It seems a bit challenge for me to come out 6 payments. Other than Gas, Electricity, Water & sewer, Mortgage, Trash, what else can I set up? I’m using another credit card who offer 5% on Cellphone and cable bill so I wouldn’t want to change that to Plastiq. I’m very new to this Plastiq service but is 0% with mastercard set up too good to be true? is there any drawback on this 0% that we are not aware of? Like it only valid for a year and we can’t switch account or switch to another Master Card. Thank you very much and looking forward to your reply.
    J.W.

  16. Rebecca, thank you very much for taking the time to reply to us. That is great customer service!

Few things that weren’t clear (to me at least) in your responses:

#1. “Great news. One payee with 6 recurring payments” Does this mean one cable bill, with 6 months worth of payments? So basically one utility that we set on auto-pay?

#2. If we have the utilities that get us to the 0%, can we add other bills that aren’t utilities at the 0% rate?

#3. “As long as you set up at least 6 recurring utility payments while the promotion is running, you will receive the 0% MasterCard transaction fee on those payments.” This doesn’t answer my question if this 0% will remain in place for as long as you leave those utility payments in place….i.e. multiple years?

    Thanks so much,
    Mike

  17. Hi Rebecca of Plastiq,

Pls help with my new Plastiq account that I just set up through this link :

    1. I just signed up with Plastiq, set up 6 utilities payments ( 3 payees, 2 payment each ), but the fees still show ups and not waived. Your live chat rep has to ask an engineer to find out why and get back to me.

    2. One of the payees, Southern California Edison : I could not put in the Account Name and Account Number.

Your live chat rep has to ask an engineer to find out why and get back to me. My e-mail address is : rlyhk@hotmail.com

    Thanks !

  18. Rebecca from Plastiq,

You stated “As long as you set up at least 6 recurring utility payments while the promotion is running, you will receive the 0% MasterCard transaction fee on those payments.”

How long will the promotion be running for?

  19. Good post! Two questions remain in my mind: For recurring payments will Plastiq adjust the amount automatically to what the monthly bill says? I was asked to set an end date of the recurring bill. I take it that once that is renewed at a later point, there will be fees for using the master card, correct?

  20. Rebecca from Plastiq

    Hi everyone,

Hopefully the below clears things up! As a reminder, for any urgent questions or issues, please reach out to support@plastiq.com or chat us when you log-in to the app.

    1. Is this forever, or just 6 payments.

It is for whatever utility payments you schedule while this promotion is running. So if today, you schedule more than 6 payments, than the fee will apply to all those.

    2. Just this morning I changed Barclay MC cards, so I don’t have the new number yet. How long is this offer open?

This is a limited time offer but end date has not been determined, so recommend setting up those payments as soon as possible!

    3. “Great news. One payee with 6 recurring payments” Does this mean one cable bill, with 6 months worth of payments? So basically one utility that we set on auto-pay?

That is the minimum requirement to have the promotion apply to you. If you have multiple utilities you’d like to pay then you just have to set up 6 recurring payments for each of those utilities.

    4. If we have the utilities that get us to the 0%, can we add other bills that aren’t utilities at the 0% rate?

    Unfortunately, no.

    5. “As long as you set up at least 6 recurring utility payments while the promotion is running, you will receive the 0% MasterCard transaction fee on those payments.” This doesn’t answer my question if this 0% will remain in place for as long as you leave those utility payments in place….i.e. multiple years?

To clarify, this promotion only applies to those recurring utility payments.

Raymond – our live chat rep would know best on how to help; if you haven’t reached out to them yet, would recommend doing so.

    Best,
    Rebecca

  21. Rebecca from Plastiq

    Hi everyone,

Here are some more answers! As a reminder, for any urgent questions or issues, please reach out to support@plastiq.com or chat us when you log-in to the app.

    1. How long will the promotion be running for?

The end date has not been determined yet, so recommend setting up those recurring payments sooner than later!

    2. For recurring payments will Plastiq adjust the amount automatically to what the monthly bill says?

We recommend setting an amount now that is the normal/approximate amount you pay each month, and then the utility company will pass on credit to your account for the next month you overpay and/or will add more to your bill for the next month if you underpay.

    3. I take it that once that is renewed at a later point, there will be fees for using the MasterCard, correct?

If it is after the promotion period, then yes.

    Best,
    Rebecca

  22. So I contacted Plastiq and this was there response about this promo.

    Hello,
Thanks for writing in to Plastiq support about this promotion.
Let me clarify the process for you. When you sign up via the link and schedule a minimum of 6 utility payments, those payments will have the 0% rate. Any future changes/additions will not reflect the promotional rate.
You are welcome to schedule payments for the “life” of your credit card. Payments beyond the expiration date of the card cannot be scheduled and will prevent any payments from processing.
In effect, this is a limited time offer (for the life of your credit card).
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  23. I like this idea, but wanted to ask what encompassed uitilites? Specifically, Alarm service for my home? bug/pest removal service like terminix? monthly lawn service?Hmmmm?

  24. Rebecca from Plastiq

    Hi everyone,

The following are considered as utilities:

    Water
    Electric
    Waste (Garbage / Sewage)
    Gas / Propane

And as always, if you have an urgent issue or question, please email support@plastiq.com or chat us when you login to the app.

    Best,
    Rebecca

  25. Daniel Gutierrez

My Citi card doesn’t get miles if enroll with do i gualify for miles

  26. thank you for this info and special promo.
my utility companies do not accept credit cards … only checks or EFT from checking. So, this will allow me to earn extra miles. Thanks!
However, there is a problem with this system. My utility bill amounts change every month depending on usage, which means that there is more work involved with using Plastiq compared to direct EFT because I will have to login to Plastiq to change the amounts every month.
Rhetorical question … If my utilities total $2400/yr, is it worth the hassle and extra work just to get an extra 2400 airline miles?

  27. Hello,

Is this applicable for Canadian customers too?

I would like to pay for Toronto Hydro-Electric Systems Ltd. and City of Toronto – Tax.

    Thanks!
