Update: Beginning February 2, 2016, British Airways will no longer offer 1-way, short-haul (under 650 miles) coach award tickets on partner airlines in North America for 4,500 British Airways Avios points. Instead these flights will cost 7,500 British Airways Avios points.
What’s going on with the British Airways Avios program?
According to the British Airways’ US website, the award flight calculator is offline and might not return until 2016.
But the UK version of the award flight calculator still works.
It’s NOT possible to check how many British Airways Avios points you’ll need for an award flight on the US version of the British Airways website.
But the UK website still shows (for now) current award prices.
For example, New York to Boston is under 650 miles, so British Airways should charge 4,500 British Airways Avios points for 1-way coach ticket on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines.
Wandering Aramean’s award search engine gave the current price of 4,500 British Airways Avios points.
So nothing’s different for now. But I wonder if this is a sign of changes to come?
I find it odd that it would take ~4 months to update an online tool that seemed to be working pretty well! That said, the UK site shows the same award points prices, so let’s hope it’s only a software glitch.
What Does It Mean?
I don’t know of any upcoming changes to the British Airways Avios program right now.
But it looks like British Airways might be changing their award prices in 2016, and got an early start on their US website.
They could also be simply updating their award flight calculator and NOT making any changes to prices. So I wouldn’t rush to book award tickets using British Airways Avios points just yet.
British Airways changed their loyalty program in April 2015. So if more changes are on the way, this would be the 2nd time in a year.
And starting October 1, 2015, you’ll get fewer British Airways Avios points when you transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points.
More updates could be very bad for the program!

I don’t know the whole story yet, but I’ll keep you updated as soon as I find out new information!
The British Airways award flight calculator on the US website is NOT available.
But the same tool on the UK website still works, and estimates the most current award prices.
I don’t know what this means for British Airways and the Avios program yet (if anything!). British Airways could be making more changes to the program or improving the award flight calculator.
As of right now, award prices have NOT changed. I’m keeping an eye on this and will let you know what happens!
