Million Mile Secrets reader, Rich writes:

I want to transfer my Citi ThankYou points to Hilton.  But is it better to transfer my Citi ThankYou points to Virgin Atlantic 1st, because Virgin Atlantic miles transfer to Hilton at a 2:3 ratio?

Will I get more Hilton points this way?

So will Rich earn more Hilton points by transferring his Citi ThankYou points to Virgin Atlantic first?
Should You Transfer Your Citi ThankYou Points To Virgin Atlantic And Then Hilton

Rich Can Transfer His Citi ThankYou Points to Hilton for Stays at Places Like the Idyllic Hilton Grand Wailea. But Will He Get More Points by Transferring to Virgin Atlantic First?

It’s better to transfer Citi ThankYou points directly to Hilton.  I’ll show you why!

How Can You Use Citi ThankYou Points?

The Citi ThankYou points you earn with cards like the Citi Prestige and the Citi ThankYou Premier can be used to book flights, cruises, hotels, and rental cars through the Citi Travel Center at a rate of:

  • 1.6 cents per point (if you have the Citi Prestige card) when redeemed for American Airlines paid flights
  • 1.33 cents per point (if you have the Citi Prestige card) when redeemed for travel on other airlines
  • 1.25 cents per point (if you have the Citi ThankYou Premier card) when redeemed for airfare, hotels, car rentals, and cruises

But you’ll get more value from your Citi ThankYou points by transferring to airlines and hotel partners like:

Rich wants to use his Citi ThankYou points for stays at Hilton hotels.  And some folks like to transfer their Virgin Atlantic miles to Hilton because you’ll get 1.5 Hilton points for every 1 Virgin Atlantic mile.

But Rich will NOT benefit from going this route.  That’s because you can transfer Citi ThankYou points directly to Hilton at the same rate!

If Rich transfers the entire 50,000 Citi ThankYou points he can earn after completing the minimum spending on the Citi Presitge or Citi ThankYou Premier cards, he’ll get 75,000 Hilton points!

Hilton hotels include ConradDoubleTreeEmbassy SuitesHampton InnHiltonHilton Garden InnHome2SuitesHomewood Suites, and Waldorf Astoria brand hotels.

So Rich could use his 75,000 Hilton points to stay 20 nights at Category 1 Hilton hotels or 10 nights at Category 2 Hilton hotels.

Bottom Line

You’ll often get more out of your Citi ThankYou points by transferring them to airline and hotel partners.  And if you want to use your points for stays at Hilton hotels, you’re better off transferring them directly to Hilton instead of going through Virgin Atlantic.

That’s because you’ll get the same ratio of 1.5 Hilton points for each Citi ThankYou point you transfer.  Plus, you’ll save yourself quite a bit of time!

  1. He will benefit if he does it now because there is a transfer bonus of 25% when you transfer from Citi to Virgin Atlantic. So, his 50000 TY points will become 93750 Hilton points if he does it via Virgin Atlantic by Aug 23.

  2. my father, mother and son each have 53,000 thank you points from the recent CC citi promotion. Can I transfer all those points to myself and then transfer to an airline partner
    Thanks

  4. For the next week, you get a 25% bonus transferring from Thank You to Virgin Atlantic so you’d get 1.875 HHonors points using this scheme.

  5. I actually transferred my points from Thank You to Virgin Atlantic due to 25% bonus and the fact I needed to top off my Flying Club miles. Minimum of 10k miles (with increments of 5k miles) are required to exchange for Hilton HHonors points.

  6. If contemplating transferring Citi TYP to Hilton, the following is the best path unless you’re topping off you’re account to get the 5th night free or have come upon a redemption where you’re getting ~$0.006/pt or more in value. Go to thankyou.com. Under the “Shop” menu, click on Points Transfer. Ignore the Hilton and VA transfer buttons. Click on the “Shop” menu again and click on “Hotels”. Book your Hilton hotel through the Thank You portal and use your Thank You points. Done.

  7. Ugh. At least do the reseArch on why eu h is asking. To dismiss the virgin route shows you haven’t done the research on the 25% bonus. This is the worst article.

  8. If you have a travel planned, it’ll also be good to check the cash price and see if booking directly using ThankYou points makes sense.
E,g,, I was looking at Hampton Inn Panama City FL for the labor day weekend. HHonors cost is 60K points. I booked the same using 26K TY poinits ($325 cash value).
    But of course YMMV.

  9. How many miles do we get, when we transfer 50000 Citi Thank You points to Asia Miles ?
